Title: mrtn's Nurgling army
mrtn - August 18, 2009 08:22 AM (GMT)
When I bought a big Death Guard army recently I got about 200 nurglings in the deal. Since they are useless in a Death Guard army with the current rules, I thought to myself "Hey, these should be useable for something". After discussing this with some people (among them sandpeople and decker_cky) I think I'm going to use them as ghouls in a Vampire Counts army. Poisoned attacks and no musicians and standards sound about right. If I need a crypt ghast I can use the ghost-like guy to the right. I have a few from the same set, they're not GW, and I don't know who made them.
These guys are supposed to be finished, apart from base edges, varnish and static grass.

My plan is to buy the Collectors Chaos Sorcerer's and use them as vampires/necromancers.
grupax - August 18, 2009 08:40 AM (GMT)
dude those are cool nurglings :P
Beastlord Karankawa - August 18, 2009 01:30 PM (GMT)
That is another great idea for a "Nurgling" army!!
sandpeople - August 18, 2009 04:04 PM (GMT)
Great idea about using them as ghouls!
What will you use more than ghouls in your army?
TraitorKing - August 18, 2009 08:41 PM (GMT)
I'm going to say nothing more than 'I love it'.
BeastMum - August 18, 2009 10:31 PM (GMT)
They're very cool! I would like to see their teeth and eyes picked out a little more, but I like their guts and wounds, and the guy on the far right at the front climbing out of the grounds is great! :)
Apollo3 - August 19, 2009 02:07 AM (GMT)
ooOOoo very cool concept. Can't wait to see more.
daftgor - August 19, 2009 07:02 AM (GMT)
got any beasts of nurgle for varghulfs?
Migraine - August 19, 2009 07:27 AM (GMT)
Awesome :)
Care to enlighten us on what you'll use more? Will it be a nurgle army with count-as VC, or will it be a VC army with only nurglings as ghouls?

mrtn - August 22, 2009 09:33 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys (and the occasional Mum ;))!
@sandpeople: I don't really know, I've never played either with or against VC before, so I don't know the army very well.
@BeastMum: I'll see what I can do about that.
@daftgor: I was thinking maybe spawn for varghulf. Anyone know what base size they are?
@Migraine: I was thinking as much Nurgle as possible. Ideas that have been up is Warhounds as Dire Wolves, Warshrine as Corpse Cart, Chaos Knights as Blood Knights. We'll see when I learn a bit more about the army. ;)
Here is a test for zombie-nurglings. The picture isn't the best (middle of the night here). So we have Thraka green with either Sepia or Ogryn flesh, or Leviathan Purple and Ogryn flesh or Sepia. I'm not sure which of the purple one is which, they turned out pretty similar. Thoughts on which looks best?

Here are the first twenty. The need static grass, and a non-flash photo, but otherwise they're good.
Garganthor - August 22, 2009 09:54 PM (GMT)
Looks like it's gonna be an awesome sight, this army... Do you havea list as a first goal? Just so you know where to aim?
About the Nurgling Zombies (Zomblings/Nurgbies?) I say you should go for all kind of different colours, just keep them toned down, earthly colours... Should be alright, I think.
Do you have a need for a epic/warmaster Great Unclean One, you know the really small guy? 'cause, I have one if you want it...
EDIT: Oh, and I also have the nurglings that came with the old palanquin...could be used as something nice, I'm sure...

If you want them they're yours...
mrtn - August 23, 2009 04:25 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the offer mate. Those palanquin bearers would be sweet to pull a corpse cart / warshrine.
I think I want to concentrate on one painting scheme.
Here are better pics of the finished nurglings.

v3n - August 23, 2009 05:43 PM (GMT)
I like them, the zombie nurgling idea is very original
Grarrzag - August 24, 2009 02:56 AM (GMT)
You should ahve random body parts on the ground to show they are rotting. :D Nice stuff so far!
lagge - August 24, 2009 06:03 AM (GMT)
The idea is awsome. Why didnt I think of this before :P. The minis look awsome so far. keep up the good work!
Beastlord Karankawa - August 24, 2009 12:21 PM (GMT)
Great unit thus far - but why not have more of them mounted on 40mm bases? Much more utility that way (though I suppose you could work up a 40mm movement tray and put 4 on it)?

Ohhhh! Those Palanquin nurglings could make a neat corpse cart.
mrtn, those nurglings are looking great. The fleshy ones came out really nicely.
bonegnasher - August 25, 2009 07:29 AM (GMT)
As I'm painting up a VC army right now (assembling and scraping mold lines I should say) I think your use of those models is brilliant...my poor fingers and eyes wish I had thought of that...
Exeter - August 25, 2009 02:18 PM (GMT)
Looking good. Nurglings (all of them) are one of my favourite warhammer models.
That green rim on the movement tray is atrocious though! Gah, it burns my eyes!!
How long is it taking you to paint a single nurgling? Also, what colours are you painting the earth on your bases?
mrtn - August 25, 2009 05:11 PM (GMT)
@v3n, Grarrzag and lagge: Thanks!
@Karankawa: Thanks. I already have a bunch of 40 mm bases painted by the earlier owner. They don't look as good as mine, if I say so myself, but they're done, so I'm focusing on these smaller bases.
@decker: Yeah, they could pull a chariot. :) Thanks.
@bonegnasher: Thank you.
@Exeter: Of course it's ugly. ;) They paint up very fast. In two days I've painted 30+ nurglings, plus varnishing and static grass, plus basing of 20 unpainted ones. I'm working on more than ten at the same time, while I usually only paint about five models.
The earth is Vallejo Earth, Devlan Mud, and drybrush of Bronzed Flesh. The edges are Calthan Brown.
Here's a few more nurglings:

And here's a whole bunch of zomblings I painted up, 27 of them! They're so fast to paint, especially if there's a cable break for your ISP, and you can't surf the internet for a day, and have to paint instead.

I ended up going with both the green + flesh and purple + sepia washes.
Thanks to BeastMum they even got some sloppy eyes. ;)
Mallekha the Overwhelmer - August 25, 2009 06:26 PM (GMT)
nice!
love the project, mrtn.
Sherlocko - August 25, 2009 07:02 PM (GMT)
Nice update. :) Love the colour scheme, it really shows the difference etween your ghoulgings. Donīt do too many of those just, zombies ainīt that good. :P
Kawazu - August 26, 2009 12:09 PM (GMT)
They look awesome mate! I already told you, the idea is great :)
mrtn - August 31, 2009 07:17 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys!
Here's another batch.

Sherlocko - August 31, 2009 07:19 PM (GMT)
Cool work man. But do explain the close up, because I have no idea what I am looking at. :P
mrtn - August 31, 2009 07:23 PM (GMT)
Thanks. ;)
It's a close up of the guy to the right in the first rank in the other pic. From behind, showing the weird apparatus on his back, with tubes going to his stomach and head.
decker_cky - August 31, 2009 08:32 PM (GMT)
Nice. How many are done total now?
mrtn - September 3, 2009 10:57 AM (GMT)
Thanks decker. I think these three bring the total model count of the army up to 70.
I finished three of the Collector's Chaos Sorcerers, and I'm very happy with them. They're based on 20 mm bases to be used as vampires.

I'm think I'm happy with the iridescent eyes on the fly-gas-mask, it's just a mix of VGC Glorious Gold and Dark Green.
Beastlord Karankawa - September 3, 2009 12:13 PM (GMT)
Nice work on those vampires (and your progress is impressive as well)!!
Kawazu - September 3, 2009 01:45 PM (GMT)
Here they are!
They look... putrid! :D
That means you did a great job, especially on those capes (the one in the center is my favourite).
What about adding some rust to the weapons?
mrtn - September 8, 2009 03:32 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys. :)
Here's my varghulf for the vampires. If you think it's similar to the spawn I just posted in the other thread, then that must be a coincidence. ;) It is on a 50 mm base, after all! Well, movement tray anyway...

Here are some new nurglings.

I've finished off some movement trays, These are looking better than bare cardboard and plastic. ;)
And here's an armyshot of the nurglings, including most of those trays:

Pretty good for a month's work, if I say so myself. :)
bonegnasher - September 8, 2009 05:13 PM (GMT)
Very very nice for a month! It always amazes me how nice movement trays and some simple basing makes an army look 100x better, just must be something in the way the human brain perceives things hollisticly.
When I had finished my Khorne army board and had my 95% painted army on it, 20 people were looking at it where I game and didn't even realize one of the Bloodcrushers was missing a rider...
Anyway I got about 250 real VC models to paint if you want to paint them (for free of course :ph43r: ) :)

Good job mate. The only thing I would say is that maybe that warrior's arm looks a bit out of place... isn't it?
But I do agree with bonegnasher, the trays add something to those -already cool- models :)
decker_cky - September 8, 2009 05:59 PM (GMT)
Love it. The army's looking really great. You might try some nurglings with a bit more yellow just so you have something linking that vargulf to the army.
Silenius - September 8, 2009 07:37 PM (GMT)
Will you bring it to any tournament in the near future?
Garganthor - September 12, 2009 02:29 PM (GMT)
Really cool, mate. The sorcerers/vampires are awesome (although, maybe something's missing on the weapons - maybe rust, as Kawasu). Great job - you really should be proud.
And I see the varghulf/spawn got the movement tray we were talking about. I think it's a great solution.
Any ideas of what to do next? I have been searching ebay for the stuff the evil grey monk stole, but no luck yet.
How much points do you have now?
And as Silenius implies, it would be nice seeing this thing on a tournament - I vote for QfA in Uppsala.
Beastlord Karankawa - September 12, 2009 03:34 PM (GMT)
Looks great, mrtn - what else dod you have planned for it?
mrtn - September 12, 2009 09:11 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys!
@bonegnasher: Actually, I realised it's more like 3 weeks, I started the thread August 18. :)
I definitely agree about basing. I'm a bit inspired by Harry on Warseer, he's been churning out armies like there's no tomorrow, and the basing definitely helps.
If you don't want your VC army I'd be more than happy to take them. ;)
@Kawazu: As I said on MSN the arm is from the spawn kit. And thanks.
@decker: Thanks mate. I might try that, if I want more zomblings. I've also thought about using my chaos warhounds as direwolves, and they're yellow.
@Silenius: I haven't planned anything. You and Garganthor will just have to force me. :)
@Garganthor: If I add ten dire wolves I have 1596 points, but that includes a lord. I also have 12 more ghoulings which should be finished soon.
@Beastlord Karankawa: Thanks. Apart from ~50 unpainted nurglings (and all the ones on 40 mm bases not painted by me) I don't really know. The idea of the army was to get it on the cheap and to use the nurglings I had lying around in droves. I'll have to see if I expand the army more, depends a bit on money, and if I actually like playing VC, I don't know that yet. ;)
jayemcb - September 13, 2009 12:44 AM (GMT)
You did all that in three weeks? Wow, I'm impressed! Plus it's not like you just speed painted, they are all painted well so good job!
