Title: 2012 Yankees
ThinMan - April 26, 2012 09:42 PM (GMT)
Michael Pineda to have season-ending shoulder surgery. Suddenly their starting pitching depth is looking quite a bit shallower.

You forget about Andy Pettitte's new HGH prescription.

I was surprised by the trade - not because the Mariners let him go, but because the MFY's ignored the fairly obvious red flag of first half performance / second half performance disconnect.
He was soooo good, and then he wasn't. It was too dramatic a change. I don't think he was injured at the time of the trade, I think he was fatigued in the second half (normal for a young pitcher), but maybe pushed himself too hard and didn't recover. He weakened something and had an injury waiting to happen.
Even so, he and the folks in the Bronx might have gotten lucky. Instead, the rest of the AL East has an easier road ahead. For now.

for me its about the lineup which seems old though i still believe they have the best player in the division now in cano.
ThinMan - May 1, 2012 08:24 PM (GMT)
They can have Cano. I'm very happy with our 2nd baseman.

we have 2 and 3 petey and gonzo,i just wish i could get behind this pitching staff,i cant help but think they have the edge.
rominer - May 2, 2012 05:12 PM (GMT)
I have a hard time buying that Cano is the best player in the division. He's obviously in the mix, but I don't think it's even a given that he's the best player on the Yankees (Curtis Granderson would have an argument there).
Jose Bautista in the past couple of years, and Evan Longoria over the course of his career – and with the trajectory that he's on – both come to mind as arguably better than Cano.
Matt Wieters is a guy who I wouldn't call "better" – but if I'm building a team out of players in this division, I'd probably pick him before picking Cano.

David Ortiz is our best player right now according to Fangraphs.
Do you know who's second on our team and well ahead of Cano?
Mike Aviles.
I agree with Thin, they can have Cano.

love loyalty, but its hard to argue what we have seen, pedey is great but hestill is the second best 2nd baseman, maybe wieters is who you start with because of the position, but for now ill stand on my belief.

It's still early in the season of course. We still need another 100 PA from each before this reaches the level of statistically significant. But so far in 2012, in 109 PA for Pedroia and 107 for Cano, Pedroia has a TAv of .282 and Cano .231.
So far in 2012 Cano has been the better player, by a lot. The Yankees can have Cano. Any statement that Cano is the better second baseman, this year at least, is based on the lure of the magic pinstripes, not anything to do with reality.

Cano has been better?
How so?
Fangraphs has Pedey at .352 wOBA and Cano at .297. That's a big difference in our guy's favor, and wOBA is a stat I trust.
Their UZR is dinging Pedey for something (-2.9), but if you've watched the games you know it's an aberration of some kind. Our guy's defense has been spectacular. And UZR loves Cano (5.5). That needs explanation and video, otherwise it's suspect due to small sample size or some peculiarity in the measurement.

Could
Mariano Rivera?
He's not really much of an outfielder anymore.
macs3rd - May 4, 2012 02:30 AM (GMT)
I tuned in late to Baseball Tonight, just in time to see him being carried off. Doesn't look good for Mo.
rominer - May 4, 2012 04:17 AM (GMT)
It sucks. He's the one Yankee that I kind of sort of like.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for him never to have so much as another save opportunity in his career. But I want it to be because the Yankees never have a lead. I hope the injury isn't too bad.
Offbase - May 4, 2012 10:50 AM (GMT)
Torn ACL.
Makes Bobby look good for not having the pitchers shag fly balls in ST. I wonder if they're doing it now that the season started, and if they are will they continue?

What's really wrong is that the Mariners got two minor league pitchers out of the deal.
Where are our two minor league pitchers for Darnell McDonald, who has been better than Ichiro for two seasons running?

It's especially deflating if it's 10 years ago. Or if you are Ichiro.
I misspoke earlier. Darnell McDonald has actually been better than Ichiro for the past three seasons.

No, not by much. And the point I was illustrating was not "Darnell McDonald was a great player, and we should have gotten something in return for him when he played for the Yankees for four games."
It's more, "The Yankees sure aren't afraid to spend big for a pinch runner."

the boston press have on balance said to sell.as i was afraid of at the start of the season the pitching staff had and has too many issues.though lester wasnt on my radar.im hoping that ben/larry do nothing, unless they can deal beckett, maybe beckett and sweeney for josh johnson and hanley, with the marlins paying some of hanleys deal.players who all could use fresh starts.

The Skankees are in the process of losing to the Rays, which will drop them into second place, 1/2 game behind Baltimore and only 1 1/2 ahead of Toronto.
We may not get to see the Sox in the playoffs, but I'm pulling to see the Yankees miss it too!
PRediction: Rays win the division, A's and O's make the wild card slots.
This stretch run is going to be entertaining after all.
Tomsoxfan - September 5, 2012 11:14 AM (GMT)
O's are tied with the Yanks for the East, and with the A's for the wildcard. Rays 1.5 games out.
