Hmm... Well, the book never gave a specific pronunciation. (Yes, I checked the glossary.) I've always read it as sounding like "weird-uh" in my head. I'm almost positive they spoke it thus at least once in the movie, but I'll have to locate my Eragon DVD and watch it again to be certain. I'll let you know when I get the time to do the research, but it probably won't be until after tomorrow. Sorry I couldn't give you an instant answer. Maybe someone else will answer before I can, but if not I'll have a definite answer by this weekend.

Considering the Ancient Language is based on Old Norse, and that wyrda means 'fate' and (one of) their word(s) for 'fate' was 'wyrd,' which is generally (any language that was widely used prior to globalization was bound to have many separate dialects) pronounced like 'wurd,' I'd have to say 'Wurd-a' is the best bet. Then again, the Modern English 'weird' is directly derived from the Old Saxon 'wyrd' which does lead to some strange pronunciations of the term. Weird-a may indeed be the proper pronunciation.

In any case, I'd say it's probably a mistake to pronounce it as 'rye-duh.'

On another note, the odds of someone stealing your obscure nonsense name are incredibly low, and there is nothing you can do about it if they do. There is no sense in worrying about it. I used to, and ultimately, there wasn't ever any kind of reason for that. Worrying about little nonsense things like that is bad for your health overall, and kind of makes you look weird.

Yes, we know. Most (if not all) of those posts were made before it was ever announced that he intended to stretch the books into four. I don't think anyone will take your name, so no worries. At least not until the next book comes out anyway. We'll be kinda slow until then.
