That can be easily done using a bit of CG. If a gradient is applied, and nothing more, it gives that sort of dead / blind / broken look, which works fine. Or what could be done is to use flat colours so as not to give a shine to them, i.e. make them not look as 'alive'

Its great (duh, I had that idea too).
I like his expression + hair, though you might want to make it a little less macho.
I don't want Hanako-chan to get beat up ;_;
Still, he could be sweeter than he looks.

Favorite main character design so far.

EDIT: Ok, NOW its my favourite. Less spikes is good for the eye---s
