Well, I was wondering about something, said thing being the SATs. Anyway, do they have the SATs or an equivalent of them in America, and are they marked in the same manner as those in the U.K (Level 1, 2 , 3, 4, 5, etc.)? Meh, I only thought about it just then, considering that I take my SATs a week on Monday.

Oh, and for those that are not sure what SATs are, they're the Standard Assessment Tests taken by all British children in Years Two, Six, and Nine.

they're just a series of tests relating to english, maths, and science that are graded with national curriculum levels from 1 to 8. 1 being the lowest and 8 the highest.

13/14 years olds do them near the end of their school year.

I do some kind of multiple choice test that takes a few days to finish almost every year. It might be all of the school switching, though. I've had SAT's (Standard Aptitude Test), CAT's (California Aptitude Test), and CST's (California Star Testing).

We have EQAO here though it doesn't count towards anything. From what I understand, people elsewhere have standardized tests that actually matter. Hm. o-o

I've done all of them... and they're all completely utterly pointless. Well done America for not wasting your children's lives like that.

We have something like them. I take it they're standard fill-in-the-bubble tests?

Erm.. kind of. The teachers tend to get OCDs over the SATs and make us revise ourselves to within an inch of our lives.

Also in grade 10, you're given this EQAO Literacy Test. Turns out if you don't pass it throughout your years of high school, you won't be able to get your diploma at grad =/ The EQAO thing only applies to Ontario, Canada schools. Probably some other name in other provinces.

Yay America for not wasting our lives pointlessly but boo for pressuring us to STUUUDYY SO MUCH AND PUT HOMEWORK AT THE SAME TIME.

The US does have an SAT test, but it sounds nothing like the British SAT test.

The SAT's are a nationally administered test, which anyone in the US may take starting in their junior year of high school. They're divided up into two or three parts, depending on the version of the test that you pay to take: always at least reading and math, and if you pay for the SAT + Writing test, there's a writing section as well. Each section is scored out of 800 points; for each question you get wrong, you get -1.25 points, so it's known as a test where you don't guess if you don't know the answer (because for every four questions you get wrong, it's another point off, plus you don't get any "correct answer" points).

The test is primarily multiple-choice, though there are a handful of written math questions and the writing, obviously, involves essay writing (although I believe there's some multiple choice grammar stuff there, too).

The scoring is based on positive points, and is out of a total 1600 or 2400, depending on the test that you took. The test is not required, but a great number of colleges do require that you send a score in for admission, so it's required if you plan to go to many colleges. Those colleges that don't require you to take the SAT require ACT scores instead.

I'm taking my SAT test next Saturday. Blargh.
