Where exactly did you take you Nephilim boyfriend on your first official date? It was a question that Magnus had been pondering occasionally since first meeting Alec, he’d been worrying about it more since Alec had kissed him in the Hall of Accords before they went into a battle no one was sure they’d come out of. That was his problem after a relationship introduction like he and Alec had had, not were seemed like it could ever have the same pizzazz. There was also the fact that even though Magnus adored Alec, he wasn’t sure anywhere would live up to the Shadowhunter’s impossible standards. Standards Magnus knew he was probably going to be set to, can’t teach an old dog new tricks would be his answer.
Since returning to New York from Alicante Magnus had searched everywhere. It the new treaty in place he knew it was time to explore and he’d hoped it would give them a more unique place for a first date. A fairy picnic in central park, drinks at a werewolf’s bar, a bike ride through the night on a Vampire cycle. After assessing all the ideas that came to him Magnus set them all aside and started thinking again.
He wanted to impress Alec and for once as a man not as a warlock. Finally he decided he’d discuss it with Alec and hoped he’d think the same that it didn’t really matter what they did as long as they were together and had fun.
It was only just after lunch when Magnus set about getting ready, early he knew but he wanted to be dressed you right and his hair just so. After all he knew he’d probably have to see Mr. and Mrs. Lightwood before leaving with their son.
Washed and freshly cropped he styled his hair almost tradition apart from the blue streaks and tips he interjected with a flick of his wrist. Black leather pants teamed with biker boots and their shiny silver buckles, hugged tight to his still slim frame. A blue silk shirt with silver stars hung half open from his shoulders, a bright orange vest underneath. Topping the whole look off Magnus slipped on a biker jacket and declared himself ready to go.
It was a little after sunset when he left his apartment and made his way to the Institute. Nerves thumped heavy in his chest when he finally turned up at the abandoned and derelict church a glamour he didn’t even see. Magnus saw the tall towers of the majestic building, a beacon for Nephilim in New York.
Climbing the steps Magnus knocked hard on the door knowing he couldn’t enter due to the wards protecting the Institute from Downworlders. Even with the peace between the two races it was still a necessary precaution, the few often spoilt it for the many. Stepping back Magnus smoothed his shirt, hitched up his pants and licked his teeth feeling for any remnants of the lunch he’d eaten that was left over dinner.
Sweaty palms, a racing heart beat and butterflies; Magnus felt like a teenager on a first date not the aged High Warlock he was. If anyone ask he’d deny it, but he was nervous. Alec meant a lot to him, if not everything, and he’d had longer to realize his orientation and feelings. He was falling for the dark haired Nephilim, really falling.

Alec had been through a lot lately. Admitting to his parents that he was in love, gay, and in love with a warlock. Openly admitting to himself the feelings he shared for Magnus. Mourning the death of his brother and returning to New York City from Alicante. And now, he was preparing for his first real date with Magnus. They had a relationship for awhile now in secret, but never really went out on a date, something he knew was his own fault, for not being comfortable with the situation. He was just starting to accept what he was, and realize that it wasn’t wrong for him to be happy with Magnus Bane. Magnus made him happy so why shouldn’t he date him.
Alec was nervous as he stood in his room in the institute in front of the mirror. He didn’t know what to act on a date with a warlock. He felt an overwhelming need for Magnus to like him. He cared about the warlock more than he had ever wanted to admit before, and part of him was afraid that now that he was no longer playing hard to get, Magnus may lose interest in him quickly.
Alec stood in front of the mirror and sighed as he looked at what he was wearing. He had bought new clothes for the date. It was uncharacteristic of him. Normally he would have just worn an oversized sweater that probably had a couple holes in it and not cared much about his appearance, but Magnus was always dressed so nicely. He wanted to impress him, or at least not have the other man be embarrassed to be seen with him. But as Alec looked in the mirror he wondered if this was the right look.
Alec had decided to go simple, sticking to the darker colors that he did best. He had a pair of black dress pants on and a dark grey button up the front dress shirt that was tucked in neatly. Alec sighed shaking his head feeling like he had no sense of fashion and sure that Magnus would agree the second he saw him. Maybe he should have just worn his shadowhunter gear. At least he knew that fit him and Magnus wasn’t repulsed by the site of him in it.
Before Alec had a chance to think about if he should change he heard the knock on the door. His heart fluttered and he felt the nervousness sink into a pit in his stomach, wondering how he’d get through the date without messing up. But at the same time he found himself smiling, feeling relieved that he didn’t have to hide who he was seeing, that he could openly go on a date with Magnus.
Alec hurried down the hallway towards the door, knowing he’d have to meet Magnus outside since he wasn’t allowed in the institute, something that Alec felt guilty about. He hated that he was able to go to Magnus’ home but he wasn’t allowed to invite him inside to show him his home. He wondered if Clary could ever create a rune to change that, even temporarily.
Alec took a deep breath before opening up the door and nervously giving the man he loved a smile. “Hi..” He said awkwardly, not sure how this was supposed to go. He looked down seeing what Magnus was wearing. He was stunning and much more fashionable than Alec (as expected). “You look great…”

Magnus’ heart was in his mouth when Alec opened the door, he looked amazing. The warlock was always one for colors, but Alec looked amazing in dark colors. His hair looked darker and his eyes deeper. It wasn’t lost on him that Alec had bought new clothes, these ones weren’t holed or faded. Not that Magnus would have minded if Alec had come out in his oldest clothes, he wanted him not the clothes he was in.
Alec seemed awkward as he said hi and Magnus worried he’d changed his mind. What if not it was out in the open he’d decided her didn’t want a warlock boyfriend who dressed like a color card. His compliment changed that.
“Thanks.” Magnus said nipping the corner of his lip. “You look pretty great yourself.” Magnus told him looking him up and down and taking in every bit of him.
“So ready to go?” He asked knowing he didn’t know where they were going to go, neither did he want to stand on the steps of an abandoned church as the Mundies would see it. “I was thinking we could just see where the night takes us.” Magnus said casually, but wanting to explain he had wracked his brain trying to think of the perfect place for them to go.

Alec couldn’t take his eyes off of Magnus as awkward as he felt looking him directly in the eyes. The warlock could wear clothes like no other. He could be a model for any high fashion designer if he wanted. Alec knew that he didn’t compare at all in the looks department, and really his personality was no prize either (as many people had pointed out to him over the years). He wondered what Magnus saw in him, or if it was just the thrill of the chase of the closet cased nephilim. His stomach twisted itself in knots hoping that Magnus still saw something in him. He couldn’t bear the thought that after working so hard to be out in the open like this, that he’d lose the relationship he had been fighting for.
Alec smiled lightly as Magnus told him he looked pretty great himself. He was sure the high warlock was just being polite, but appreciated the compliment none the less. “Thanks” He replied.
Alec nodded as he asked if he was ready to go, closing the institute door behind him and taking a few steps down joining Magnus as they walked away from the doorway. He listened to him say how he was just going to see where the night took them. He nodded, wondering if the reason they had no destination was because Magnus hadn’t cared enough to plan anything out. Maybe he had regretting making the date and now figured they’d just walk around til one of them got bored. He felt a little disappointed but was happy that at least Magnus had shown up. Being stood up on his first real date would have been unbearable. “Sure, that’s fine” He said agreeing to the carefree plans.

No matter how many times Magnus saw Alec he wasn’t sure the shadowhunter would ever stop taking his breath away. In all his three hundred years he had never met anyone who had this effect on him, made him feel this consumed by their presence and the mere thought of them. During the battle Magnus had felt divided, half his mind on the battle and the other half worrying about Alec. After that kiss they’d shared in the Hall Magnus knew he couldn’t bare to ever lose him.
Pretty good, that was an understatement and Magnus knew it. Alec looked amazing, even if he didn’t favor the bright colors he himself did the Nephilim still looked fantastic. Feeling lacking with his compliment Magnus thrust him hands into his pocket. “You look great, Alec.” Magnus said looking him up and down again and letting his eyes rest on the other mans deeper eyes. “But you always do, especially battle gear” Magnus complimented with a suggestive wink.
Fine wasn’t what he wanted for their first date. Magnus felt like he was messing up on everything. “See I tried to figure out something to do, something exciting; a picnic, drinks or bike ride, but everything seemed a little cliché. I want something perfect for our date.” Magnus prattled on as Alec walked with him towards the main side walk. “Sorry, I should have planned something out. Guess I can’t be perfect every time.” Magnus shrugged apologizing and hopping Alec realized he was sincere.

Alec’s smile got less nervous and more confident as Magnus repeated his compliment and told him that he looked great. Alec didn’t think his looks were the best. He was no Jace that was for sure. But hearing Magnus’ compliment made him feel more confident. He gave a light grin as Magnus mentioned the battle gear, thinking about his consideration a few moments earlier in front of the mirror. “I actually considered wearing that tonight…but figured this was a more casual occasion”
Alec wondered for a moment if Magnus would have preferred the shadowhunter leathers. He didn’t want to look like he didn’t care anymore than if he was just going out demon hunting, or worse yet look so formal because he was going out with a downworlder that he had to be on his guard. But he already knew Magnus liked them, maybe it would have been the safer choice for the evening. But then Alec remembered Magnus had told him he looked great. He approved of his choice for the evening, despite how silly Alec may have felt when he went shopping for the outfit.
Alec looked over as Magnus went on to explain that he had in fact tried to plan out an evening, but the reason that he hadn’t come up with anything wasn’t because he didn’t care enough to try, but rather because nothing seemed good enough. Alec smiled lightly, thinking it was sweet that Magnus felt that way. That he could make a 300 year old warlock want to make things perfect for them. “Oh” He said realizing everything he had previously thought was wrong. He shook his head as Magnus apologized. “Its okay…and you are perfect” Alec risked saying, reaching down and taking Magnus’ hand.

As Alec’s smile grew Magnus felt his own grow to, he wanted to make Alec happy and would do anything to do that. “Maybe you can wear it for me another time?” Magnus said becoming more like his usual smart witted self. The idea of Alec in his battle leathers was certainly a nice image, and something he wouldn’t mind seeing again especially if Alec wasn’t about to run off into a real battle; Magnus didn’t want to be patching him up again anytime soon. “Alone?” He joked, but actually meaning it.
Magnus care about clothes and fashion, but he didn’t care for the people who judged others by them; it was something he would never do. And he’s certainly never judge Alec for anything. Alec had already proved himself to Magnus and that was all he needed, the shadowhunter could wear a rubber ducky suit and Magnus would still have been excited to be seen with him.
Magnus prattled on trying to explain without Alec thinking he’d not bothered, in fact bothering too much and caring too much was what had left them with no destination now. Alec seemed happy with his words and that left Magnus relieved, when he shook his head Magnus blew air out of his teeth and smiled. “Well that makes two of us.” He said as he nodded. The feeling of Alec’s hand slipping into his warmed his whole body, like the sun must warm that Mundie vampire he was associates with. The warlock squeeze Alec’s hand and smiled at him.
“What about a movie?” He suggested now just happy to keep the contact and not caring where they went so long as Alec didn’t pull his hand back. A Movie theater seemed perfect, Magnus hoped it would keep Alec at ease not knowing if he was yet completely comfortable with their relationship.

Alec smirked as Magnus suggested he wear his shadowhunter gear for him another time. “You stick around long enough, I’m sure you’ll get to see it again” He said, hoping that they would have a chance that Alec could wear it for him. He gave a light laugh as Magnus added the alone part. “You’re into the weird stuff, you mean having an audience isn’t one of them?”
Alec looked over watching Magnus smile, and seem relieved after having explained to Alec about the reasoning for not having anything planned for the evening. Alec began to wonder if maybe he should have made the plans. Magnus had come to pick him up, but maybe he should have contributed the idea of what to do to the date.
Alec felt nervous as he took Magnus’ hand. It wasn’t a gesture that he frequently did in public, but neither was the kiss that he had given him amongst the other shadowhunters. Maybe some of Magnus’ courage was rubbing off on him. The squeeze that Magnus gave Alec’s hand reassured him that things were going well and that the move to take his hand was acceptable.
“Sure a movie sounds nice” Alec said with a smile liking the idea. “Movie is a good date idea” He said, also liking the idea that this was actually a date and not just sneaking around when no one else knew.

“I’ll be sticking around, don’t you worry.” Magnus said with a smile at the idea of seeing Alec again, not just in shadowhunter gear. He wanted to stay around and see Alec again and more often. Magnus let forth a loud laughter as Alec commented on him been into weird stuff. “Weird stuff how? I’m not from a race of people who run around in leather and enjoy causing each other pain with pointy sticks.” Magnus joked about the Nephilim hoping he hadn’t offended Alec. “As for an audience it all depends on the partner.” He winked feeling more at ease.
Relief washed over Magnus when Alec didn’t instantly walk away when he admitted her didn’t really have anything planned. He felt terrible and ill prepared, but at least he’d been honest.
Magnus hoped that the squeeze of Alec’s hand didn’t make him want to pull away. He liked the feel of the other man’s hand in his and he didn’t want to let go just yet. Would he still hold it when they were out in public Mundie or otherwise? Magnus hoped so, this was a date and holding hands was a date thing, right?
A movie sounded nice, was nice good enough? “We could go for dinner and drinks?” Magnus suggested not even sure if Alec drank, or what he ate. Magnus realized he didn’t know much about Alec other then some scars and past, recent, injuries. “You know maybe we should grab dinner first. I’m starving.” Magnus admitted suddenly realizing that other then coffee he’d skipped everything else. And dinner would give them a chance to talk and get to know each other something Magnus really wanted to do.

Alec couldn’t help but smile as Magnus assured him that he’d be sticking around. He felt such a bond with the warlock, one that had only intensified for him after having admitted to his family he loved him, and the two had partnered up in the battle, marking each other.
Alec started laughing as Magnus spoke about Shadowhunters in a way that did make them sound a little strange. “Okay, well if you put it that way…but I bet if I checked your closet I’d find some leather there too” He said, sure that Magnus’ version of a leather outfit would differ greatly from his shadowhunter gear.
As they walked away from the door of the institute Alec found himself looking down at their hands. He had surprised himself by being the one to make the move and take Magnus’ hand, but it was exactly what he wanted and it felt great. He looked back up, not wanting to seem like he was staring or for Magnus to think he had regretted his action.
Alec listened as Magnus suggested that they get dinner first and told him he was starving. “Yeah dinner sounds good” He said, thinking it would be nice for them to have a chance to talk the movie, but he just hoped that he wouldn’t end up creating an awkward silence between them. “Afterwards we can see what we feel like doing, drinks or a movie…anything”

The smile Alec wore was infectious and Magnus found himself grinning. Smiling was something he did a lot since he and Alec had gone public in the Hall of the Accords in Alec home city of Alicante. Wow, what a hell of a kiss it still gave Magnus chills. And going into battle with him had been the scariest thing.
“Anytime you want to share clothes in my wardrobe, feel free. There’s some stuff in there I’d love to see one you.” Magnus winked. The idea of Alec in more then just his leather shadowhunter gear made Magnus smile; though he wasn’t sure Alec would go for the rainbow pants. “Not sure I’ll be trying out your shadowhunter gear though.” He said with a laugh not wanting to be mistaken for mocking the Nephilim.
Alec’s hand in his felt right, it felt like a long time coming but something he was now glad to have. Alec was what he wanted, what he’d wanted before he knew he wanted someone. Magnus squeeze it once more wanting to reassure Alec he was comfortable with it. He hoped Alec was comfortable with it and didn’t regret it now. “You ok with this?” He asked casually, “I’m great with it, but if you’re not I understand.
Anything was filled with possibilities, so was the night ahead. “Drinks, yea. I know this great bar over in Harlem; Wolf’s Bane…” Magnus realized quickly that that was a Downworlders bar and Alec may not want to go there. “Erm, I know others.” He nodded, quickly. Even with the treaty signed Magnus knew some people may not be happy with the association, Alec may not be comfortable either. “We’ll see .” He laughed lightly.

Alec found himself laughing once again while he was with the warlock. He brought out such a lighter side to Alec, one that was happier. He felt comfortable being in his own skin for the first time in awhile. The idea of Magnus in shadowhunter gear was oddly exciting to Alec. He had always thought Jace looked great in it, but to see his boyfriend dressed that way he was sure would be a turn on, even if it was just in private for him.
“If you get me to wear anything from your closet I think its only fair I get to see what you’d look like in shadowhunter gear. I think you’d look cute” He said with a smirk. “ But we may want to restrict these fashion shows for behind closed doors.” He added knowing that he’d never be comfortable enough to wear some of the clothes Magnus owned in public and having the warlock dressed as a shadowhunter could cause problems with less openminded people of his kind.
Alec appreciated it when Magnus checked with him to see if he was okay with holding hands like they were. He knew that things had been rough for them before, when Alec had denied there was anything going on between them. It had caused tension between them. But despite that, he could see how understanding Magnus was about his feelings, knowing this was all still new for him. He nodded and gave him a smile. “Yeah, for now at least” He said, not knowing honestly how he’d feel on more crowded streets. “I like it”
Alec nodded as Magnus suggested a bar but then told him he knew others. He knew why he made the suggested and hated that their relationship was frowned upon from so many different aspects that they had to be so careful about where they went. “We can see what we find” He said trying to be open minded to any bar that Magnus would suggest downworlders bar or otherwise.

Magnus liked to hear Alec laugh; it was an unusual sound coming form the Shadowhunter who he was more used to seeing pouting. The laughter may have been at the joke of him in Shadowhunter gear, but he felt it suited Alec. Magnus felt the tension and nervousness he’d had about the date melt away as they seemed to easily flow with conversation and familiarity.
“Cute is not what I’d be going for. I was thinking more deathly and scary and damn handsome while wearing it.” Magnus laughed striking muscle flexing poses with his free hand and gesturing to his body as he mention handsome. The descriptions he used to describe what he hoped to look like in the gear was exactly how he though Alec looked in his fighting garb. Magnus had never been more attracted to Alec as he was when they walked into battle together; it was his fearless strength and courage that really pulled Magnus in. The tight leather only added to it. “Behind closed door might be best. Once every sees you in the rainbow pants I might have competition.” He joked and smiled.
Magnus knew Alec was still not as comfortable with his sexuality as he was and he understood his feelings of nervousness. Been gay wasn’t the ultimate issue, it was more their species and status; the Treaty may have been signed but it was far from been accepted by all. “You know it only matter what we think and feel, but I know it’ll be hard with everyone else having a view on us.” Magnus said wanting to support his boyfriend no matter how long it too him to be comfortable. “And just for the record, I really like it.” He smiled.
“Well if all else fails we can head back to my place and have a few drinks there. I promise not to serve the blue drinks.” He winked thinking he would be perfectly happy with any alone time he got with Alec. Though he understood that might be a little much too fast for Alec and their relationship. “Lets just see where the nights takes us, knowing the people you hang out with we might end up pulled in to a battle for the last unicorn or dragon. Or fighting Darth Vader.” He laughed meaning no insult, just having a joke. He squeezed Alec’s hand and smiled.

Alec shook his head with another chuckle as Magnus voiced how he wanted to be seen as deathly, scary and handsome while he was wearing the gear, even flexing his muscles for him a bit. Alec wondered if that was how Magnus saw him when he wore it. "As much as I know you're capable of quite a lot, I think I've seen you in glitter too many times to see you as scary, no matter what you wear" He told him, knowing that Magnus did have the power to be devastating if he should choose, but still feeling completely at ease around him, not feeling like he had to watch his back with Magnus anymore than he did around Jace or Izzy. "But the handsome part, you know you have that in anything you wear" He said, feeling the nervous fluttering in his chest as he flirted openly.
Alec smiled as Magnus mentioned rainbow pants causing him to get more competition. Alec could never see himself going out in public in rainbow pants. Magnus would be lucky if he could convince him to buy a couple colored shirts for his normally dark ensemble. But no matter what he wore, Alec couldn't picture Magnus having any competition.
"You know..fighting any demon, I'm confident and strong and I'm not unsure about anything, yet I still wish I could be as unself-conscious as you when it comes to us. I know it only matters what you and I think." He said, feeling a bit of shame for still not being able to be as comfortable with the situation as Magnus was, but knowing he wouldn't give up trying. He smiled softly looking over at his boyfriend as he gave him the reassurance he needed, telling him he really liked it. His hand automatically squeezed Magnus' for a moment holding onto him tighter. .
Alec nodded as Magnus suggested that if they needed to they could always go back to his place for drinks. It seemed more comforting a thought to be alone, but Alec knew he wanted to try to at least start out in public, on a normal date. But it may be a nice end to the evening, depending on how the night went. "We'll see how things go" He seconded the statement in agreement, then laughed as Magnus suggested they might get pulled into a battle. "Hopefully we can take the night off. I think we've earned it."

It was a rarity that Alec was open enough to flirt with him and Magnus committed it to memory as it happened. In all the years that came before, Magnus had never needed anyone else, never needed their reassurance or compliments now he found himself floating from Alec’s words. Magnus didn’t think of himself as Handsome. Old, cranky, outlandish, off the wall; but not handsome, if Alec thought him hansom then he’d take it. “Hey glitter can be scary, on the wrong person. I went to Vegas in the 70s and that was a just a whole scary side of the magical dust.” He said with a shudder and a slight laugh.
Perhaps rainbow pants were a little beyond his dark Nephilim, but Magnus vowed he’d get him in something brighter then his regular grey palette. Not that he didn’t love Alec in his dark tones, he’d like him in anything, it was just Magnus’ nature to throw a little color into things.
“I don’t care if we don’t should it from the roof tops, I’m happy with whatever you’re comfortable with.” Magnus told him looking to Alec to convey more then his words were saying. He wanted to say so much, to tell him how he felt, but that wasn’t Magnus’ style and he didn’t want to scare Alec with the intensity. When Alec’s hand put pressure on his own Magnus gripped back not ready to release it even if Alec wanted out. “Just go a day at a time, I wasn’t always as out as I am. Though I had a few hundred years, old man over here and all.” Magnus smirked making a joke to lighten the mood but sending over true sentiment in it.
Drinks back as his place would finish the evening off perfect Magnus thought and hoped Alec would agree, but in truth he was happy whatever they did. As for been pulled into battle it was a strong possibility with all that had been happening. “Night off sounds good, but we’ll see who calls and pulls us in first.” He laughed knowing that anything could happen with their group of friends.
