The Secondary Mutation is the mutation undergone by several mutant subjects, all around the world, at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The first known subject is the Beast (Hank McCoy)[1] and it's him who named the mutation[2].

On the reached subject, the mutation causes:

* the increase of his first powers or
* the appearance of new powers or
* the recovery of the disappeared powers.

The Secondary Mutation, like the release of the Extinction Gene, has been induced by the critical point reached by the world mutant population in 2001.

In MA it is possible for characters to have a secondary mutation, but its not always something to look forward to. The changes can effect a mutant greatly. Not every mutant is capable of having a secondary mutation.

Known Secondary Mutations:

Victor Vince- Caused him to be able to fully control his abilities and increased the power of all of them. Allowed him to redirect sound and light without first absorbing it. (Caused by the Dark Beast)

Virus- Gave him omega-level elemental powers to augment his current abilities. (Caused by a machine created by Virus)

Akio Grey- Gave him the ability to manipulate gravity and augmented his current powers, unlocking their full potential. (Unknown cause, possibly magically done)

Aston- Unlocked the full potential of his powers and made his body able to adapt to the strong electric currents. Made his body lose all cohesive states, making it a floating ball of energy. Unlocked possible omega-potential. (Side effect of the X-gene cure invented by Moria McTaggert)

Emma Frost- Gave her the ability to turn her body into a diamond-like structure that is nearly impervious to harm. (Triggered by Apocalypse's science when she first "joined" him) *Secondary Mutation lost*

Tai Sorn- Gave him omega-level powers and the ability to control nature itself. (Caused by Apocalypse)

Jason Summers- Gave him the power of empathy, as well as unlocking his latent telepathic and telekinetic powers (Cause by the Dark Phoenix)

Bobby Drake- Unlocked the omega-level potential of his powers and gave him Hydrokinesis (Cause by Mr. Sinister, fully achieved after witnessing the death of his finance at the hands of Deadpool during Black Sunday)

Hank McCoy- Augmented his super human traits as well as changed his appearance. (Caused by both Apocalypse and a side-effect of the X-gene cure)

James Everett - Given phantom like qualities in that he is able to move in and out of a physical state as well as hex things in hinder use. (Caused by Apocalypse)

Jeremy Shaw- Gave him adaptive powers. Allowing him to adapt to any situation that was needed. (Cause unknown) *Secondary Mutation lost due to a mysterious third mutation*

Kurt Wagner- Unlocked the full potential of his powers, allowing him to teleport others to him and to teleport himself far greater distances. (Caused by Alastair's magic)

Angel Taos- Unlocked the full range of her empathy powers. (Caused by the Dark Beast)

Rogue- The full extent of Rogue's mutation is unknown, but it seems to have given her a split personality of sorts and access to all of her powers. (Caused by Jeremy)
