That's the key for me. He started the inning with a low pitch count and he was facing the worst offense in baseball. The only reason for a quick hook I can see is if the trainers and / or pitching coach are concerned about fatigue. Otherwise it's the perfect time for him to stretch out a bit. And earn something.
The young Bill James rather famously wrote that he could not find any evidence that certain types of players could consistently hit better in the clutch – he still has not found that evidence. But unlike his younger self, he will not dismiss the idea of clutch hitting.
