As many writers know, a Thesaurus, a Dictionary and a good vocabulary will take you far! I put the Word a day link at the top of the page because I KNOW it will help me and it should help others, if they pay attention to it.

It is for this reason that I am starting this thread.

I would like to see posts on the day and have each member who wants to increase his or her vocabulary, use the word in one of their original sentences with a Tolkien flavor.

Does this sound like a good way to increase your vocabulary? Please join in daily! You may have to click on the prior day's word to see the new word, the script is not very good at automatically entering the new word, although it WILL be on the page it opens up.

Sept 20, 2005 - Glorfindel gazed down in curiousity as the large forest slug backed away from the spilled salt, before his very eyes the poor creature seemed to deliquesce into a frothing lump of blackness.

Sept 21, 2005 - Refusing to allow the victims of Gondolin to capitulate, Glorfindel took on the Balrog and Thorondor attacked the orcs that were guarding the Cristhorn Pass. Immured to the devil beast of Morgoth, as a last resort the elf stabbed his enemy through its heart, causing them both to fall into the chasm of Thorn Sir.

Sept 22, 2005 - Theoden's sword was busy destroying any orc who blocked his progress while Snowmane used the adventitious act to stomp the enemy into the stones of the field.

Sept 23, 2005 - Certain individuals believe that, due to Glorfindel's blond hair, he has a modicum of brain cells. tongue.gif

While college was certainly broadening her horizons, Hobbitness sometimes felt immured in the world of academic thinking. Therefore, she relied on Tol Eressea to keep her imagination from deliquescing into a fermenting stew of unused creativity! tongue.gif

Great one Hobbitness! BTW, I put your words in bold. biggrin.gif

When he was left lying flat on his back, scraped up and covered in dust, Faramir had to capitulate that Eowyn could indeed beat him in a horse race.

Why should I capitulate on this matter? I have far too many other things to do to immure myself in such trivial games as this.... wink.gif biggrin.gif

Because, Eldirn, the expansion of your vocabulary makes this exercise so useful that room is only left for a modicum of triviality! biggrin.gif

After reading Hall of Fire it seems than if Erestor had a modicum of sense he would clean up any perishable gimcracks in his closet before they got fetid.

I have plenty of gimcracks and none of them are fetid. Hey I like food too much to keep anything perishable in my closets. The only thing that might fetid is a couple of millenia old Orc gymsocks. biggrin.gif

The young man spoke with such an adamant tone to the beautiful girl’s father, that in the end the father consented to their marriage.

Elrond was adamant that the halcyon days of fall at Imladris not be banal to the hobbits who visited, so he asked Erestor to tell the tales of his gimcracks and had Glorfindel continue his jocund ways.

gimcrack: a showy but useless or worthless object.
banal: commonplace; trivial.
halcyon: peaceful; undisturbed; happy.
adamant: not susceptible to persuasion; unyielding.
jocund: light-hearted; mirthful.

At the beginning of the grand opening party the gracious Elven guests seemed to segue to puerile but hilarious acts of throwing food at each other, until at its nadir the throwable food became scarce. Mithrandir, with a few muttered words, caused the effulgence of his staff to remove all trace of what had transpired.

Come on we need more of you aspiring writers to use these words. Here are the words I missed lately:

segue: to proceed without interruption.
puerile: juvenile; childish.
nadir: the lowest point.
effulgence: the state of being bright and radiant.

Many of Haer's friends believe that he has an air of beneficence; he however, believes that this is a nostrum for his tenebrous moods.

Gah! Glorfindel put the onus of his laconic posting to the inchoate ability of his brain, which, though given sempiternal life through the beneficence of Iluvatar, is more filled with gewgaws than even the conurbation of men at the coronation of a great king. Abstemious as he is *cough*, he offers these palpable words in sincere apology, which upon re-reading this entire post, is closest he can come to a cant. biggrin.gif

onus: burden; also, blame; stigma.
laconic: using or marked by the use of a minimum of words.
inchoate: partly but not fully in existence or operation.
sempiternal: everlasting; eternal.
beneficence: the practice of doing good.
gewgaw: a trinket; a bauble.
conurbation: an aggregation or continuous network of urban communities.
abstemious: temperate; abstinent; refraining from indulgence.
palpable: plain; distinct; obvious.
cant: empty, solemn speech.

The problem with such things is that, if you string too many long-tailed words together, it sounds pompous and suspiciously like either a lawyer or a politician, neither of which we need in here, IMHO... wacko.gif
