Wood elves have it better than most I think...
Think about it, they have a unique play style and a range of beautiful plastic models and some sexy characters. Also the uniformed season painting style is nice and looks like great fun. the only problem with them is that internet optimus primes don't like them because their army book isn't competitive. IE you need some skill to win and you cant beat the broken armies. I hear WoC are next and have heard dwarfs have been in the mix for some time. -------------------- You are guilty! I don't know about you, but Eternal Guard being as bad as they are and only being offered in metal (Core infantry, in metal 5-packs? Ugh!) would bother me.

Just pray they go to standard plastic if they do instead of failcast.

I would like to say I see Eternal Guard being a plastic kit but man,.. i can seem them getting the Finecast treatment.
I like the Eternal Guard models fine. They are also the same as any other 5-man metal elf Special slot (only core with a Highborn). They can perform when combo charged with 6 Treekin and backed with Life. It's not a good solution but a usable one. -------------------- |

EG are actually Core, and they're bad Core at that. I can pull up the numbers I've run on them, but they basically get their faces kicked in by other fighty Core infantry, even with a Highborn with the Rhymer's Harp providing a blanket 5+ Ward. Picking them instead of Glade Guard is frankly a mistake right now, and that's a shame.
Also, I have to believe they'll get a plastic kit. Core as anything other than plastic is a daft decision on GW's part, in my opinion. -------------------- "The best defense is a good offense." -Gen. George S. Patton

Not saying they're useless, but rather that they're out-performed by Glade Guard. Glade Guard are actually pretty solid units - I think they'd be fantastic if the S4 was on all the time, though. As someone who has studied Wood Elves extensively, I think it's critical to accept that anything that's not a Forest Spirit in that army can't fight worth a damn (and even then, Wild Riders also suck), and plan accordingly.

Fair enough, but it makes a better hoard than most things in the book, except for treekin maybe, but I think if your hoarding woodies then you are playing against the spirit of the army.

Yeah, hording Wood Elves doesn't really work. An MMU style with 6-man units of Tree Kin, Treemen, and 10-12 man units of Glade Guard and Dryads seems to handle itself quite well, all things considered.

Wood elves can be made to work - as rothgar says, the player just needs to load out on those few units that are effective. Glade guard can be very dangerous, 6 treekin is a solid unit, as is the treeman. Almost same price as ghorgon with two saves and that great shooting attack is just ridiculous. Eagle is a fantastic redirector and can be used to expose an army like ours to round after round of shooting. But they are definitely an army that needs to be min-maxed to the extreme in order to work - no room for fluffy builds really.
Back on topic: I would love to see Wood Elves get the next update because I think they're a really interesting army and I don't want to see them forgotten about. I think there is lot of scope for some really beautiful models. Based on the trend towards monstrous-cav-for-all I can foresee a stag rider unit which might be cool. Who do I THINK will be next? Warriors of Chaos, although I think the fantasy releases will slow down a lot in the wake of new 40k edition. Eh, they still have a couple of legitimate gripes. That army is very high-execution and really needs to be played by a player that has mastered the art of calculated risks (sacrifice one unit so that your enemy is out of position to direct offense against 2 others, apply overwhelming force to one spot, that sort of thing), and even then it has some matchups it just doesn't have much of a chance against (you brought 4 Mournfangs with the Dragonhide Banner and 2 Ironblasters against it? Pretty much an auto-loss - the rest of the army just makes it that much worse). These are the most efficient units they have access to, but none of them can truly be classified as efficient in the overall sense (except maybe Tree Kin), so a new book would really help them out a lot. Plus, Eternal Guard need new models, Tree Kin and Treemen could use new models IMO, and Elf players really do need a better Great Eagle model. I think that part of the beauty of woodies is that you must be good to play them.(that's just me, I understand its not exactly a plus point for most peeps) There's a problem with your ogres assessment...I only have 1 ironbaster and have yet to use it. Tree kin wont get new models next release, finecrap minis wont be updated for a long time, the eternal guard can be downgraded to failcast without a new book and they can use the HE eagle. See set for life. -------------------- You are guilty! The punishment is death for all who live.

I don't believe this is true at all. Finecast moulds are cheap and have a very limited life-time, they get replaced all the time. I think one of the tyranids just released had a finecast model already. -------------------- Eight Chicky Bits, is that a Chicky Byte?
