Yet another terrain piece with skulls....
Way to go, G.W. On the other hand, that chunky rhinoish thing with the howda has a lot of potential. -------------------- "Fear me mortals, for I am the Anointed, the Favoured Son of Chaos, the Scourge of the World. First thought: How do we get that thing for (what I assume is) the Watcher-in-the-Water and that abysmmal looking thing for a Jabberslythe?
Second thought: I'd buy more GW terrain if there weren't those stupid skulls all over everything. |

No kidding! I for one am so darn sick of their crappy skulls crapifying everything they release!
Their fugly Ghorgon would be passable if not for the MILLIONS of skulls all over. And, for what it is worth, I am first and foremost a KHORNE player! I love skulls! But they've gotten so mental with them and put them on everything. Lame.... Very lame.... Sorry... I know this is my third post in this thread already, but I just can't let the skull thing go!
What on earth is G.W. thinking?!?! Do people actually buy all this fugly skull infested terrain? I mean, honestly? I can't be a minority in this. Those skull look really horrible. Giant skulls ruin nearly all their terrain pieces. Is there really enough guys out there clamoring for crappy looking skulls plastered on every building in the warhammer world? The biggest problem is that I fear skulls will start leaking into the model ranges themselves. Look at the Ghorgon for heaven's sake! And most of this "Skull Terrain" is supposed to based around buildings for the "goodly" races. It would look bad enough on Chaos pieces, but when the good guys start flaunting skulls about like badges of honour, well.... this is just insane. All these terrain pieces are such a joke! Rant over... for now... I cut all the skulls of and glue them to my car. Then I get my skeletor suit on and chase around blonde body builders as they leave the gym.
Or atleast I would if gas didnt cost so much |

Yes, people buy the terrain. It's fairly nice looking at a fairly decent price. I use the term people loosely. I'm thinking GW would sell more of it if it wasn't so damned "Warhammery". Which GW has decided equals MOAR SKULLZ! It's waaay to late for the skulls on models. Have you checked the 7th ed Empire soldiers? Someone made the comment there are more skulls on them than on Chaos Warriors. I'm not sure it's quite so, but darned close. -------------------- |

The only terrain kit I've found worthwhile from G.W. is the Ruins of Osgiliath sets. They are FANTASTIC. so much so that I bought three of them.
Everything they've made with Warhammer Fantasy in mind is just awful IMO. -------------------- "Fear me mortals, for I am the Anointed, the Favoured Son of Chaos, the Scourge of the World. The tower is ok - could work as a tower for my Empire army's Amethyst mage. However, I agree that the skull fetish has been taken a little too far. How about releasing some non-Empire themed terrain? What ever happened to the plain old barns and towers that actually looked functional?

When I saw the skull tower last night my [ten year old] daughter was looking over my shoulder and said: "Cool tower!" I assume that the skull thing is just fine with the kids.
Further, on the skulls, it's worth calming down a bit and taking a look at some classic works of art. They certainly had an obsession with skulls in artwork in earlier centuries, which might surprise some. See, for example, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_skull_symbolism If you consider that the Warhammer world draws a lot of inspiration from various periods in our history, particularly from before the Industrial Revolution, then the profusion of skulls is really not surprising. It is in keeping with the culture at the time, if exaggerated to make a point. The cultural experience of death back then was very different to our own. Now it is - thankfully - quite rare for a child to die in infancy, but a few hundred years ago and you find it a much more common occurrence, with death from various causes generally being more prominent. In particular, the recurrent plagues, starting from the Black Death of 1348, through to 1665 in London, would have created a certain obsession with death. The Warhammer world is one where the reality of continual war - against Beastmen, Orcs, Chaos and Skaven for the Empire in particular - would create a similar obsession with death. I'm sure that this is something that has come up in interviews with John Blanche and other GW artists in White Dwarf once or twice, but it wouldn't hurt for GW to educate their customers a bit more often about the historical reality that much of their fantasy is inspired from. So my message to you all is to chill out and embrace the skulls... or at least to understand that there is a pretty good reason for them. -------------------- Elucidate, Enumerate, Eviscerate
--- Apparently, I now have a blog for my miniatures. I can't promise any pictures of my Beastmen for a while though. |

All that is well and good, but as we all know, if something feels and looks tacky to us, no amount of real world explanations will make it better. All the reasons you give can apply to music, movies, tv shows etc. The justin beiber movie last year was keeping with the culture at the time. Doesn't make it any less wrong.
The excuse of it's realistic so you should be fine with it doesn't fly and I'm suprised to see it still being used. We have all seen minis that you could explain with a paragraph yet are still just not great. Even fluff for units that is perfectly plausable, but we still don't buy it. (varghiests and crypt horrors) They simply look too exaggerated and kiddy for a lot of people. And that's putting to one side the fact it's yet another empire tower. As oldfogey on TWF put it. I can't wait for them to release a giant skull embellished with tiny towers.
