The threat of the summer rains have turned into the promise in the fall. It rains almost all the time nowadays, and slowly the rain turns from warm to cold to freezing, and at the last snow begins to sink lower from the heights of the mountains into the valleys.

C’del... C’del... The nudge his dragon gave him woke him from his dreams. He scratched his head, it had been a good dream. One of the pretty girls from Southern Boll had played center stage. A goofy smile covered his face as he stretched awkwardly in his bed.

C’del I am sorry to have to interrupt your dreams, but I itch horribly. The awkward tone of the dragonet’s voice should have been the first thing he noticed. Rhadith’s voice was usually – well, monotone wouldn’t be the word to use but it gave away about as much of his emotions.

C’del reached over open the glow basket. The light from outside was enough to give the room shadows, but not enough to illuminate the dragons hide. Yawning he rubbed the sleep from his eyes before turning his attention to the dragonet. The patch of dry skin was easily visible on his smooth hide and C’del silently cursed himself for not noticing it earlier. “Why didn’t you say anything?” he asked the Rhadith while he rummaged through his cupboard for the oil.

It didn’t bother me that much, and you had other things on your mind. The smooth voice had returned, and he could once again barely note the dragon’s irritation. It had been like this for the past month. Whereas some of the other dragons couldn’t help but announce what they are feeling to the whole Weyr, Rhadith kept everything to himself. Perhaps if he had grown up around dragons he could have picked up some sort of patterns to the blue’s actions but he hadn’t, and it was hard to even notice whether his dragon was happy or upset. He hoped that time would allow him to grow into dragons way of thinking.

Pulling the lid off of the oil container he groaned. He had forgotten to get more oil again and the little that remained would be hard pressed to cover the dry spot. Shaking his head at his procrastination he smeared the contents over the worst of the dry spot.

That is much better. Rhadith almost cooed when he finished rubbing the oil in. I can wait till latter for a bath. C’del shook his head, Rhadith was always that way. He always put others first, even if it caused him discomfort.

~No Rhadith. I’ll go down to the kitchens to get some more oil and then we’ll give you a bath. You can wait out by the lake, the sun should be up a moment.~

Rhadith accompanied the boy along the halls of the barracks. Both of them trying not to wake their fellow weyrlings. They emerged into the first rays of light. The Weyr bowl was chilly, and quiet. IT was quite peaceful. The only living thing in sight was the watch dragon perched high on the heights.
