Here we have a comprehensive listing of races and creatures we see in the world of the Mortal Instruments Trilogy. The majority of the information is credited to MundieSource.net and we've also added information we've picked up in the process of rereading the books. We're just trying to have all of the canon information as accessible as possible so that our roleplaying can be accurate and Cassandra Clare's world is intact. If we are missing anything, or if there is something worth adding that you think belongs here, please let us know! **Information compiled is a combination of text taken from MundieSource and our additions.

.:Demons:. Demons are the soulless beings that live in multiple dimensions. They escape into the human dimension, seeking human life and vitality to feed on. They are the reason Shadowhunters exist, and are responsible, in one way or another, for the rise of the Dwonworlder races. Factoid: Gold is poisonous to demons.
Featured Demons
Agramon // The Greater Demon that kills the warlock in the prologue of City of Ashes and later assists Valentine in killing the other Downworlder children. It is the demon of fear and takes the form of whatever you are most afraid of in order to drive you mad.
Abbadon // Describes itself as “The Demon of the Abyss.” It is the Greater Demon that attacks from Madame Dorothea's trying to get the Mortal Cup. It is killed, in part, by Simon because it cannot be exposed to sunlight and Simon shoots out the skylight.
Eidolon // The boy with blue hair, a shape-shifter demon Clary sees in Pandemonium. We are never told exactly what kind of demon he is, but we know that he has several rows of teeth, as mentioned when he grinds his teeth, and that his hands are claw-like when he fights Jace.
Dragons // Usually described as large, scaly, and possessing the ability to breathe fire. Jace says that they're mostly extinct in a conversation with Simon in CoB.
Forsaken // A mundane who has been Marked but survived the pain and lost his or her mind, thus becoming a deformed and evil monster. Valentine has an army of Forsaken in CoB. The existence of Forsaken is against the Covenant.
Ravener // A demon that has a body like an overly-scaly alligator, many legs, and a thick barbed tail. Ravener's can speak and, from our experiences with them, generally do so in broken sentences. They are generally search-and-destroy creatures under the control of powerful warlocks or demons.

.:Nephilim:. General Information
They are also known as Shadowhunters and are sometimes referred to as “Children of Nephilim.” Nephilim is a Biblical term and according to this article, are the result of relationships between “Sons of God,” or fallen angels, and “Daughters of Man.” They are also sometimes referred to as giants in Biblical texts. According to the official TMI website, the Angel Raziel created Nephilim after being summoned by a warlock. He did so by mixing his blood with the blood of man when the world was overrun with demons.
A Shadowhunter's existance revolves around the task of ridding demons from the dimension they share with Mundanes and Downworlders. They begin a very extensive education when they are young, learning about demon nature, fighting, weaponry, ancient languages, and runes. The goal of their education is to prepare them for a lifetime of protecting the world from demons, sending them back to hell.
As adults, they have several options as a shadowhunter. They can relocate from their home, Idris, and run an Institute at another location in the mundane world. From there, they can defend a different front of the demon presence, and offer traveling Nephilim boarding. In general terms, Shadowhunters who live outside of Idris and in institutes have more contact with Downworlders and are more comfortable with them, though still suspicious.
For the more talented and mentally strong Shadowhunters, they can elect to become a Silent Brother. These mute Nephilim are the recordkeepers of the Shadowhunter history, and incredibly pure to the laws of the Clave. They withstand the more powerful runes from the Gray Book, from which they draw their power and authority. Valentine Morgenstern recently murdered this whole subpopulation of Nephilim, and the Clave must now seek new volunteers.
Weapons and Enhanced Abilities
A Shadowhunter's primary weapon is his or her stele. With it, they can inscribe the runes taught to them from the Gray Book that give them enhanced abilities that range from stealth, dexterity and the ability to heal. Without runes, Nephilim are as vulnerable as mundanes. They are then trained to handle seraph blades and multiple types of weapons to kill demons and send them back to hell.

.:Warlocks:. General Information
Also know as the Lilith's Children. Warlocks are half-human and half-demon. They have magic powers with no actual source, though their powers can be depleted, as seen in CoA when Magnus helps keep the truck afloat.
Email communication between CC herself and Loki from the forums at TheMundanes.com:
| QUOTE | Warlocks in the MI world are the offspring of a demon and a human being, so they're born.* They can't have children, and they don't really have specific personality traits because unlike faeries they don't live in a close knit society but are rather scattered. They tend to age until they decide what age they want to stop at, but since they have different kinds of demon parents it can vary."
*I asked if someone could be "sired" into being a warlock, like a vampire or werewolf. Turns out not so. |
