Medicine Cat Apprentice Cerimony at Moonstone (Typed by Beowulf)
Med. Cat- "Warriors of StarClan, I present to you this apprentice. She/He has chosen the path of a medicine cat. Grant her/him your wisdom and insight so that she/he may understand your ways and heal her/his Clan in accordance with your will. Crouch down and touch your nose to the stone."
Apprentice Naming
Leader- “From this day forward, until s/he has earned his/her warrior name, this apprentice will be called -insert apprentice’s name here-, (‘in honor of...’ may be added here).”
The leader then continues to announce the apprentice’s mentor. “-insert mentor’s name here-, you are ready for your first/next apprentice. You will begin -insert apprentice’s name here- training. I expect you to pass all you learned from -insert the mentor’s mentor name here or ‘I’ in case leader taught the new mentor- to this young apprentice and share with him/her the skills you have learned“.
The mentor and apprentice then touch noses.
Warrior Naming
Leader- “I, -insert leader‘s name here-, leader of -insert clan name here-, call upon our warrior ancestors to look down on this/these (two or more) apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as warriors in their turn. -insert apprentice(s) name(s) here- do you promise to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your own lives?”
Apprentice(s)- “I do.”
Leader- “Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your warrior names: -insert old apprentice name here-, from this moment on you will be known as -insert new warrior name here-. StarClan honors your bravery and your strength and we welcome you as a full warrior of -insert clan name-.” Leader rests muzzle on new warrior’s head then warrior respectfully licks leader‘s shoulder.
Re-Naming
Leader- “Spirits of StarClan, you know every cat by name. I ask you now take away the name from the cat you see before you, for it no longer stands for what s/he is. By my authority as Clan leader, and with the approval of our warrior ancestors, I give this cat a new name. From this moment on s/he will be known as -insert new name-, -insert reason for name change-.” Leader rests muzzle on warrior’s head and the warrior licks leader’s shoulder respectfully. Then Clan cheers his/her new name.
Deputy Naming
Leader- “I say these words before the body of -insert dead deputies name here-, so that his spirit may hear and approve my choice. (Insert reason here but is optional.) -insert new deputy’s name here- will be the new deputy of -insert clan name here-.”
New Deputy will make some sort of promise to his/her clan now saying they will try their best, are honored to accept the position, etc.
Leader Naming
The deputy sleeps at Moonstone. This is his/her dream. It will be at Fourtrees. The cats of StarClan surround him/her and the nine cats that will give him/her nine lives are closest. Intense feeling accompanies each life as it is given, whether it is pain or warmth. During ceremony, the new leader and the one giving a life might exchange a few words plus what they are required to say but only a few, usually a sentence or less. Sometimes it’s just a look on one’s face.
One voice of every cat the new leader has known- “Welcome, -insert deputy’s name here-. Are you ready to receive your nine lives?”
Deputy- “Yes, I’m ready.”
First cat approaches and touches noses. The contact is like the hottest fire and coldest ice but they can’t move.
First cat- “With this life I give you courage. Use it well in defense of your Clan.” As this life is given, new leader feels the rush and pain of that cats life. First cat joins crowd again.
Second cat touches noses and says- “With this life I give you justice. Use it well as you judge the actions of others.” As the life is given, the new leader feels rush of battles and hunting. Second cat joins crowd again.
Third cat touches noses and says- “With this life I give you to what you know to be right. Use it well to guide your clan in times of trouble.” As this life is given, new leader feels the rush and pain of that cats life. Third cat joins crowd again.
Fourth cat touches noses and says- “With this life I give you tireless energy. Use it well to carry out the duties of a leader.” As this life is given, the new leader feels as if s/he is sprinting without tiring and the joy of speed. Fourth cat joins crowd again.
Fifth cat touches noses and says- “With this life I give you protection. Use ti well to care for your Clan as a mother cares for her kits.” As this life is given, the leader feels the ferocity of defending those weaker that a mother would feel.
Sixth cat touches noses and says- “With this life I give you mentoring. Use it well to train the young cats of your Clan.” As this life is given, new leader feels the rush and pain of that cats life. Sixth cat joins crowd again.
Seventh cat touches noses and says- “With this life I give you compassion. Use it well for the elders of your clan, and the sick, and all those weaker than you.” As this life is given, new leader feels the rush and pain of that cats life. Seventh cat joins crowd again.
Eighth cat touches noses and says- “With this life I give you love. Use it well for all the cats in your care.” A this life is given, the new leader feels only the warmth and security of love. Eighth cat joins crowd again.
Ninth cat approaches and says- “Welcome, -insert new leader’s name here-, (‘my apprentice, my daughter/son, etc.’ may be added here), my warrior and my deputy. I always knew you would be a great leader.”
Leader touches new leader’s nose. “With this life I give you nobility and certainty and faith. Use it well as you lead your Clan in the ways of StarClan and the warrior code.” As this life is given, new leader feels the rush and pain of that cats life.
Leader steps back, other eight cats step forward and new leader stands up.
Leader- “I hail you by your new name, -insert new name with ‘star’ in place of later half of new leader’s name-. Your old life is no more. You have received the nine lives of a leader, and StarClan grants to you the guardian ship of -insert clan name here-. Defend it well; care for young and old, honor your ancestors and the traditions of the warrior code; live each life with pride and dignity.
StarClan cheers new leader’s name as if s/he is a new warrior.
Then a warning may be given or the dream may end.
Elder Naming
Leader- “-insert cat joining elder’s name here-, is it your wish to give up the name of warrior and go to join the elders?”
New elder- “It is.”
Leader- “Your Clan honors you and all the service you have given us. I call upon StarClan to give to you many seasons of rest.” Leader rests tail on elder’s shoulders and elder bows his/her head then sits with elders. Some of Clan chants name as if they were a new warrior.
Clan Cat's Death
Each of the able clan will go up to the dead cat’s body that lies in the center of camp to share tongues for the last time. They groom his/her fur and quietly say thanks to them. Those that were closest to the dead cat sit by their side till the next dawn then the elders bury the body in the clan’s graveyard. Usually those closest help.
Leader's Death
Med cat- “-insert leader’s name here- was a noble leader. Let us give thanks to StarClan for his/her life. S/he was dedicated to his/her Clan, and his/her memory will never fade from the forest. Now we commend his/her spirit to StarClan; may s/he watch over us in death as s/he always did in life."
Med. Cat Apprentice Naming at Clan
So far we don’t know what exactly happens at the Moonstone for the new medicine cat apprentices so this is what happens at camp.
Leader- “-insert apprentice’s name here-, do you accept the post of apprenticeship to -insert med cat‘s name-?”
Apprentice/warrior becoming med. cat apprentice- “Yes, -insert leader’s name-.”
Leader- “Then at the half moon you must travel to Mothermouth to be accepted by StarClan before the other medicine cats. The good wishes of all -insert clan name here- go with you.” Then med cat touches noses with apprentice med. cat.
Med. Cat Warrior naming
Med. Cat Mentor- I, -insert Med. Cat name-, medicine cat of -inert clan name-, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. S/he has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat, and with your help s/he will serve her clan for many moons. -insert med. cat apprentice name-, do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from rivalry between clan and clan, and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of you life?"”
Med. cat apprentice- “I do.”
Med. Cat Mentor- “Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your true name as a medicine cat. -insert med. cat apprentice name-, from this moment you will be known as -insert med. cat apprentice's new name-. StarClan honors your courage and your faith.” Then med cat rest muzzle on new med. cat's head. Then new med. cat licks their mentor's shoulder. Other cats there call their name like a new warrior.
