A knock came at the door, halting conversation in the room. Andromeda glanced up quizzically, motioning for her daughter to sit back down with a single hand. Behind Tonks Alastor and Remus exchanged worried looks, both bringing out their wands as Andromeda got to her feet and made her way to the door. It wasn't often that she received visitors so late at night, and with her daughter and friends already over Andromeda wasn't sure who else could possibly show up to bother her. The natural line of thinking however was that it was danger on the other side.
"Mother, I don't think--" Tonks was cut off as her mother issued her a dangerous look.
Turning her attention back to the doorway in front of her Andromeda took a deep breath and pulled the door open, stepping back in surprise as a cloaked figure swept into the room, shutting the door behind her. Remus moved forward with his arm raised just as the cloaked figure unveiled themself to reveal none other than Narcissa Malfoy.
Blue eyes locked onto dark ones as the two former sisters studied each other warily. The rest of the room was frozen with shock as they tried to figure out what exactly was going on.
"Narcissa," stated Andromeda flatly.
"Andromeda," returned the blonde woman keeping her face serious.
"I don't believe this is a social call, so why don't you just tell me what the hell you're doing here at this time of night?"
Narcissa's jaw locked as she studied her sister. Her eyes lowered to the ground so none would see the tear coursing down her cheek. "I need your help."
"Help?" repeated Tonks jumping to her feet, making to move forward, only to be stopped as Remus reached out to keep her still. "Why should we help you?"
"My husband is in jail, and my son is missing. He is threatening to kill Draco if I don't do as he says! I can't lose my son--he's all I have left!" Narcissa raised her head high as if to prove she still had her pride, though tears were freely running down her cheeks now.
"And what would you like us to do?" demanded Alastor gruffly. "Waltz into Voldemort's hideout--wherever that may be--and demand he hand your son over?"
"Draco isn't with Voldemort! I don't know where my son is! He's been missing since...since June..." Narcissa broke down, dropping to the floor in a crumpled heap.
Andromeda closed her eyes before kneeling down to wrap her arms around the younger woman. "What is it you are supposed to do, Cissy?" she asked gently, using the old nickname that she hadn't dare spoken for so many years now.
"It's unspeakable. I can't do it," whispered Narcissa with the sound of a broken woman. "I just can't...but he will kill Draco...and Lucius...and me. I can't let that happen. I love my husband, and I love my son. I need them. I can't live without them."
Remus narrowed his eyes as he finally spoke up. "What is it you've been asked to do, Mrs. Malfoy?"
Narcissa looked up, horror evident in her own eyes. Her mouth moved but no words came out.
"Speak up," snapped Alastor. "We can't hear you."
"He wants...an heir."
The room became deathly silent, the only sound that could be heard was that of a clock in the background...
