The Basics
R.E.S.P.E.C.T Okay, so I know it’s a bit cliché, but to me it’s one of the most important rules of any board. Everybody is to treat everybody else with respect. It’s just like we were taught in kindergarten. I don’t care if you want to kill the person in cold blood, while on Invalid, everybody will be treated with respect, whether member, moderator, or administrator. Flaming will result in an immediate ban. I take this rule very seriously, so be warned.
Use First and Last Names When registering a character for the board, please use a first and last name. This name should be the name of your character. Names like sweetiepie007 will be deleted. If you would like your name changed, please contact an admin. It’s what we’re here for.
Be Literate Invalid is a literate board, meaning that we will not be accepting anything less on this board. Posts should be detailed and moderately lengthy. This doesn’t mean that we demand four paragraphs describing somebody’s nostrils, but it people like quality posts with a bit of length to them, so as a guideline, posts should be around 3-4 paragraphs in length at a minimum. If you cannot keep to this posting length, then please don’t join.
R-Rating I’m leaving the board rating rather open, the reason being that having a strict board rating tends to limit the content that people can put in their posts. I know that we are all rational beings, so I assume that we can all exercise some sense of better judgment when making a post. I don’t mind if you swear, heck, I watch Quentin Tarantino movies so I’m no stranger to profanity, but swearing just for the sake of swearing is not allowed. I know we all have more than four words in our vocabulary, so I would like to see everybody using those other words as well. Violence is permissible as well, but again, please keep it reasonable. If you’re going to get into a physical fight, you are not allowed to powerplay. Romance, okay, but please don’t go into huge amounts of detail. Sometimes less truly is more on this topic. If your thread is turning out to be more mature than you thought, please put some sort of warning in the title so people don’t mistakenly wander across something they didn’t want to read. Being R rated doesn't mean we're allowing people to do whatever they want in every little detail, and if we see people abusing this rating then we'll drop it right down.
Registration and Character Information
Canon Characters If you wish to play a canon character, you must be active. It annoys me to no end when somebody registers as an important canon only to drop off the face of the board in a couple of days. If you leave for an extended period of time without informing one of the Admins, your character will be deleted and put back up for grabs. Activity is important, and a site cannot remain active unless its members stick with their characters.
Incomplete Profiles In the Character Registration forum, there is a special subforum where unfinished applications can be posted. We ask that you post all incomplete apps here for the sheer sake of our sanity. It’s annoying to search through a bunch of profiles only to find that half of them are not completed. When you’ve finished with your profile, please bump it with the words ‘finished’, ‘completed’ or something along those lines.
Reservations How many times have you seen a canon that you really wanted to play only to find that the name has already been registered? Bummer, I know. But no need to fear, super rule is here! At Invalid, we ask that you do not register a character name without the 110% intention of playing that character. Registering a name does not mean that you automatically get that character. The ultimate list is the canon list. It’s updated frequently, so check it out to see which characters are really available. You can reserve a character for up to three days, after which they will go back up for grabs. More than one person can post an application for a character that is up for grabs. The deciding factor if this happens will be the quality of the profile.
Mary Sue and Gary Stu The bane of everyone’s existence, the perfect character. Let’s try to be practical, here. Nobody is beautiful and intelligent and a great artist and has a great singing voice and is a wonderful athlete and has everybody falling at their heels. To shorten that little rant, nobody is perfect. We will not be accepting any Mary Sue type characters because they do not contribute anything to the board. I know that a major theme in this board is genetic, but all characters must have flaws; it would be unnatural if they didn't. If your profile does not have flaws, you will be asked nicely once to add some. After that, your application will be denied.
Character Variety I know that everybody is going to want to be an astronaut, but let’s please try to keep some balance within the characters. While everybody would love to play these more glamorous types of characters; all characters are very important to the forum. If we see that there are getting to be too many of one type of character, the Admins will not accept any more applications of that type until there is some balance among the characters again.
Multiple Characters You can play multiple characters, but we ask that you please keep all of them active. It can be difficult to rp three characters, and if you don’t think you can handle it, then please keep it to a more manageable number. If you ever grow tired of playing a character and want to drop them, just tell an admin and we can delete them for you or find somebody else who would like to play them.
Roleplaying and Posting
Third Person Past Tense All posts are to be made in the third person past tense. Full sentences are required and the use of symbols to indicate action are outlawed on pain of death. Bad Post Example: *Susan walks down the hall and hits her head on an open locker* “Ouch!” *She yells* This is a bad sample post because it is written in the present tense and uses symbols to indicate action. Bad Post Example” I walk down the hall and hit my head on an open locker. “Ouch!” I yell. This is a bad sample post because it is written in the first person. Good Post Example: Susan walked down the school hallway, not paying attention to what was going on around her. While her mind was somewhere else, she walked into an open locker, hitting her head on the door. “Ouch!” she exclaimed, rubbing her head. This is a good example because it is written in the third person past tense and it is descriptive.
Drama Drama Drama Everybody loves drama, but there is a such thing as too much drama. I’m not outlawing it, but I am asking that it is kept to a reasonable level. I don’t want to see every character on the board sleeping around or killing people. On that note, not all female characters are sluts. Reading the rules just for the sake of finding a secret phrase is wrong. You should take the time to read the rules through fully becuse it alleviates a lot of pain and suffering down the line. Post this in your application to prove that you've answered the question. Despite common misconceptions, Gattaca is not the red light district.
Godmodding Absolutely forbidden upon pain of torture and death. I don’t care what the circumstances are, you cannot determine what happens to another person’s character. If you throw a punch at somebody, they have to decide if you hit them or not and how badly they are hit. If I see anybody godmodding, you will be banned. This is your warning.
Tags The lovely tagging system, something that we all need to be familiar with. As a subtitle to a thread, sometimes there is a thread, indicating that it is for a specific person or group of people. If you are not one of the people specified, do not respond. If a thread does not have a tag or is tagged open, then anybody can reply.
Spamity Spam Yes, the disgusting meat that was immortalized in a Monty Python song. While the meat spam is gross, so is spam on the board. There is an out of character section for you to spam your little heart out. Just make sure you put it in the appropriate forum. If you need to make an out of character comment in one of your posts, please use some sort of enclosing symbol to indicate that you’re speaking out of character. Some examples are: ((text)) [[text]] {{text}} >>text<<. Well, you get the point. Just please try to keep this to a minimum.
Advertising
Fair’s Fair If you advertise on Invalid, there must be a spot where we are able to advertise on your board. It’s only fair. If there is not, your advertisement will be deleted.
Post in the Advertising Forum That’s what it’s there for. It’s guest friendly, so anybody can put their advertisements there, but that is the only place that they are allowed. Do not advertise anywhere else, including the C-Box. If we see you advertising anywhere but the advertising forum, your posts will be deleted and your ip will be banned.
The Most Important Rule
FUN! Again, I now that it’s cliché, but that’s the whole reason somebody joins a site, right? I know I probably came off sounding like the world’s biggest bitch, but I consider myself to be firm and fair. Enjoy yourself, have fun, and if you ever need anything, feel free to contact either myself or one of the other Admins. I promise, we’re not really that mean.
Thank you,
The Admins
