Suggestions for the YCAP web site

What additions and changes would you like to suggest for the content and design of the YCAP web site?

Do you intend for the discussion forum to be used by the community at large or only for student use? If it is to be used by the community, it would be helpful to have a link dedicated to the discussion forum displayed on the home page. I had to cruise around for a while to find discussion forum under the student section.

Becky's got something there... I think where the link is in general is a little confusing. It might be worth just adding it to the links section, maybe not accessible from all over the site, but sub-headed underneath the Students section when active (does that come across well?).
Also, I think the links section should have a different background, or different colors for the links. They blend into the background too much, making them a little hard to read (how I love my old webmastering teacher for that...). The background for the site seems like a good idea, though. I can't think of something else that would suit the site at the moment

They are right about making this link easier to find but if we add it under the student section the general public may not understand that they are also welcome to join the disscusion. Should this link have it's own main title (under the sections of past and present)?

If the entire community is targeted, pehaps a "Kid's Page" to target younger children should be added to the site. That way language can be broken down to make it easy for children to learn but at the same time not make the rest of the site so broken down basic that the adults can still get their information like adults.
I also agree with possibly making the forum it's own link in a links section so that it is easier to find.

My suggestion on the design rather than content. The first impression for the web visitor is good appealing to eyes. Either for kids or adults, the page needs some more colors. I would say good to have solid simple and neutral color in background rather than images. It bother eyes sometimes. On the side of navigation menu better to put them in frame so they stay on the screen all the time. It reduce scrolling and clicking. Navigation menus are "like neverlost".

I think that the home page for this site should be a little more alive, some more pictures and links on the sides of the page will help; you can place pictures of the artifacts or the symbols found in freedmen's town. You can also create more specific links that covers more history and information about what was found in that town.
If you want to design something for kids on this website, you might want to add it as a link where you can say "entertainment for kids" for example and have different word games or math games going under that link. i found an examples of an educational game on:
