Title: Help! Stuck in Rigel Aurelius Arena!

roach - April 11, 2006 02:04 AM (GMT)
I was competing in the arena, and the wrecked hulk of one of my many defeated enemies seems to have piled up next to the main station. The result of this is that I can't dock at the station to claim my reward, because the game automatically docks me with the derelict ship. I also can't leave the arena until I've collected my reward! Am I doomed to sit here until I run out of fuel? Is there some way to "push" the wreck out of the way of the station, or to clear out all these wrecked ships? Seems like, if I'm going to be killing a ton of these things in the arena, there should be some way to clean the ice, so to speak. Some sort of space-zamboni...

EDIT: Okay, I tried ramming the walls until I ran out of fuel...

...AND I RESURRECTED RIGHT INSIDE THE ARENA AGAIN!!!

I loved this game, but this is the kind of bug that could cause me to never play again...

This happens to everybody. Wait for the answer of a more experienced player, some should know what you can do.

Just found this in the changelog for version 0.96:

QUOTE
The [D]ock command takes advantage of this. If the selected target is a station or wreck in docking range, the ship will dock with the target rather than any other object in range.

Maybe I should read the manual, next time...

Was that you, Roach?

I wonder why nobody used that name on here before...

Targeting roms are rare, unfortunately. I prefer to carry around an impact gun or missiles to shove the ships away. Maybe if there was some sort of garbage-collector ship, like a gaian processor without the ub3r guns and massive size.

ThorWarriorX - April 12, 2006 03:25 AM (GMT)
Or, perrhaps, with big guns but friendly.

SparcMan - April 13, 2006 04:13 AM (GMT)
I wonder how hard it would be for George to code in a friendly Gaian-like scavenger that works at the area. If you don't dock after a victory within like 20 seconds or so (enough time to grab what goodies you want), it pops out of the arena station and cleans up any wrecks cluttering up the arena. Once it the arena area is clear, it goes back to the arena station.

yeah. seems strange that there are no wrecks until you arrive and then they just stay there until you destroy them.

Ghengis - April 13, 2006 07:59 PM (GMT)
Maybe you should start being able to target friendlies (inc stations), and only need the ROM to target opponents?

the_holy_thom - April 13, 2006 09:32 PM (GMT)
ooh, nice idea! maybe only for docking purposes though - targeting allies can be useful if you want to take out some smugglers with an omni

ahh your stuck... well there is a few tricks I know of based on your situation....

1 - If you have a Nami Missile Launcher with KM100's fire a couple to destroy/remove the wreck....

2 - Forcabley move the wreck using an recoiless weapon firing at an angle to said ship wreck/target ; like playing pool... (becarefull outside near freindly station; in Arena No Fear - No Consequences...)

3- Like my 1st suggestion if you have a powerful weapon, cause you went ahead and backtracked to the arena... fire'em it might have enough kick to destry the wreck - PS Salvage it 1st...

- For future reference if your stuck on the wall hopefully there is something close enough to allow you to dock to.... just press "d" and hopefully it'll pull you in - Like the Black Hole we call LOVE.....

SparcMan - April 22, 2006 08:48 AM (GMT)
Yeah, George has been working on that issue for a while (wrecks making docking with arena stations difficult/impossible). His most recent upgrade to help with that and other issues in the fact that the targeting ROM allows you to dock with the station/wreck you have targeted if you're close enough. Hopefully the next version will handle cases like this where you have no targeting ROM and no WMD. Personally I think the following would work:

1. Open the arena wall as soon as you win the match (you get the Victory message) - This is probably the most simple to implement.
2. After you get a chance to loot your opponent, a mini-demolition craft comes out and clears any wreckage inside the arena before the next match will start. This would probably be very tricky to implement, but would make the most sense and be pretty cool.

Could be slightly annoying at times, as I like hiding behind wrecks then nipping out behind the enemy, but it's definately better than nothing.

How about you can contact the station with Q, and ask it to fire a short range wave which blows up the wreck? Obviously it has a short lifetime, and doesn't do it when you're still fighting.

if you can contact the station.. why not just have dock work via that interface as well?

or even just change D so that it brings up a list of things that can be docked to on screen rather than picking the closest one.
