I have been beta testing LOTRO, the new game due to come out in April. I am not a game player, though I love games I think I get too addicted to them so have stayed away. However, I could not resist the offer to beta test this game.

Now the NDA has been lifted I can talk about the game. Others on Tol Eressea are in the game too, possibly more than I knew about so feel free now to post your thoughts about it here.

I have some screen shots I am going to put on another thread you can look at. I will put the explanations there under the picture link.

I will post my observations later, right now I wanted to just start this thread.

History of the game for me.

Well, I knew about it for several years and thought maybe I might play it. Last spring an offer came out for testing but my PC was working so lousy that I couldn't take part. Finally I got a new PC for my business and got another offer for testing the game. So I joined up in September.

It has been a blast! There have been lots of changes in the game, much more polish and tinkering with the smaller things. One thing I like is the fact that Tolkien Enterprises has given the ok to the game and the game-maker (Turbine) have bought the rights. This ensures that much of the lore is present. It's not like other games where magic rules. There are healers, and loremasters who have songs or certain magics of ancient lore but not actually magic. There are hunters, captains, guardians and champions. I play a healer and a champion, two characters, Maglor and Laurefinde. I also play an orc named Shakatrogat in a special area devoted to combat between orcs, wargs and spiders, with the Free Peoples of Arda.

There are many things beyond the regular questing to make higher levels. Instruments are available that you can play. Maglor has a harp and a flute, Laurefinde has a Lute. Many musicians get together to play their instruments. There are emotes that make your character do things such as bow, cry, act mischievous, get angry, flirt, etc. Lots of fun. There is voice chat also and in the quests you are encouraged to group up into "fellowships" to work on the harder ones.

This game is available at a special Founders price, $49 bucks, and you get to play the last beta before release. You get to keep your character for the game after it's released. You also get an opportunity to subscribe monthly for $9.99 or for lifetime for $199.00.

It would be cool if other members of TE tried this game and we got in some roleplay there. We could create a kinship of Tol Eressea members too and help each other do the quests as well as roleplay in a living, breathing Middle Earth environment.

The Open Beta for LOTRO will start this Friday, March 30th, for those of you who have bought the Pre-order Founders game. Here is the official SITE to view the game (see at the bottom of this site page where the videos and screenshots are).

In game I will be Laurefinde and Makalaure, then also Cotumo on the Elendilmir server, which will be a roleplay server.

Related to the game:
The kinship I have decided to join are roleplayers using the unofficial roleplay server at LOTRO. There are many kinships, some roleplay, some hard gamers, some relaxed fun-timers and some needing ego boosts. I had two tries at kinships before choosing this one The Gathering of Laurelin

Please let me know if you intend to play this game by sending me a PM. It would be nice to have my friends from Tol Eressėa roleplay with me! My forum name is Laurėfindė and if you join, please use me as a referral. grin.gif

In game I will be Laurefinde (Loremaster), Makalaure (Minstrel) and Cotumo (Hunter).

You're talking only about the Elendilmir server, right?

I'll be Lalon (probably Guardian) and Irime (Minstrel), and another character or two. Probably a hobbit in there, maybe named Cornflower if the name isn't taken.

Lalon and Irime will probably show up on the Landroval server too.

I've been toying with the idea of creating a Maitimo (=Maedhros) character since Glor's playing Makalaure (=Maglor). I don't know if that would fly, though. Makalaure would probably start avoiding Maitimo because he would constantly ask, "Did you find the quest that gives out Silmarils yet?" 00000006.gif

I will put a character on Landroval but three or more will be on Elendilmir.

It would be cool to see you make a Maitimo character. Of course he will have to have red hair which may not be possible with the character build for elves and you will have to remove his right hand... Hmm - Makalaure and Maitimo can wreak havoc in game asking people to give them the silmarils! 00000025.gif

Red hair, maybe. No right hand, well, I think I'll need to talk to the people who design the game about that. 00000025.gif

"Oh no! Here come those weird elves who challenge everyone to PvP combat for the Silmarils!" elftongue.gif

(PvP=Player vs. player; people fighting each other rather than monsters. In other words, Kinslaying. blink.gif )

I might be getting this game myself, even though it is a pay-2-play game. I only have one question though...can you play as a hobbit?

yes you can play as a hobbit, human, dwarf or elf.

I am on the European servers so cannot meet up with the American gamers. I am an elf Lore master.
