Realised this will be an issue, so I'd like us to agree on one or the other and stick with it. Do we use American English, with it's extra Z's, or do we use British English, with it's extra U's?

British English because it is more widely spoken in the world and it is the original way the language was spelt.

There should be a happy medium in between where we just write in standard, proper english. Although it does sort of depend on who our editors are.

"right"? The irony kills me...

I believe this thread is to help us define what proper English is.

Really...I don't mind the direction we choose. As a Canadian, I technically use British English, but obviously deal with a lot of American English.

This decision only matters really on the level of a choice, since worst case, the editors will correct to one or the other.

So...if we go with Her Majesty's English....do we have to use words like "git"?

How about just using the version of English that we are personally familiar with - it would actually be interesting to see the different way people write?

I prefer british english although I live in america. It pisses me off to that whenever I spell armour or colour it shows up as spelt wrong when I spell it like that without thinking about it.

I volunteered for proofreading, so I think I should chime in here...
I can say that I'm very good at picking up on badd shpelling, but I'm not great in differing between American and British. I prefer British, but I guess I have some Americanisms in my language. mellow.gif

British please biggrin.gif

I'm not fussed either way to be honest - as long as I can read it. Any submissions I make to the magasine will be in British English though.

I honestly don't think it matters a hell of a lot - the differences are subtle and I doubt they will affect the legibility of the articles. So long as the editors pick up on actual spelling mistakes and grammar, and ensure an article is legible, then we shouldn't have too many problems.

The term 'British English' offends me. Its called English. Like what we speak here in England tongue.gif
And, 'American English' was just something made up by microsoft wink.gif

Tbh, it doesnt matter which. Just let the article writers write in whichever is natural to them. Post people are fine with reading both.

And now, I must be off, I have a game of croquet with some rather splendid fellows. Toodle pip!

Agreed - anyone writing should write in whatever language comes naturally to them. It would probably cause some proofreading problems, but the logical thing therefore would be to have everyone mark down which they have used, and then submit american english articles to american proofreaders, and british english articles to us far more cultured proofreaders.
