<Crystal> I am thrilled that everyone is here to chat. I can speak for myself and my castmates because they know about this chat. This has support has meant so much to everyone in the cast including me. So let's get started.
<CrystalCCF> BBK: Hi Crystal!! You have been absolutely brilliant this week!! I was completely overwhelmed with emotion during Olivia's heart stopping confession of love to Natalia. How did you ever prepare yourself to film those scenes?
<Crystal> Those scenes were actually taped a week after what aired today in the gazebo. It was so well written that it's easy to tap into what's going on. It was that moment that I was waiting for and the fans have been waiting for...that moment of finally telling Natalia that I'm in love with her. I have been wanting to tell a classic soapy love story for so long. It's been so much fun, I've loved it.
<CrystalCCF> Julesischappelled: Hi Crystal, just letting you know that I've been Chappelled to infinity (so has BPD AfterDark)! Could we expect Otalia to have honest, intimate and passionate scenes, much like the Bo/Carly honeymoon, without having 'other issues' interfere?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: Wow...um...lol...yeah, I mean, in these next beats, we're going to try to figure out how to be together...it's the discovery of their relationship. They know that they love each other. They know that it's real.... ever been with men, even the touch of the other person's hand...the softness of the other perosn's hand is new to them. And, really... So that's where they are. It's actually very tender and it's very very sweet, and I thnk it's honest. It's sort of a continuation of the love story between the two of them.
<Reileen> I first need to thank you for bringing into my home one of the most honest and visceral performances of one's struggle to find its love's ultimate resolution. My question is this: How do you prepare yourself for emotionally raw scenes like Olivia's confession to Natalia at Gus's grave right before the wedding?
<Crystal> This story is touching me. It's changed me. I'm such a fan of LOVE...and the story is about that and I think we've been lacking it for a long time. I live for those big, gut wrenching, totally honest moments. So, what I do is learn the lines and go into my imagination and forget what I'm doing and see what happens. It's total abandon and that's partof the fun. It's total abandon and I love it.<OtaliafanDC> As a fan, this week I have felt like someone ripped my heart out and tossed it into a wood chipper. Don't get me wrong, I've loved every painful second of it and I thank you. But how do you go from such an intense physically emotional story line as Olivia back to being Crystal?
<Crystal> I can walk away. I'm happy to walk away when it's done because it is painful. I've learned how important it is to leave work at work and walk away.
<CrystalCCF> oliviagotjokes: Thank you for doing this!! Is that a tattoo on your ankle? Is there a story behind it? Do tell !
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: Yeah, I have a tattoo on my ankle. It's a rose. Yeah, there's no real story...You know, I think I just wanted a tattoo. I just decided that I wanted some body art, so one afternoon I just went and got it. I'd like to get another one. I want to get an angel that's peeking over my hip.
<CrystalCCF> bethnewton1: HELLO WHAT DID U THINK ABOUT KISSING A WOMAN? AND U R SOOO BEAUTIFUL AND A TRUE GODDESS!!!! I LOVE U!!!!
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: LOLOL ...I've kissed a woman before...as an actor I've kissed women before. I've had this acting situation before. I've masturbated on stage...it's my career. It comes with the territory. That was not entirely new, but I just like it in context of this relationship. It came out of something really innocent at the moment. She's really pretty and she's sweet, and honestly, we didn't have a problem. It was very exciting for our crew... It was a big moment for them...but, you know...
<Bonnie> Hi Crystal from sleepy England! Not that your acting isn't enough for us (believe me, it is, especially after this week!) but have you ever had a role in which you had to sing or play a musical instrument, and if not, would you be able to? Do you enjoy singing or playing music? You have a piano, right? By the way, you have looked absolutely radiant in the show this week.
<Crystal> Gosh thanks...it was the snow. I don't play an instrument. I wish I did. Funny enough I just sang with this big opera singer at a party, just as a fun thing. She's helping me. I;m trying to work up the nerve to do it.
<CrystalCCF> lnmorris: Hi Crystal, first thank you and Jessica for such amazing
performances over the last year as this storyline has been buidling, it is so real and honest. What is your response to those who are against this relationship being on GL?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: I'm against a lot of relationships on television...you know, it's not for everybody. I don't really have a good answer to that. It's just...you can't make it work for everybody, but I do think that...my personal opinion...that we've touched a lot of people that love is universal. It's not gender SPECIFIC IT'S ABOUT DIGNITY.
<CrystalCCF> ktcd074: Has there been any updates on Lifetime picking up Guiding Light? <CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: I know as much as everybody else, which is nothing. We're all pretty much in the dark. Nobody's saying anything to anyone. very quiet in the studio. Honestly, I don't have any answers. The actors know less than the fans at this point, I think.
<Cabenson> Rarely do we find a television show where the writing and the acting gel so beautifully that the viewing audience is gifted with the opportunity to 201cfeel201d the emotion of a scene along with the characters. That said, in regards to the Olivia/Natalia storyline, what has been your favorite scene to play and why?
<Crystal> I really loved this week. Because it took us well over a year to get to it. I loved the writing this week...the confession, Oliva's profession of love and today with Natalia talking to Olivia. Those have been my favorite scenes.
<critter> Hi, a question for the goddesss, er Crystal...what is your idea for a romantic date with Olivia and Natalia
<Crystal> Good question. I honestly see them keeping it very simple...I think that Olivia should cook for Natalia and build a fire in their little farmhouse house of love... that Olivia would share her food with Natalia. Olivia is actually a chef. I suggested this scene. San Cristobel treats to Natalia. Sharing food and wine...keeping it simple...would be very romantic.
<CrystalCCF> gheekchik: Anything can happen from here on out. GL might move to another network, some actors may stay, some may not, some may change careers, who knows. I'd like to know how you would want things to work out. What do you wish to be doing in the next couple of years p.s. You're the only one on tv that makes me cry! I heart you for that.
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: I have to keep acting. And, telling stories, and hope to [...] But I still have a lot of life left. You have to be that way. That's the feeling. We believe we have a good show.
<SlikChik> when word initially got out that the mayor Doris Wolfe would be outed as a lesbian, many fans were concerned that this twist seemed antithetical to keeping with the tone of the Otalia story as "label free". However, Doris' inclusion in the storyline- especaially as counselor to olivia in the aftermath of the near kiss and her prodding olivia to rescue natalia from the "wedding of doom" has been nothing short of brilliant. we've grown quite fond of doris- and orlagh- on the BPD board. Was there a greater purpose for including Doris- as a closeted lesbian- in this part of the storyline? Will we continue to see Doris as Liv's sounding board as she and Natalia move forward in their relationship?
<Crystal> I think Doris is an amazing character and I'm a HUGE fan of hers. I am assuming she will continue to be a friend to Olivia and Natalia. She represents a diffeent kind of energy in the story...to mentor Olivia. No other character would have worked.
<CrystalCCF> anniebee: Hi crystal if there is anything you would change about this weeks confessions what would it be?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: Well, the only thing I would have changed would be if it was a lot warmer...it was FREEZING that week we shot all that! But, no...I've been so lucky to have such a well-written story, and all any actor wants is to have a well-written story. I happen to like Ellen very much. She kept pulling it back last year when the writers wanted to move it forward, and kept it moving very slowly, and she was right about that. So, there's nothing other than the temperature that I would have changed.
<avidonfan> First of all: Bravo and thank you for this chat! My question: Olivia and Natalia have very complimentary personalities. In their public lives Olivia is strong, impulsive and confident, where Natalia is cautious, measured and sincere. They have learned to draw these qualities from each other and incorporate them into their own lives. As the story moves forward into this more private, though shared, internal place, will we see the same sort of yin and yang or will their just be some out right surprises?!
<Crystal> I think you'll see both the yin and yang that you are used to seeing, that's who they are...But they go away together for a weekend to explore what their relationship is... something happens that is different for them and talk to eachother. It's much more
emotional. They get into an argument and it's big and different for them...
<CrystalCCF> SimoneSays: This story has really touched me, I think I've had my heart ripped out of my chest at least three times this week and I love it, but I also miss the playful Otalia banter and most importantly, Olivia's jokes! Will humor be one of the ways Otalia copes with the next beat of their story? And what do you think is the next hurdle for them?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: Yes, we get back to the banter...they're trying to feel comfortable...this is very new to them. They ask each other questions...do we sit across from each other...do we sit next to each other. They're very conscious of this...One thing about Jessica...she has this very bawdy laugh that nobody hears...so it's fun to throw something in and get her to laugh, and have a good time with this...and their next beat is to discover how to have a relationship with each other. And Frank is part of the story, and so is Rafe. Those are the next big obstacles. <kkosatka> First of all thank you so much for lending your talent to this amazing storyline. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are the only woman on daytime capable of bringing these feelings to life onscreen, and especially in such a raw, realistic, and seemingly effortless way. Were you aware of the social impact this story, if told right, would bring? Do you feel a responsibility to the LGBT community in terms of the way you are playing this role, or are you just playing this as a "love story" without thinking that deeply about the social aspect? And rest assured
you're doing us all proud gay, straight or label-less!
<Crystal> Jill and I talked about the Children's Hour...we've been talking about this for about 7 years. I'm so thrilled as an actor to be able to tell a story that's different and relavant. I have no control over how they write it but I knew they would take good care of it. And that was exciting. Yes, I do feel responsible but it's also my responsibility to tell a good story. I have to learn to trust them. They've handled it well. Ellen pitched it as a love story with no labels. She wanted to reach out beyond the labels. Ironically, because of the nature of the story, between two women, they took even more care with it. And I think that's a big part of why it's worked. Shows have been under estimating an audiences willingness to wait for a good story.
<CrystalCCF> shelbygirl: Hi Crystal. What does your husband think of the whole Otalia phenomenon?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: Well, he loves the story. He's not a tv guy. He's a CNN guy. He watches it online. He's into it. He cries. He appreciates the story and he loves it.
<perseis> Hola Crystal, do you ever use your amazing acting ability when you're not playing a role? Like if you need to get out of jury duty or a speeding ticket? Do you only use your power for good, or do you ever go over to the dark side? Gracias for taking my question guapa.
Not sure why, but we didn't get an answer to this question, sorry perseis!
<kellycommakatie> On average, how many takes do you and Jess need to get through a scene? After watching the outtakes ON THE advocate.com, it seems like you two would crack up all the time.
<Crystal> We do it in one take. We rarely do a second take. I can speak for everybody. You pretty much have one shot, you have to go out there and do it. It's one of the things I admire most about my cast.<CrystalCCF> zimmer: First of all thanks so much for this! what is (or was) your greatest concern with where the writers might go with this story - and do you still feel that way?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: Um...I was concerned that it was going to happen too fast, that they weren't going to really take their time and allow these women to realize their feelings. But, I'm just speaking for me...as an actor, they've handled it beautifully...so I've just had to trust the writers. Ellen knows where they're going, so I just have to trust the wrtiters.
<SterlingMB> Hey Crystal thanks so much for talking with us today!! You're fabulous! How do you feel Olivia's AlphaWoman status will be affected by this new relationship? Will she still have that killer instinct in the same way? - it seems she's much softer now!!
<Crystal> Oh yes...I think she compartmentalizes her life. She's learned to love but she'll kill anyone in business. I don't think that has gone away at all. I think it makes her a far more interesting character.
<CrystalCCF> amandaln977: First of all, hi Crystal! With with the cancellation and uncertainty of Guiding Light at this point, I would like to know if the writers are going to move the relationship along at a faster pace than they had originally planned? If so, how will JL's maternity leave come into play
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: I can't answer anything for certain, because I have no idea about the timing. I believe they'll have two different versions of the story written. That's my guess. Something that will end the characters and something that will take us forward if the opportunity arises...that's what I've heard.
<katie> Thank you so much for all that you do and we're completely in love with this story line! Do you think that Otalia will someday have love scenes that are as suggestive/sensual as the love scenes of other GL couples and/or Olivia's past love scenes? Have you been advised on what exactly you can or cannot do as a same-sex couple on daytime? (question combined with KissMeOtalia)
<Crystal> I've not been advised. I know they will eventually have a love scene. But what it will look like I have no idea. I think they're really taking this a step at a time and seeing how fans react. The fan reaction plays a big part in how much futher they will go. It'd an interactive story.
<CrystalCCF> Rockie: Ms. Chappell...I hear that you are a writer...what types of things do you write and have you ever written anything for Guiding Light?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: I do write. I'm actually writing a pilot with my producing partner. And, it's scripted drama, but we're really just getting started. I hope to write a soap script in the next couple of years. I actually have a friend who works for OL who hopes to help me in the next month or so. I think it's very hard to do.
<DoubleV7> First of all, I just wanted to say thank you for the commitment that you and Jessica have shown in the portrayal of this story. It really hits very close to home for me. Your acting is incredible, and you're beautifully gifted. My question is- With all your experience as an actress playing romances with men, how is it different playing against a woman? What has been your biggest challenge in portraying this romantic story?
<Crystal> I think just, I was concerned that I would be written as a leading MAN because Olivia has a stronger personality. I was very sensitive to that. I constantly would say to Jill or Ellen, this is girl on girl. They've been great. I trust them.
<FourCast> As a mother, I'd like to know how much of your relationship with your sons carry into Olivia's relationship with Emma. Olivia is such a great mother and is so different with Emma than anyone else. I love it. Also, I read an interview where you expressed a desire to adopt in the future. Do you still hope to do this? I have two sons through adoption- they are a wonderful gift.
<Crystal> I relate to all kids the same way. I'm a big kid. The way I talk to Emma is the way I talk to my sons. Although at times Jess and I treat Emma as the only one who knows what's going on. And that little girl keeps wandering off...doesn't she? Adoption still is very present in plans for my future.
<Zebeza> Hi Crystal. Great acting BTW. You made me cry this week! It's pretty obvious how this relationship has changed Olivia and what she gets from Natalia, but what do you think it is that Natalia gets from Olivia?
<Crystal> Good question. I think Natalia has someone in her life who loves her for who she is and sees beyond what everyone else sees. Her potential as a person. I don't think that Natalia has really had that before. Olivia is a passionate person...she wants Nat to be completly who she is. That's pretty powerful, to have someone in your life who wants you to be totally who you are. That's what she gets from Olivia, I think.
<CrystalCCF> guidingbrandi: first must say your my favorite actress..do you ever practice your script with micheal and is it easy for you to cry on cue? also, typically how long of days do you work on set and how is it to work with the cute little Jacqueline Tsirkin?
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: My days are usually pretty short or we'll shoot three shows in one day. The engagement party we shot three shows in one day, so it was a long day, but I only worked two days that week. And Jacqueline is just an amazing kid. she's totally there. She listens to you. She's really great. She's just a normal kid. She's adorable.
<CrystalCCF> savethelight: Hey Ms. "Goddess" Chappell, lol...you are such an amazing actress I swear!!!!...My question is since GL is coming to an end, would you like to see the story of Otalia continued on another network ..meaning having your own show??
<CrystalCCF> CrystalChappell: Does that show come with craft services...yes, of course...let's shoot it on the web! I'm very intrigued by that idea. I like this couple and I like this story, I would want the same writers. It's not just the couple, it's the writers. It's the family...I don't know what the couple would be without the family and the writers.
<Crystal> Thank you all for being so supportive not only of Guiding Light but of Otalia. It means a lot to everyone. Have another glass of wine on me. Thank you all for being here. Goodnight.
Apologies to xgfanapUK and marymartin. There were some technical issues and so the chat had to end just before they planned to do so. These questions are worth reading, though!
<xgfanapUK> Thank you Crystal for talking to us. What are the things you most and least like about Olivia?
<marymartin> It looks like your entire cast is close and has a lot of fun together. Are cast members giving the producer and directors ideas on how to camoflauge Jessica's pregnancy as her due date gets nearer and she gets bigger? Can we look forward to seeing the two of you behind a volkwsagon bug in future scenes?
