I don't really think it is necessary to breed any animal, there are many pets in shelters that need homes, and by breeding you are depriving those animals of homes. If people buy from the breeder, even a pet shop, they are less likely to adopt or rescue an animal.

Very true Lu.. Very true.. But if you breed and keep the babies then you aren't really doing anything bad...

But if you are breeding to get babies, isn't it the same? Think, how many babies would you have, probably about six right? And you could have gotten six hammies from a rescue. So before you breed, think how many pets you could save.

Also, if you are breeding you are going to need more cages, so off you go to the petshop, which is fine, but if you are breeding syrians, they have to all be kept apart, therefore you will need six more cages (in the six baby scenario). This is alot of money spent, alot of money going towards more pets to sell, which is more money for breeders, which is the motive for breeding.

Lu x

I do agree Lu that at the moment the pet population is fully grown. In the wild it is differnt because it's more natural but there are many pets our there now that need hopes.

When my new Cute Pets website is up I plan on starting a small campaign to help these homeless birds, dogs and cat and other animals. rolleyes.gif

I don't think I would breed my hamster because there are many at the pet shop and I don't think I could cope with the amount of babies a hamster would produce. unsure.gif

Its the same with breeding any animal though, hamsters, guineapigs, budgies, ponies... anything.

Plus there is a high risk that something will go wrong, and either or both the babies and mum might not make it.

I am not completly anti breeding, I just think you are taking an unnecessary risk with your pets lives.

Not to mention the pets in rescue centers. There is a reason they are all spayed and neutored.
