Title: Byrd RHP 11-2 vs Carmona RHP 8-7
Description: It never gets old; 7:05 @ Fenway
macs3rd - September 24, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
Tonight the Red Sox take the field with a playoff berth firmly in hand and another October ahead. With streaks and slumps, trades and injuries, The Red Sox have prevailed and Post season play comes once again to Fenway. Paul Byrd will pitch for Boston against a team he knows well, hopefully using that familiarity to help the Red Sox win their 93rd game of the 2008 season. Carmona makes his first appearance against the Red Sox this year after being ejected Friday for beating Gary Sheffields head in with help from most of the team. (ok noone's all bad lol) Let's hope he's got that out of his system and can help the Indians to their 79th loss of the season. David Ortiz has lead the way in this clinch week and will hopefully bash a few out over the Monster.
Red Sox (92-65)
Scouting Report:
Indians: Carmona has appealed a six-game suspension for his role in Friday's bench-clearing brawl with the Tigers and, barring a quick appeals process, will make his final start of '08. Before he duked it out with Gary Sheffield in the seventh inning, Carmona showed much improvement from what he's done in what has become a disappointing 2008 campaign. The right-hander commanded the strike zone and induced a number of ground balls by locating his nasty sinker where he wanted it. His tendency to overthrow in tight situations wasn't a problem because, well, he didn't have many to deal with. His only problem was Miguel Cabrera, who knocked a pair of two-run homers off Carmona before the righty was ejected after 6 1/3 innings. Carmona has yet to face the Red Sox this season, but is 1-2 with a 5.00 ERA in three career appearances (one start).
Red Sox: The right-hander produced a quality start in his last outing, giving up three runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays. For Byrd, this will be his first start against the Indians since being traded by Cleveland to the Red Sox on Aug. 12. For the Indians this season, Byrd was 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA. Byrd is 4-2 in seven starts since joining the Red Sox. Only once since coming to Boston has Byrd gone fewer than six innings. In three Fenway starts, Byrd is 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA.
STREAK ON TO THE FUTURE!!!!!! GO SOX!!!!

In a who cares game id like to see the vets sat down.this is not a healthy team.i suggest reading tony mazzes last 2 pieces thet give a very good appraisal of all this health stuff.
meanjean80 - September 24, 2008 12:33 PM (GMT)
Given that the division is looking pretty unlikely, I'd like to get our group as healthy as possible to face the Angels. That includes resting Lowrie, who looks fried right now.
Props to Tampa Bay, by the way, for not folding like a cheap tent like we all thought they would. (And for the record, Cheap Tent might be a good nickname for The Trop).
But even with playing our B Team, here's to Macs bringing us home!
ghostofdouggriffin - September 24, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
We're not getting the division, so let's rest and get ready to knock the halos off the Angels. I like the idea of giving Byrd this start to keep him sharp, but I wouldn't mind seeing Dice-K and Lester skip their next starts. The Skank series means nothing with the exception of them trying to keep us from winning the division, which ain't happening anyway unless Tampa loses out.

No matter who takes the field, I am not counting this team out for tonight. We've had some injuries and seen some less established players step it up. We've got a lot of talent on the bench and this is the time of year to flash it.

That is what got the Red Sox to this point: when one goes down another steps in. What if Drew hadn't picked up for Papi? What if Lester hadn't turned out to be such an ace, with Schilling gone? As someone I admire says "We Can Do It!"

We don't know that yet. The Yankees are playing in Toronto tonight, and the BJ's would LOVE to finish ahead of the Yankees. AJ Burnett will be on the mound.

I'd love to see the Skanks finish fourth.
And I'd love to see our roster rested the rest of the way.
And I love that the closing Skanks series will mean:

Love to see Drew back, he'll need some game to get into the oove. Also love that Lowrie gets a break, he needs one bigtime. This is alreay a ot more games than he's ever played in his carreer. Carter professiona hitter but rumor has it that he's as bad as Manny in LF.
