Swedes not living in the sticks doesn't really need a drivers license. I was 32 when I got mine. Got it for work, still don't need it.

I know, I know. Just teasing. Still comes as a bit of shock though. I'm so used to "took the test on my 18th birthday" to be the standard. In fact if you don't people start wondering what's wrong with you.

Almost unheard of, I had to check what happens if you don't complete the final stage within 2 years of getting the probational license. Nobody knew. So had to get on the last stage theoretical course ASAP. Was in February IIRC and I was 20 (license would have expired March). Was the oldest person there besides the teacher.

When my younger brother, rather uninterested, took his license mom called the driving school and they asked: so when does he turn 17 (the age when you can start the learners driving, she was almost embarrassed to have to explain he had already been 18 for quite some time.
In fact he was also running out of time on his probational license. But he cheated the system and took his temporary license and got a Swedish one instead. Says something about the system that he got a full valid Swedish license without actually completing the requirements back home. I had to pay 200e for those measly couple of classes and 30min driving instruction.

Most importantly though, without the drivers license how do you prove your age and identification? Even my mother, who probably has never driven since she got her license decades ago use it as ID. In fact she even goes to the doctor to get the check-up so she's allowed to keep the license.

I have had no interest in a license so I use a proof of age card, costs a few bucks but its good.

Some of us in the UK call the provisional (i.e. learners) licence 'the drinking licence' as it is often taken out with no intention of learning to drive.

The provisional licence is a sickly green instead of the sexy salmon pink of the full license so everyone can easily see how much of a loser you are tongue.gif

That hasn't been the standard here for a long time. I don't think any of my friend's took their drivers license at 18. Ten years later only maybe half of them had it. It's very expensive and of a limited use when you live in a big city.

If you don't you can get a ID from a bank or the post.

Back from the monthly PhD afterwork beer night and am in good shape. Managed to get home on my bike and all. Even though there was really treacherous new snow on old ice conditions. Talk about hairy to roll down a hill and feel the tires bump against hard ice skidding every once in a while.

I saw a girl go over on her bike yesterday! She was coming downhill off a foot suspension bridge and it was a little icy so she put the brakes on. Unfortunately she put too much squeeze on the front brake as the wheel found a dry spot and WHHHEEE she went over the handle bars.

She was okay if a little embarrassed!

Colleague just defended his thesis and I'm back from the "karonka" and after-party. So **** drunk right now. And I totally have a newfound understanding for people who pee in bushes. Seriously, if I had only found some nice secluded spot when there was no passers by.

I don't think I've ever been so relieved to get home. Literally. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Peeing in bushes is WAY underrated. There should be bushes instead of urinals in mens toilets

Is it wrong that this account makes me miss being in Finland?
