ah now, I know who he is after watching 2009 Lost Memories too.

Apparently, he is in Taeguki with Won Bin.

Jang Dong-gun (b. March 7, 1972), also famous as a singer and fashion model, acted in his first film in 1997. As popular as he is in Korea, he he has even more fans throughout Southeast Asia, where his TV dramas have made him a major star.

In 1999, after acting in the critically acclaimed Nowhere to Hide as Park Joong-hoon's younger partner, Jang moved on to star in a feature that was filmed on location in Shanghai. Titled The Anarchists, this tale of five young terrorists from 1930s China helped to elevate his status even further within his home country.

Jang's most famous role came in early 2001 in Friend, the biggest Korean film of all time. After playing the nice guy in almost all his previous roles, this portrayal of a gangster from Pusan has led him to local stardom. He also starred in the popular action blockbuster 2009 Lost Memories set in a futuristic Great Japan.

After appearing in the low-budget film The Coast Guard by controversial director Kim Ki-duk, Jang starred in Kang Je-gyu's Taegukgi, an epic film about two brothers set during the Korean War that became the best-selling Korean film of all time.

Here is an old Time Asia Magazine article about him for those who likes to know more about his private side.

http://www.time.com/time/asia/arts/magazin...,173503,00.html

SEPTEMBER 10, 2001, VOL.158 NO.10
Burdened with Good Looks
Jang Dong Gun
BY DONALD MACINTYRE

Korea's No. 1 heartthrob doesn't date. It's not that Jang Dong Gun, 29, lacks opportunities to meet women. Lunching recently at a noodle shop in a trendy part of Seoul, Jang, by his mere presence, sent the women at a nearby table into paroxysms of girlish twittering. Soon, a crowd of girls gathered outside the restaurant window. By the end of the meal there were dozens of women jostling for position outsideis manager had to help him push his way through the throng. This kind of thing sometimes follows Jang when he leaves South Korea. In Vietnam last year, thousands of women packed Ho Chi Minh City's stadium for his concert, crying hysterically and screaming "I love you." It seems all Jang would need to do to find a girlfriend is just point. But he is plagued with a conscience. "I would love to go out with a normal girl, holding hands or whatever," he says. "But it is a delicate matter here. Once she goes out with me, the whole country will know." And if they break up? "She will be remembered as Jang Dong Gun's ex. She will be a 'woman with a past.'"

In any case, Jang is becoming uncomfortable with his drop-dead good looks. With his role in the megahit Friends, he is finally shedding his pretty-boy image, playing a gang boss in a tough port town. But it was the face that got him into acting, of course. On his way to and from school, reps for advertising and modeling agencies, who scour the streets for fresh faces, repeatedly handed him their business cards. His parents disapproved, urging him to concentrate on his studies. But he phoned one of the agencies and ended up doing a soap commercial. "Only my body was shown," he says. An agent later suggested he try movies, so he went for an audition. He got the part and has climbed the ladder to stardom, usually playing handsome teenyboppers. "That good-looking face," he says, "can become a handicap, at least in acting."

To build up credit as an actor, he works hard and shuns the party scene. For Friends, he spent four months in Pusan learning the rough local accent. Before each shoot, he smoked heavily (even more than his usual two to three packs a day) and avoided watero give his voice a raspy edge. When he's not filming, he spends time at his parents' or goes out with friends. "I prefer to live a quiet life," he says. If only those women would let him eat his noodles in peace.

Jang Dong Gun and Lee Jung Jae are super friends yet both have never worked together on a movie. This time they finally had the chance. For the new movie "Typhoon", Lee Jung Jae would play the role of a brave Korean naval officer. Jang Dong Gun will be a North Korean pirate!

To know the role well, they each trained already. Jang Dong Gun has lost weight for the movie and has bronzed himself with a tan so that he has to display the quality of a pirate. He practiced Russian, Thai language and other languages and the Northern dialect of Korea.

Lee Jung Jae has undergone 3 months of training including learning how to descend from the top, and many special weapons so that he could feel more engrossed in the role.

Typhoon has started filming on October 30, and will be show next year in December.

As the weather turned cold all of a sudden in Korea, Jang Dong Gun is suffering as he started filming from Nov 12 for the movie TYPHOON where he wore summer wear - a T-shirt.

Jang himself is worried if he could stand the cold and hoped that he would not affect the filming schedule.

According to the company, soon they would have to do filming in water and they hoped that both actors Jang Dong Gun and Lee Zhen Zai 李振宰 would be fit enough for the scene. They understood that both have trained their bodies and should be healthy enough to withstand cold.

"The Promise" aims for 2006 Oscar

www.chinaview.cn 2004-11-16 13:28:57

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese mainland A-list director Chen Gaige's new blockbuster, The Promise, is reported to be aimed at next year's Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, and even the 2006 OSCARs.

The 300 million yuan magic epic saga finished its painstaking six-month shoot in September and has begun its fourteen months long production.

Following in the footsteps of Zhang Yimou's martial arts movie House of Flying Daggers, this much-touted saga is planned to be screened at the Cannes and Venice Film festivals and compete for Oscar Awards.

The film stars 23-year-old Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung, actor Nicholas Tse Ting and Korean actor Jang Dong Gun.

Taegukgi is DEFENITELY a movie worth to watch. It's a story of two brothers, who are forced to go to war, and the older one wants to do everything to send the younger one home. How much everything: you must see the movie to see smile.gif
The movie is made very realistic way: it's war and you can see it, you can see every terrible and cruel aspect of it. If you ask me then I say it's Taegukgi that should get that international Oskar ... And I hope it gets it.

Silmido' Tops 25th Blue Dragon Awards
November 29, 2004

http://cinemato.cine21.co.kr/cinemato/phot...1?photo_id=4036

The blockbuster ``Silmido'' garnered three prizes _ Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor Award _ at the 25th Blue Dragon Awards ceremony, held in Seoul on Tuesday.

At the ceremony held at the Main Hall of the National Theater of Korea in Changchung-dong, Seoul, director Kang Woo-suk was on hand to receive the prizes for his film, a Cold War thriller based on a true story about a suicide commando unit created in the late 1960s to assassinate North Korean leader.

``I never asked actors in my movie to play their role best,'' said Kang in his acceptance speech on Monday. ``All I told them was to take care since it was risky. And now I want to see them all.''

Kang is currently filming his next movie ``Konggongui Chok 2 (Public Enemy2),'' a sequel for his detective drama starring Sul Kyung-gu, who also starred in both the original ``Public Enemy'' as well as ``Silmido.''

Jang Dong-gun won the best actor award for his role in ``Taegukgi,'' while Lee Na-young received the best actress award for her role in ``Anun Yoja (Someone Special).''

Jang said in his congratulatory speech: ``This is what I really wanted to get, so I am really happy and I thank all of staff members who worked for the film.'' Jang was sporting long hair, which he grew to play a pirate in his new movie ``Taepung (Typhoon).''

Lee was in tears and nearly unable to finish her acceptance speech, visibly overcome by emotion over winning the best actress award.

The Most Popular Actor Awards went to four actors: Kang Dong-won from
``Nukdaeui Yuhok (Two Guys Meet a Girl)''; Kwon Sang-woo from ``Maljukgori Chanhoksa (The Spirit of Jeekeundo _ Once Upon a Time in High School)''; Moon Keun-young from ``Orin Sinbu (My Little Bride)''; and Kim Jung-eun from ``Nae Namja-ui Romance (How to Keep My Love).''

A total of 21 movies were nominated out of 68 works that opened between
Nov. 26, 2003, and Oct. 31, 2004. The selection was made by Internet users and experts on movies. An 11-member jury decided the final winners in the 16 categories.

Other Blue Dragon recipients included Jung Jae-young who received the Best Supporting Actor prize for ``Silmido''; Yeom Jung-a the Best Supporting Actress prize for ``Pomchoe-ui Chaegusong (The Big Swindle) ''; Jae-hui the Best New Actor prize for ``Pinjip (3 Iron)''; and Soo-Ae the Best New Actress prize for ``Kajok (A Family).'' Choi Dong-hun received awards for best script and best new director for his movie ``The Big Swindle.''

Oh, that's great news that Kang Woo-suk is going to make Public Enemy2. I saw the first film and I really enjoyed it. I urge all you grrrls to see it. There's an interesting shower scene provided by Lee Song-jae. I wont give any details because it is very naughty. laugh.gif I also thought Sul Kyung-gu was great in Public Enemy 1 and I'm glad to see he will be in the second film. Now I must make sure I see Silmido.

Here is an older article from May, 2004 about the movie shooting of The Promise.

News about "The Promise" and Jang Dong Gun

http://www.popcornfor2.com/cgi-bin2/phpBB2...dbbd1fb98f7aa88

While the film กฐHouse of Flying Daggersกฑ is for sale in the streets, กฐThe Promiseกฑ is still working day and night. Compared to the indoor shooting in Beijing Film Plant and Hengdian Palace, the outdoor shooting for vast scenes in Yun Nan gives a lot of hard time for กฐThe Promiseกฑ group. Temperature in the shooting field is almost 40 degrees Celcia during the day time, and there are more than 1000 extras and 200 oxen. All these make one feel suffered by only sitting there, not to say to have a screening. However, the reporter learned yesterday that the shooting of กฐThe Promiseกฑ in Yun Nan has been very smooth, though under various difficulties. By completion of the shots in Yuan Mou (Yun Nan) at the beginning of June, the whole group will go to Shangri-La, and it will hold a Tibet style opening ceremony in local.

The shooting part in Tu Lin scenery field and the banana field of Yuan Mou are mostly on Jang Dong Gun and Hiroyuki Sanada, and the screen includes the vast scene of a men-oxen fighting. To get the best result, the group specially shipped 200 oxen from Shangri-La to here. This kind of ox has very attractive appearance. It has curved horns and big and bright eyes. But the bad news is that 3 of 200 oxen are dead due to the 10 several days of overloading work. Because it has been raining recently in Yun Nan, the group has to stop shooting for 3 days. In these 3 days, only Jang Dong Gun went back to Korea, others are staying in the hotel. The weather makes the shooting schedule in Yuan Mou postponed. It is learned that the most important part of กฐThe Promiseกฑ shooting will be in Shangri-La. The total time will be around 1 month. All the leads including Cecilia Chang, Nicholas Xie, Jang Dong Gun, Hiroyuki Sanada, Liu Yi, and Cheng Hong will have the shots. And the one-to-one performance between actors and actresses will be mostly finished here. Besides of big scenes of fighting, the childhood part of Cecilia and Nicholas will be screened here. After that the group will go back to Beijing Film Plant to continue the shooting. And the film will be finished of shooting in August.

Though actors and actresses are from 3 countries in กฐThe Promiseกฑ, language is not a barrier, and the modesty of Jang Dong Gun is especially praised by all. Although Jang Dong Gun and Hiroyuki Sanada have to say Chinese during the performance, their solid skills do not at all affect the screening schedule. While the group is screening in Yun Nan, food is another big problem they have to face, besides of high temperatures. But the lead actors still insist to have the same meals as others, and say it humorously as they were on a diet.
