Title: World Series: Phillies at Rays
Description: Discussion; who are you with?
Sox Sweep Again - October 20, 2008 09:41 AM (GMT)
I unpinned the ALCS discussion, but it's right on top.
And now, the World Series.
I'm gonna wqtch this thing, and I think that a Tampa win really unseats the Skanks as "our rivals".
Fuck it, I say let's get behind Tampa, a young team of upstarts (us this year, actually, in a way) and make them our "rivals".
Fuck the Skanks, Go Tampa.
Rationalization is a good thing.

As I said last night, GO PHILLIES!!! Save us from cow bells!!!
I'm serious. If the Rays win the WS those wretched things will be here forever; if they lose, there's a chance their fans will consider them bad mojo. No guarantee of course, but it's enough to make me root against the cute no longer cinderella story Rays.
StartedIn67 - October 20, 2008 11:04 AM (GMT)
Yup. Go Phillies indeed. Death to cowbells! :VBG:
soxfaninnyc - October 20, 2008 12:31 PM (GMT)
Ahhh, who cares?
I have a mild dislike for the Rays overall, mostly Crawford and Bartlett at this point. I have a mild like for what the Rays represent, low payroll team playing smart and scouting really good talent with all those first picks they had. I find the cowbells mostly annoying, but even more annoying are the fans who have signs rooting for their cowbells. Hello? There's a baseball game going on too you know! While I really disliked this team in June, I've come to respect them, but I'm still light years from pulling for them.
I have a mild dislike for Phillie fans who seem to always hate their teams. I have a vague like for Ryan Howard and Chase Utley and mild dislike for Jimmy Rollins. My son being a Mets fan, I've kind of adopted the home town team as my NL B team, meaning I don't really like the Phils now.
I can't find a reason to get behind either team really. This could be one of the least watched World Series in TV history.
ThinMan - October 20, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
I always root for the AL team in the World Series, unless it's the Yankees. Go Rays!!
Red Sox - Dodgers would have been good for ratings, but Phillies - Rays is good for baseball.

Observations:
1. We're unanimous here at work that this will be the "2008 Who Gives A Shit Series".
2. Tampa Bay fans have a LONG way to go before they can be considered real fans. Any crowd that needs a sign telling them to make noise is a clueless crowd indeed, and probably has no idea what the hell is going on down on the field.
3. Cowbells SUCK. As do most fan props (And I'm not talking about signs...signs are acceptable). Add Thunder sticks, towels, and rally monkeys to that Suck List as well.
4. Frankly, I'm tired of the Rays, and I'm tired of their fans. OK, great...they won. They were the better team. Good for them. Tip of the hat and all that. Now GO AWAY.
5. I'm just glad it's not the Dodgers in the World Series. We'd NEVER hear the end of it because of the Manny angle.
6. In fact, let's thank Heaven above that we were spared THIS festering turd of an idea: Dodgers-Yankees World Series. :weg:
macs3rd - October 20, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
I'll be cheering on our league and rooting for the Rays.
expat pete - October 20, 2008 02:11 PM (GMT)
Rooting for the Phillies, 'cause I live here and like the team.
BUT -- The Phillies are going to be steamrolled. The Phillies' pitching is not even of the same league. Hamels is the only guy equipped to win a game. The rest of the Phillies Rotation is going to be walloped.
I feel bad for Phillies fans.
Rays in 5.
xero2099 - October 20, 2008 04:34 PM (GMT)
1. that is what happens when you make the basement yur home since you came into the league all those high draft picks eventually make you good
2. never have i seen so many bandwagon fans in one place, during the regular season they couldn't even sell the place out
3. i think except for the philly market this will beone of the lowest tv rating the Ws will ever get
3. I could give a shit who wins

The silver lining :
| QUOTE |
| just figured I'd get it out of the way early, because you know there's going to be all manner of bitching and moaning about how a Rays/Phillies World Series won't be sexy enough for TV types. As Evan Longoria would say: 'Whatever.' Understand that anything bad for Fox is generally good for society as a whole- um, I think I've written that before, no? - and also understand that the Subway Series between the Yankees and Mets was a ratings dud, too. Network TV is just a small portion of the baseball telecast universe. True, we'd all have preferred Dodgers-Red Sox or Cubs-Red Sox - and you probably would, too - but this is all you've got. |

I didn't do a study or survey, but I have a hunch that well more than 75 percent of those "Rays fans" had Derek Jeter merchandise at home, if you know what I mean.

Won't watch a single pitch. Will go as long as I can to avoid finding out who won. If I'm watching ESPN and they start talking about it I'll change the channel. I've developed an incredibly strong dislike of the Rays, and I can't wait until the Sox regroup and reload and run those fucking punks into the ground next year.

Two area kids who help coach youth ball in the offseason are Rays farmhands (Mike McCormick and Ryan Royster) and a regional Rays bird dog hangs his hat in these parts...........I guess there's a connection there........so this is Rays country for the Series
ThinMan - October 20, 2008 05:47 PM (GMT)
I'm in Carlos Peņa's hometown several times a week. Go Rays!!
Startedin67Jr. - October 20, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
I'm rooting for the Rays.
They have been the doormat for all of the American league and now is their time to shine.
I've always liked the team, even when they were sucking, because I like their players. Their fans can go straight to hell and shove their cowbells where the sun don't shine, but the players deserve it
As a Sox fan, I want to know that we were beat by the champs, that softens the blow a little bit, but if the Rays lose this series, that will make me feel worse becasue we would have beaten them.
I don't think that "The Rays beat us so I'm rooting for the Phillies" is a good reason because we were beat. We were clearly outplayed, we were beat up, and tihs is a rivalry that will definately grow over the next few years. These two teams are full of great farm systems so unfortunately the cowbells, which I do hate and think are useless, will stay around. All we need to do is gain homefield and that will minimize the annoyance. I hope the Yanks like the feel of third place, because it looks like they might be there a while.

In honor of the Rays' first WS appearance.
"Fuck the Rays, Fuck the Rays,
Step right up and scream "YOU SUCK!" at the Rays.
Shove that cowbell, up your ass
This teams' fans have less then no class.
Because the Rays are really suckin' on balls,
Hope they run headfirst into the wall.
Give 'em a yell! Give 'em a hand!
Let them know SOMEBODY's in the stands!
Come on and...
Fuck the Rays, Fuck the Rays,
Step right up and scream "YOU BLOW!" at the Rays.
Try to convince me, you're a fan,
The last 6 weeks are the first time you've sat in the stands.
The Rays are punks, they're going to fall,
Go in spikes high, give 'em a kick in the balls.
St. Pete, Tampa, nobody comes down,
To see the Rays,
Of ????? town,
Of ????? town!!!!!(team's named after a fucking body of water...Tamps BAY???)

Yeah, now I have to start really focusing on the Brady-less Pats, starting tonight (shudders)
oh well, have the Celtics in a couple weeks. :VBG:

Which is a huge problem for me, because the NBA stands for "National Boring Association" in my book.
The Pats look mediocre. I don't even know the name of a single hockey player anymore.
So... when do pitchers and catchers report?

I don't have a problem with the so-called Rays "bandwagon fans"
After all, in '67 you could get a choice seat at Fenway on the day of the game until things got real hot in September. And lots of people started to become Sox fans in '67...........or '75, or '86, or '04.
I'm not gonna pull rank on any of those Sox fans who joined up in pennant winning years, and I'm not gonna look down on Rays fans who started in '08.
Offbase - October 21, 2008 01:01 AM (GMT)
It's all about those cow bells for me. Can't get past them. I've always rooted for the AL, or abstained, and I certainly don't mind that there's a new good team in baseball. Maddon said some very nice things about our team last night - very emotional and respectful. I don't hate the Rays.
But baseball should be played outdoors and cow bells belong on cows.

GO PHILLIES!!!!!!
not becuz the MFR's beat us (well maybe a lil bit)
I lived in DE for awhile, so its almost like a home town team. My nephew is a big Phillies fan, so he will be happy
The Rays are mean and nasty. I don't like the way the played the game this year.. (even aside from the beating us part) all they need is Arod to complete the collection.
The Phillies are a good team, and I like the Flyin' Hawaiian ..
Their colors are similiar to ours so if I don't wear my glasses, maybe I can pretend they are us

as much as i hate AND I MEAN HATE to say it i belive that the mfr's have the best shot at winning everything is going right for them they seem to have the "it" factor in there favor right now

I think the Rays will take them in 5 games. I'll be shocked if they dont show or succumb under pressure. After the last series, pressure of this WS should be nil.

In those rare few moments where I have absolutely NOTHING on my mind and am actually giving a festering rat's posterior about the World Sillies, I'm pulling for the Phillies.
And even though it certainly won't happen, I'd love to see the Series go only 4 games. Best to end it quick, so we can get to the REAL interesting stuff: teams' off-season moves, particularly our own beloved Red Sox!
Interestingly enough, here at work, a bunch of people (including myself) showed up for work wearing Sox gear. It's almost like this group consciousness decided to pick today (Game 1 of the WS? No coincidence, I'm sure!) to show support of the team they WANTED to see in the series.
