i'm an older WE player (first fantasy army before my skaven, started around ravening hordes) and I found myself at the start of this new edition with a dozen of the old metal dryad models, the ones on 15mm (orc-sized) bases.

i was now presented with a dilemma. I could either try to fit them on 10mm (man-sized) bases, which wasn't happening, or... convert them into treekin!

of course, there's a big difference between a model made for a 15mm base and one made for a 40mm base, so first I decided I would take two or three dryads and sort of "combine" them into a treekin, which fits with the new fluff as well.

What I've ended up doing on the two I've made so far (probably two or three more to go as well) is cutting the legs off one dryad and then gluing it on top of another, covering the juncture with green stuff sculpted to look (i hope) like wood. I also cut off/covered up the face from one of the dryads so there would only be one face sticking out - one of them has the "head" on top, one has the "head" around the midsection. Glue them to a 40mm base and you're all set!

it's not a particularly hard conversion, I'm not pro but I'm not exactly amateur either and this was fairly easy for me to do so I'm certain you can all do it, especially if you're old enough to have the metal dryads lying around. All I used was a hobby knife, green stuff, a pair of clippers, something to sculpt with, and superglue. I'll post pictures once all four are finished and I have them undercoated.

AAAAAA! Red Text!!

Anyway, I think thats a good idea on how to deal with the old dryads. But aren't the new Dryads also on orc sized bases?

sorry, the red text is an old habit from the underempire where we have dark backgrounds - it's actually easier to read than the grey. plus, it just adds a personal touch phrank.gif

i believe the new dryads are on man-sized bases but i could be mistaken - ive only really seen pics of em, my hobby store doesnt have a box of them in or anything. even if they were, though, i prefer most of my units to look somewhat similar if they're the same kind of unit, and the new and old dryads look nothing alike when it comes down to it. building two more today and undercoating them, then I just have to find my camera...

BTW, the new dryads are on 40mm bases.

And the conversion idea sounds good. Don't forget to sculpt loads of sprites onto the tree kin (remember the new fluff)

What he's trying to say is that you could have used them as they are. You mentiond squeezing them onto smaller bases, but that's not necessary because the new dryads are on orc sized bases as well.

Regarding base sizes - are you allowed put put a normal man-sized creature on an inch (*sigh* 25mm) base? For example, as my General I use a Warhammer Quest Wood Elf, which came with, and only really fits on, a 25mm base. Is there anything wrong with this?

You can't swap bases. You'll have to find a way to fit it on the smaller base. Base size is important because it determines who can fight who. Besides it would look ugly in a unit.

I don't put him in a unit, and besides, you can technically put a mounted character in an infantry unit...

Surely the base size is a disadvantage? Hence ok? Not to mention, the Branchwraith would come on a 25 mm base...
