A Plot: Teaspoon's "daughter" (a con artist who was friends with his actual daughter) comes to town, and with her partner (Ted Shackelford) they to try to steal a silver hair comb that Beatrice gave him before he left for Texas. The matching comb is in a bank in St Louis and the person with the match gets $10,000 that was left to Teaspoon.

B Plot: Ike & Amanda/Elizabeth & Cody Triangle

C Plot: Kid & Lou

Ike & Cody both try to impress Amanda/Elizabeth a couple of times. My favorite is the horse breaking scene. Cody tries to break a horse but fails, and Ike manages to. Cody whistles and the horse starts bucking again. Ike falls off, Kid, Buck & Cody go to help him and Ike & Cody fight.

She knows a little sign and is able to communicate with him and him her (if he goes slow). She asks him to dance and she gets confused of his response. Note: My translation in the quote is rough because he's at an angle.

Kid & Lou dance. Not the same kind of "dancing" they do in Requiem, but actual dancing. Kid feels bad watching her watch all the girls dressed up and asks her outside. When they finish dancing they kiss. This is not their first kiss.

Ike looks at Buck, then at Cody, bangs his drink down and walks away
C: Ike still sore at me?
B: He knows you didn't mean anything. He'll get over it.
C: I wish he'd hurry. It's bad enough when some one won't talk to you, but with him it's down right spooky.

Lou's watching all the girls dressed up dancing.
K: Come on Lou.
L: Huh?
K: Let's get some fresh air.


Cut to a group of girls talking, one goes to Buck:
Girl: Excuse me.
Buck: Sure
Girl: Is it true you've scalped lots of people?
Buck: Just one. (Looks at Ike) Him
Girl goes back to group and whispers


Outside with Kid & Lou
Kid takes off Lou's hat and not sure what to do with it, throws it on the ground.
K: (clears throat) May I have the pleasure of this dance?
L: (looks around) You may.
Both giggle as if not sure what to do and then start dancing. Cuts to Teaspoon finishing a dance with Amanda then cuts back to Lou & Kid. When dance is over, they kiss & Lou pulls away
L: Um, Ah. I think I better go (they kiss again)

Amanda goes up to Ike. She signs & speaks
A: Ike, (signs) Do you want to dance?
I: *Don't know, never learned*
A: (confused) I'm sorry?
I: (starts to sign again)
B: He doesn't know how to dance.
A: Well I can't think of a better time than now to learn.
(She teaches him how & Ike looks over at Cody who knows he's been beat. Song ends)
C: (walks over smiling) Well I know when I've been whipped.

T: (clears throat) What do you think of that boys? Well I never could say no to a good saloon or a pretty lady.

Water Dowsing/ Water Witching:
Dowsing is the action of a person--called the dowser--using a rod, stick or other device--called a dowsing rod, dowsing stick, doodlebug (when used to locate oil) or divining rod--to locate such things as underground water, hidden metal, buried treasure, oil, lost persons or golf balls, etc. Since dowsing is not based upon any known scientific or empirical laws or forces of nature, it should be considered a type of divination and an example of magical thinking. The dowser tries to locate objects by occult means.

Teaspoon's has a daughter named Elizabeth Kelly, her mother's name is Beatrice.

Teaspoon tells Amanda that the silver hair combs are made from a Silver Strike that he and Cyrus (Elizabeth's legal father) worked in the Santa Rita Mountains.

At the dance a young woman comes to talk to Buck.
Girl: Excuse me.
Buck: Sure
Girl: Is it true you've scalped lots of people?
Buck: Just one... (looks over at Ike stuffing cake in his mouth) HIM.
She goes back to her friends and they giggle, stupid girls.



Cody: Ike still sore at me?
Buck: He knows you didn't mean anything. He'll get over it.
Cody: I wish he'd hurry. It's bad enough when somebody won't talk to you, with him it's downright spooky.


Amanda O'Connor: "I know men. It's my business."

(This is my first recap, so hopefully it's okay....let me know if I'm not doing something right....also, there are a couple blank lines in the dialog....for the life of me I could not figure out what they were saying, so if anyone knows or has a copy of the script, please let me know and I will fix the dialog. The Keepsake

Fort Kearney, Nebraska (raining)

Crowded saloon, zoom in on a card game

Amanda: (dealing cards) 10…no help; 6 of clubs; possible flush; diamond lady…no help with a straight; Jack’s bet

Jack: $5

Player 1 folds

Player 1: I’m out

Lucas: 5

Player 2: 5 is it?

Player 3 (Jack): _______ are you in or not?

Player 2 places bet, Lucas makes a signal with his fingers to Amanda (the dealer)

Amanda: Last card gents

One of the players catches on to Amanda and Lucas cheating and stands up with his gun pointing at Amanda

Player 1: Hold it

Player 3 (Jack): What the hell are you doing?

Player 1: They’s cheatin’….him and the woman…I seen them

Amanda: Is that anyway to talk about a lady… luck ran against you that’s all… why don’t you put down the gun and I’ll buy you a drink?

Player 1: After I see the last cards you dealt him…. see if he fills his flush

We hear a gunshot, the player has been shot, Amanda pulls a smoking gun up from under the table

Amanda: I believe that it’s Jack’s bet

Jack (player 3) looks very nervous, Amanda and Lucas look at each other….a lady comes in from the rain looking for Amanda…the lady finds Amanda and whispers something to her

Amanda: Sorry gents

She gets up from the table and leaves with the lady

In Elizabeth’s hotel room we see Elizabeth sick in bed… Amanda and the lady come in

Amanda: Why did the doctor leave?

Lady: He was called away to deliver a baby

Amanda: Get him!

Lady: But, he said there was nothing he could….

Amanda: Get him…right now…you hear me? (the lady leaves)

Amanda: It’s alright Elizabeth (patting her forehead with a cloth…Lucas comes in the room)

Elizabeth: The letter…

Amanda: What?

Elizabeth: The letter I told you about

Amanda: Your mother’s letter?

Elizabeth: Yes, promise me you’ll get it to him

Amanda: Shhh, we’ll talk about it tomorrow

Lucas enters and starts going through Elizabeth’s bag

Amanda: What are you doing?....stop it Lucas, those are her things!

Lucas: She’s not going to need them anymore

He finds the letter

Amanda: Don’t you dare open that

Lucas pushes her aside

Elizabeth sees that he’s opening the letter

Elizabeth: No!

Amanda goes back to her side

Amanda: It’s alright Elizabeth

Lucas: Know anybody named ah…Teaspoon Hunter?

Amanda: No (rolling her eyes)

Lucas: Good, ‘cause he’s gonna make us very rich (laughing)

Teaspoon, Lou, Cody, and Jimmy are trying to find a place to dig a well….Teaspoon has a wishbone shaped stick claiming he can find water with it…

Cody: Teaspoon?

Teaspoon: (whispering) Quiet! You’re interrupting the flow

Cody: What flow?

Teaspoon: Water _________ perculating up through the ground, them’s what sets the stick a wiggling

The stick starts moving…Teaspoon gives it a funny look

Teaspoon: Oh, oh…here we go

The boys get ready with their shovels as Teaspoon starts moving, following the stick….the stick finally points down on the ground to the spot where water is…

Teaspoon: There she is boys…there’s a good stream about 20 feet under….careful you don’t drown

Jimmy: That’s a lot of digging if you ain’t right

Teaspoon: My kinfolk been witching for 6 generations, never dug a dry hole

The boys reluctantly start digging as Teaspoon lays down and takes a nap

Stagecoach comes to town…Amanda gets out

Man: Welcome to Sweetwater ma’am

Amanda: Thank you, sir (turns to the driver)

Amanda: Excuse me, do you know where I could find the pony express station?

The boys are still digging

Cody: It’s solid rock Teaspoon!

Teaspoon gets up from his nap and looks in the hole

Teaspoon: Ya, that’s a rock alright

Cody: I know it’s a rock…what’s it doing here, you said there’d be water

Teaspoon: Gotta get under it

Cody: Under it? You crazy…that rock probably goes clear through to China!

Lou: You can’t dig a well here!

Jimmy: I knew this was hogwash

Teaspoon: You did huh? Get out of there, give me that pick….(he starts digging) I don’t know how you boys hope to _________yourselves…you let a little rock destroy you…nothing in this life comes easy, a man’s gotta crawl and scrape just to keep his head up, that’s the trouble with you younguns today, got too soft…..what did I tell you, it ain’t so big…

A huge burst of water comes up from the hole and drenches the boys

Teaspoon: Ya! Haw! Get in here boys!

Everybody jumps in the hole yipping and hollering

Amanda is pretending to be Elizabeth (Teaspoon’s daughter)

Teaspoon and the boys walking back to the station after digging the well

Teaspoon: Well, you done a good days work and we got ourselves a genuine artisan well…first one of those I ever hit

Teaspoon stops as he sees a beautiful woman being dropped off in front of Emma’s house, Amanda looks over the dirty boys

Teaspoon: Ah, my oh my…(walks over to the lady)

Teaspoon: Can I help you miss? (tips his hat)

Amanda: I’m looking for Teaspoon Hunter (Teaspoon looks at boys all proud)

Teaspoon: (clears his throat) You found him….ah, sorry, we was digging a well, you caught us

Amanda: (smiling) I’ve come a long way to see you Mr. Hunter (Teaspoon looks back at the boys again)

Amanda: My name is Elizabeth Kelly

Teaspoon: Yes….

Amanda: I believe you knew my mother, Beatrice…

Teaspoon: (looks serious) Beatrice? (looks a little sad) ya, ah..I knew a Beatrice once…

Inside Emma’s house

Amanda: About 4 years ago, my mother took ill with pneumonia…she recovered, but she never did get her strength back, not like it was…she passed on in June

Teaspoon looks down

Emma: I’m sorry to hear that

Teaspoon: Your..ah…mother was a wonderful woman

Amanda: I think she knew it was coming, but she never complained…I was with her at the end

Teaspoon: Was your pa?

Amanda: No (sounding irritated)

Emma: Did you know him, Mr. Spoon?

Teaspoon: Ah, ya..we was…was partners for a time

Amanda: She told me about that…how he cheated you…I know it weighed on her

Teaspoon: What happened between me and Cyrus had nothing to do with your mother

Amanda: She gave me this the morning she died, it was real important to her that you get it. I promised to deliver it to you myself

Amanda hands Teaspoon a letter and he goes off by himself to read the letter

In Teaspoon’s room…he pulls a suitcase out from under his bed…he takes out a silver comb and holds it reminiscing

We see Buck, Amanda, & Ike walking out of the bunkhouse toward the stable

Amanda: The newspapers are full of stories about the pony express…everyone thinks you’re heroes

Buck: I don’t know about that

Amanda: Well you are…sounds awfully dangerous (looking at Ike)

They get to the corral and see a little donkey

Amanda: Oh, look…he’s so cute, what’s his name?

Buck: Sampson

Amanda: Come here Sampson…

The donkey doesn’t move until Ike whistles and then it runs right over to him

Amanda: Oh, he sure loves you!

Ike signs something

Buck: Ike says it’s only because he feeds him

Amanda taps Ike on the shoulder

Amanda: (while she’s signing) I know sign

Ike starts signing really fast

Amanda: Wait…Wait

Ike signs slower this time

Amanda: (while signing) I had an Indian friend

Ike smiles and signs again really fast

Amanda: Wait, wait, wait…it’s been a long time since I’ve done this

Buck: He said there’s a wild herd nearby if you’d like to go see them

Cody comes walking toward them

Cody: Where are your manners Ike? The lady had a long trip, maybe she’d like to rest….pleasure to meet you Miss Kelly, names William Cody (as he kisses her hand)

Amanda: Hello

Ike signs something to Cody

Cody: Maybe she don’t feel like chasing donkeys around, Ike

Amanda: I would like to see some of the country

Cody: I know just the place, pretty little pond surrounded by willows…be my honor

Teaspoon: Don’t you boys have work to do?

We see Teaspoon dressed in his finest suit walking toward them…tips his hat to Amanda. Cody & Buck are amused by Teaspoon’s behavior.

Teaspoon: I’ll take care of Elizabeth (takes Amanda’s arm)

Cody: Church ain’t til Sunday, Teaspoon

Teaspoon: Don’t sass me boy

Ike signs to Cody

Cody: I was just talking to her…what are you so riled about?

Ike walks off, nudging Cody as she goes

Cody: What’s eating him?

Buck: He likes her, best go easy on him

We hear Teaspoon reading the letter to Amanda

Teaspoon: I was devastated when Cyrus told me you were killed in Texas, that’s when I agreed to marry him….years later he told me the truth and bragged how he had cheated you out of your rightful share….(Amanda shakes her head and looks down) you placed your trust in him, just as I did….how mistaken we both were. I know that money can never repay what you are owed, but doing this has eased the burden on my heart. I pray you accept it.

Amanda: Accept what?

Teaspoon: Well, it seems your mother opened a bank account for me in St. Louis when Cyrus struck it rich. It says here I’m worth over $10,000.

Amanda: That’s wonderful…..you’re rich!

Teaspoon: Well, I can’t keep it…this money should be yours.

Amanda: No, don’t worry about that. I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, mother saw to it that I ad more than enough…..but, how will the people at the bank know that you’re really Teaspoon Hunter?

Teaspoon: Well, she took care of that too….before I left for Texas she made me take a keepsake to remember her by, it was one of a pair and she left the other with the bank manager….when I show him the keepsake, he’ll give me the money

Amanda: What is it?

Teaspoon: Something she knew I’d never part with

Amanda: A keepsake from my mother…I’d love to see it

Teaspoon: (pauses and stands up) Elizabeth, would you walk with me?

Teaspoon takes Amanda’s hand and leads her off Emma’s porch

Teaspoon: (walking with Amanda) Elizabeth, sometimes things ain’t always what they appear, nature can fool ya…mirages and such….you follow me?

Amanda: ah huh…..

Teaspoon: Well, this letter explains something like that….something I never even knew myself

Amanda: Knew what?

They stop walking and face each other

Teaspoon: Elizabeth, your mother and me was ah….well we were….but we ah……before she married Cyrus of course….oh dear…we kind of

Amanda: (interrupts) You loved each other?

Teaspoon: Yea, she was pretty like an angel….she was beautiful, soft, gentle….we loved each other a whole lot…the thing is....she says here that….your the living proof of that.

Amanda looks surprised as it sinks in

Amanda: You mean….

Teaspoon: I’m sorry, but Cyrus ain’t your pa

Teaspoon and Amanda hug

Amanda: Don’t be sorry (smiling as they hug)

Lucas rides into town with 2 other guys….they stop at the saloon…Lucas sees Sam sitting outside his office and heads toward him

Man: Ain’t you coming?

Lucas: Yea, I’ll be along directly (walks up to Sam) Marshal…

Sam looks him up and down

Sam: What can I do for you?

Lucas: Name’s Lucas Malone, I expect you’ve heard of me?

Sam: I expect I have….none of it good

Lucas: (laughs) Rumors fly, truth walks…a man of your reputation should know that Cain

Sam: Yea….what’s on your mind?

Lucas: Just came by to introduce myself. I’m an ordinary business man, just like anybody else. I run an honest game. I take when I win and I pay when I lose….if trouble comes my way, it won’t be my doing

Sam: Fair enough Malone…you play it that way, you won’t have any problems with me

Lucas: (nods) Good, buy you a drink?

Sam: Didn’t say I’d drink with you

Lucas laughs and walks back toward the saloon

Back at the bunkhouse….

Kid: When are they leaving for St. Louis?

Emma: Well, Mr. Spoon hasn’t decided yet

We see Lou and Cody sitting at the table, Kid sitting on a bunk, and Emma clearing dishes from the table.

Cody: I know one thing….he goes, he ain’t coming back

Lou: Sure he will

Cody: I don’t think so Lou

Lou: Why not?

Cody: Would you if you had $10,000 waiting for ya?

Lou: That don’t mean he’s staying there

Kid: He’s got Elizabeth to look after now

Cody: And a lady like that ain’t gonna be content living in Sweetwater

Lou: He’s got a job here….we need him…he can’t just walk out (getting upset)

Kid: What do you think Emma?

Emma: Well, Mr. Spoon’s worked hard all his life…now he has a chance for some comfort…and if he doesn’t come back, I’ll miss him terrible (we see Lou holding back tears) but I will understand

Lou: Well, I won’t!

Lou gets up and leaves the bunkhouse…Kid watches her leave

In town….Teaspoon and Amanda are walking down the street arm in arm

Teaspoon: Horace, good day

Horace: Teaspoon…howdy miss (tips his hat to Amanda)

Teaspoon and Amanda come up to a lady and little girl

Teaspoon: Well, Mrs. Barnes, good day to you

Mrs. Barnes: Good day Mr. Hunter

Teaspoon: Is this your daughter?

Mrs. Barnes: Yes, this is ______________

Teaspoon: Would you like a lollipop? (hands girl a lollipop)

Girl: Thank you sir

Teaspoon: Your welcome

Teaspoon and Amanda meet up with Sam in the street

Sam: Afternoon Teaspoon (looks at him funny for being so dressed up)

Teaspoon: Marshal, it’s my honor to introduce to you Miss Elizabeth Kelly from St. Louis

Sam: Well, my pleasure Miss Kelly

Amanda: Marshal

Teaspoon: Elizabeth….is my daughter

Sam looks shocked

Sam: Really….

Teaspoon: Yup

Sam: Well, ain’t that something…(nodding) well, Teaspoon’s gonna get a lot more respect around here once folks see you ma’am

Teaspoon hits Sam with his hat

In the saloon a man looks out the window and recognizes Amanda

Man: Well, I’ll be….Hanson, come look at this here…that’s Amanda O’Conner. She’s one fine woman, if you’ve got the price. This town may not be so bad after all. I think I’m gonna go pay my respects

Lucas grabs him by the collar

Lucas: You must be mistaken, that’s a respectable lady

Man: My…my mistake mister…

Lucas: You go near her and I’ll kill you…you understand?

The man nods as Lucas pushes him away

Teaspoon helps Amanda onto the buckboard and hands her a music box

Teaspoon: Are you sure you don’t want nothing else?

Amanda: It’s perfect, you didn’t have to do this

Teaspoon: (as he walks around the buckboard to his seat) Well, I’m just trying to make up for all the birthdays and Christmases that I missed

Teaspoon sits down next to Amanda as she opens the box and the music starts playing…they smile at each other

Amanda: You truly are a kind man

Amanda kisses Teaspoon on the cheek and Teaspoon smiles proudly…Amanda sees Lucas across the street…Teaspoon notices the look between them

Teaspoon: You know him?

Amanda: No, never saw him before

They drive off as Lucas watches

Teaspoon and Amanda are in the buckboard driving through the country

Teaspoon: This country was settled by dreamers and fools, don’t let nobody tell you different. Hell, I’ve been chasing dreams most of my life. There was even a time I was gonna get rich, that’s what me and your pa…..ah….me and Cyrus was partnered up for….prospecting…I got more gold in my teeth than I ever found in the mines

Amanda laughs

Amanda: I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone like you, Teaspoon

Teaspoon: Well, that’s cause I broke the mold when I come out

Amanda: It’s a shame…the world could use more romantics

Teaspoon: So, you think I’m a romantic, huh?

Amanda: Why else would a man hold on to a keepsake for over 20 years

Teaspoon: It was the only thing of hers I had….until now

Amanda: I’m curious…you never did tell me what it was

Teaspoon: A silver hair comb. I had a pair of them made special for her….silver come from a strike me and Cyrus worked in the Santa Rita Mountains. She cried when I give them to her (Teaspoon looks sad) then when I went to Texas she made me take one as a keepsake. I’ve had it with me ever since

Amanda: If you loved her so much, why didn’t you ever go back?

Teaspoon: I did, when I got there I heard they was married and you was born….hell, I just turned around and left

Amanda touches his hand….Teaspoon smiles and puts his arm around her

Back at the station Cody is trying to break a horse. Kid, Amanda, Ike, and Buck are standing near the fence watching

Kid: Hang on Cody!

Cody gets thrown off and the guys run over to him

Kid: Nice try, Billy

Cody: Fool animal will never be broke

Kid: Maybe Ike can (he waves Ike over)

Cody: It’s no use Ike, I’m telling ya….suit yourself

Ike gets on the horse, he looks at Amanda…. smiles and she smiles back at him

Buck: Ready?

Ike nods. Buck lets go of the reins and the horse starts bucking

Kid: Yay, Ike! (clapping)

Cody looks shocked as Ike breaks the horse

Buck: Go Ike! (clapping)

Amanda: Bravo (clapping)

Ike looks over at them smiling

Cody: It was easy after I tired him out, poor horse was begging for some rest

Kid: He did good Billy, admit it

Cody whistles loudly and the horse throws Ike. Kid and Buck run to Ike while Cody laughs. Ike goes after Cody and starts punching him. Kid and Buck break up the fight.

Cody: You crazy? What the hell’s wrong with you?

Ike signs angrily

Buck: He says you’re trying to make him look bad in front of her

Amanda looks like she feels bad that this was all about her

Cody: I wasn’t doing anything of the kind, it was an accident

Ike walks off and Buck follows

Cody: I wasn’t trying to make fun of ya, Ike!

Dance in town….shows everybody dancing

Jimmy and Cody walk into the dance….Tompkins stops them

Tompkins: (to Jimmy) Not so fast, son…..gotta leave your gun at the door…that’s the rules….wanna go in, hand it over

Jimmy reluctantly hands him the gun and Cody laughs

Tompkins: Have a good time

Cody: How’s it feel to be naked in public? (chuckling)

Jimmy pushes Cody

Cody sees a table full of food

Cody: (to Ike) My, my think I’ve died and gone to Heaven

Cody bites into a cookie and Ike walks off, still mad at Cody

Cody: (to Buck) Ike’s still sore at me?

Buck: He knows you didn’t mean anything, he’ll get over it

Teaspoon takes Amanda out on the dance floor and they have a beautiful dance together

Cody and Jimmy are eating and watching Teaspoon dance

Cody: Where’d he learn that?

Jimmy: I don’t know, he’s good though isn’t he? (they both smile)

Lou is standing at the side of the dance floor watching all the couples dance. Kid comes up to her.

Kid: (nudging her) Come on, Lou

Lou: Hmmm?

Kid: Let’s get some fresh air (he walks toward the door and she follows him)

Three girls are looking at Buck, one walks up to him

Girl: Excuse me

Buck: (smiles at her) Sure…

Girl: Is it true you’ve scalped lots of people?

Buck: (stops smiling) Just one…. (looks at Ike) Him

The girl looks horrified and goes back to her friends

Outside, Kid and Lou are next to the corral. Kid takes Lou’s hat off and throws it on the ground. Kid clears his throat and looks nervous.

Kid: May I have the pleasure of this dance?

Lou smiles, looks around to make sure nobody is watching and looks back at Kid

Lou: You may

They both nervously laugh, not sure what to do next…they start dancing, both too shy to look at each other for very long.

Inside the dance…Teaspoon and Amanda are finishing up their dance and everyone claps

Back outside….Kid leans in to kiss Lou….they kiss briefly and Lou pulls away

Lou: Um….I think I better go

Kid kisses her again, this time Lou doesn’t pull away and wraps her arms around his neck

Back inside the dance….Amanda walks up to Ike

Amanda: (signing) Ike, do you want to dance?

Ike signs something to her

Amanda: Sorry (she doesn’t understand him)

Buck comes up to them

Buck: He doesn’t know how to dance

Amanda: Well, I can’t think of a better time than now to learn (she takes his hand and leads him to the dance floor, she puts his arms around her)

Amanda: (counting to the music) 1,2,3….1,2,3….1,2….ah huh

Buck smiles as he watches them dance. Cody sees them dancing…smiles and walks over to them after the dance.

Cody: Well, I know when I’ve been whipped

Lucas looks at Amanda and motions to the door.

Amanda: Excuse me

Buck and Cody pat Ike on the back

Outside…

Amanda: I told you, he hasn’t decided yet

Lucas: Well, make him decide…tell him you have to get back to St. Louis…we’re wasting time here

Amanda: Alright…I’ll think of something

Lucas: Wait til you’re a days ride outside of Sweetwater, then we’ll kill him and get the comb

Amanda looks shocked at the thought of killing Teaspoon

Lucas: Well, smile darling…that keepsake’s gonna make you a rich woman

Lucas puts his hand on her cheek and she looks disgusted

Amanda: I better get back (she walks back to the dance)

As Lucas laughs, we see that Sam has been watching them

Back inside the dance, Teaspoon is loading up his plate with food

Sam: Teaspoon?

Teaspoon: Hmmm….(eating a piece of cake) Mmm, have a piece of Miss Devlin’s plum cake Sam, your mouth will thank you

Sam: I need to have a word with you (they walk to the side)

Teaspoon: (holds up the piece of cake) Want some?

Sam: No, thanks

Teaspoon: What’s the trouble?

Sam: There’s a fellow come to town, a gambler by the name of Lucas Malone…you ever heard of him?

Teaspoon: No, can’t say that I have

Sam: Elizabeth’s never mentioned him?

Teaspoon: What’s on your mind?

Sam: Well, I saw them talking outside a few minutes ago

Teaspoon: She’s a pretty girl, she attracts all sorts of men

Sam: They appeared mighty friendly, Teaspoon…it ain’t none of my business, but you ought to warn her about Malone, he ain’t nothing but trouble

Teaspoon: (looking around) He still here?

Sam: Yeah, he’s the one over there talking to Tompkin’s wife

Teaspoon sees that it’s the same man Amanda noticed in the street when they were in town buying the music box

Everyone is coming back from the dance…Emma & Teaspoon are dancing and singing

Emma: I can’t remember the last time I had such fun

Amanda: That’s more dancing than I’ve done in my whole life

Teaspoon and Emma kiss each other on the cheek

Emma: Good night Mr. Spoon

Teaspoon: Night Emma

Teaspoon turns to Amanda

Teaspoon: Could we…ah…talk a spell, you too tired?

Amanda: Of course not

Teaspoon: Good, let’s go to the porch

Amanda: Okay

They sit down on the porch swing

Teaspoon: I ain’t too good at this here fathering, I don’t pretend to know much about it

Amanda: You’re doing just fine

Teaspoon: I suppose the last thing you need is some stranger telling you how to live your life

Amanda takes Teaspoon’s hand

Amanda: You’re not a stranger, you’re my father

Teaspoon: Elizabeth, the greatest treasure a person has is there self-respect…you don’t have that, you don’t have nothing…you following me?

Amanda: (nods her head) Ah huh…..

Teaspoon: Good, cause there ain’t no self-respect in hanging out with the likes of Lucas Malone

Amanda lets go of Teaspoon’s hand and adjusts her shawl

Amanda: Who?

Teaspoon: Marshal Cain saw you with him at the dance

Amanda: (still adjusting her shawl) It’s possible, I spoke to a lot of men tonight

Teaspoon: The same man you was looking at in town the other day

Amanda: What if I was…I don’t know what you’re driving at?

Teaspoon: I’m not judging you Elizabeth. I got no right to do that, but there’s something wrong you ain’t telling me

Amanda gets up from the porch swing

Amanda: Alright…I’m sorry…you’re right, I do know Malone. I lied because I was scared…I was afraid if I told you the truth you’d turn me away

Teaspoon gets up from the porch swing

Teaspoon: I’d never do that….what happened?

Amanda looks away…hesitates

Amanda: Daddy….I mean Cyrus used to come into my room at night when my mother was sleeping, he’d do things to me. I tried to make him stop, but he was so much stronger than I was. I wanted to tell my mother the truth, but I felt ashamed….I felt dirty…I thought she wouldn’t even believe me…..so I…I ran away

Teaspoon: How’d you get tied in with Malone?

Amanda: I was sixteen…he took me in….he fed me…he bought me pretty clothes

Teaspoon: You mean he kept you

Amanda: Yes, I’m not proud of it, but I had no where else to turn…you sure weren’t there (turns and looks away)

Teaspoon: How could I be? I ….

Amanda: What do you know about my life? What I went through….how I had to live. You’re a man just like all the others, you use a woman and then you judge her by your own rules

Teaspoon: Elizabeth, that’s….just calm down

Amanda: All I want now is to settle someplace and start a new life. I’ll pack in the morning

Teaspoon: No, you won’t (he goes to her) Beatrice and I was foolish to part in the first place and you suffered for it, now you’re here with me and it’s gonna stay that way. That’s the way it’s gonna be….just like she wanted it

Teaspoon smiles and puts his arm around Amanda

We see Lou leaving on a run and Emma is outside her house

Emma: So long, Lou!

Rider: Hi Emma….I’m starved

Emma: I’ll fix you some hot cakes

Amanda comes out of Emma’s house

Amanda: Where’s Teaspoon?

Emma: Delivering supplies at the next station, what’s the matter?

Amanda shows Emma a letter

Amanda: I don’t understand this letter he wrote

Emma takes the letter and looks at it

Amanda: It says he doesn’t want the money, he’s giving it to me…all of it. We’re leaving for St. Louis tomorrow

Emma: It sounds like Mr. Spoon….what don’t you understand?

Emma hands the letter back to Amanda

Amanda: He couldn’t mean it, nobody gives away $10,000, nobody. Why would he do a thing like that?

Emma: You’re his daughter, that’s all he needs to know

Amanda: Teaspoon’s not like anyone I’ve ever known…it’s confusing me

Emma smiles and touches Amanda’s shoulder

Amanda: Can I borrow your wagon? I need to get off by myself to think

Emma: Absolutely, I’ll see iit’s hitched up

In the Sweetwater Hotel, Amanda is waiting for Lucas in his room

Lucas: What’s wrong?

Amanda: Nothing, I’ve got great news, Lucas

Lucas: You shouldn’t have come here, somebody might have seen you

Amanda: Don’t worry, I was careful

Lucas: What is it?

Amanda: That fool is going to give me the money….all of it…look at this letter he wrote

Lucas takes the letter and reads it

Amanda: Do you realize how easy that makes it? All we have to do is let Teaspoon go to the bank himself, he gets the money and gives it to me…..I give it to you.

Lucas: (sighs) You believe this?

Amanda nods her head, Lucas shakes his head no

Lucas: He’ll never do it, nobody gives up a fortune

Amanda: He will, I know hiim, that’s the kind of man he is

Lucas: Well then, you’re a bigger fool then he is

Amanda: Listen to me, Lucas. I know men, it’s my business….I know how they act. Teaspoon will give me the money, you don’t have to kill him

Lucas chuckles

Lucas: You going soft, Amanda? You all the sudden develop a conscious (Lucas laughs) I’d say it’s a little late for salvation

Amanda: Call it what you want, he’s a good man. Go ahead and rob him, but I just don’t want him killed

Lucas: Well, I ain’t leaving him to bring the law down on my so….

Amanda: Then I’ll give you my share

Lucas walks toward her, shocked at what he heard

Lucas: What are you up to? That old fool told you something, didn’t he?

Amanda: No!

Lucas smiles

Lucas: There’s more money and you’re holding out on me

Lucas slaps Amanda and she falls to the bed

Amanda: I’ll kill you for that

Lucas grabs her by the arms

Lucas: You ain’t playing with some tin ______ gambler here, you’re working for me. You can do exactly like I planned, or ________ see that precious daddy of yours (Lucas squeezes Amanda) You understand?

Amanda: Yes

Lucas throws Amanda down on the bed

Emma finds Amanda looking through Teaspoon’s belongings….Amanda finds the silver comb

Emma: What are you doing?

Amanda: Nothing, Emma. I was just tidying up

Emma: Don’t lie to me, I saw you

Amanda: It’s not what you think

Emma grabs the comb from Amanda

Emma: What kind of person are you? Why would you do this to Mr. Spoon? Why would you want to hurt him that way?

Amanda: I’m not trying to hurt him, I’m trying to save him

Teaspoon walks around the corner

Teaspoon: Save me from what?

Emma leaves the barn

Amanda: Elizabeth was already ill by the time she reached the hotel. She was too sick to go on, but she wouldn’t listen (sighs) She was set on finding you, it’s a miracle she made it to Fort Kearney. Her room was next to mine. I took to caring for her, we used to spend hours talking….that’s how I knew about Cyrus. Elizabeth lived the same kind of life, I guess that’s why I took to her. I never knew my own father, but the men my mother lived with weren’t much different than Cyrus. I’ve told you a lot of lies, Teaspoon, but I’m not lying about this. Elizabeth was a fine woman and I was proud to be her friend. I tried the best I could to help her….I’m so sorry

Amanda leaves the room, crying

Kid: Are you going to turn Amanda over to the Marshal?

Teaspoon: I don’t bear no grudge

Buck: Even though she tried to cheat you?

Jimmy: They would’ve killed you too

Teaspoon: That’s right, she could’ve let him….instead she tried to steal the comb so they wouldn’t. I know it don’t make sense, but I’ve gorwn fond of Amanda, facts don’t change that she cared for Elizabeth and she prayed over her. I feel as though I owe her, the only score I got to settle is with Malone.

Jimmy: I don’t know why we can’t just take on Malone directly

Teaspoon: Cause he ain’t stupid….cause he’s got two hired guns and the law on his side….cause you’d be either dead or in jail. We’ve got to force his hand, make him come to us so we can deal with him

Kid: What’s your plan?

Teaspoon: Well, the only way I know how to get a snake out of his hole….give him what he wants

Kid smiles at Teaspoon

In the Saloon, card game with Lucas and 3 other players

Player: Jacks over 9s

the other two players fold

Lucas: Congratulations

Player: It’s about damn time

Amanda and Teaspoon walk to the table

Lucas: You looking for somebody?

Teaspoon: Aint’ lookin no more, Malone

Two guys behind Lucas stand up, Lucas motions that it’s okay

Lucas: What can I do for you?

Teaspoon: I come to play

Lucas smirks, looks at Amanda and she nods

Lucas: You got a stake old man

Teaspoon puts the comb on the table

Lucas: (throws a coin on the table) Get a round on me, boys

The guys leave and Amanda & Teaspoon sit down

Lucas: What’s your pleasure?

Teaspoon: 5 card draw, 1 hand

Lucas: All or nothing, I like your style

Teaspoon: You win…you get the comb, the money…no trouble from me

Lucas: If I don’t

Teaspoon: You ride out of Sweetwater, either way Amanda’s out of it

Lucas: Playing for the lady’s honor (Teaspoon is not amused) Well now, it appears I owe you an apology darlin, but that’s what the man wants, let’s do it.

Lucas hands the deck of cards to Amanda, she starts shuffling

Lucas: She’s got the best hands in the territory

Amanda hands the deck to Lucas to cut, she deals the cards….both men look at their cards. Teaspoon nods to Lucas. Lucas and Amanda look at each other. Lucas puts down two cards tapping them with his middle and ring fingers. Amanda looks and gives him two cards. Lucas smirks. Teaspoon puts down one card and Amanda hands him one card

Lucas: (puts down his cards) Ace’s over 10s

The people watching the game are impressed

Teaspoon: (puts down his cards) Straight

Lucas looks angrily at Amanda

Lucas: Must be beginner’s luck

Lucas’s hired guns start to draw their guns

Lucas: (motions them not to draw the guns) No, no (laughs) A deal’s a deal. We best be packing up (he stands up to leave)

Lucas: (to Amanda) I look forward to seeing you again…real soon

Lucas and his two men leave, Teaspoon and Amanda smile at each other

Teaspoon: Drinks on me!

Everyone in saloon cheers

Lucas and men leave on their horses, Buck watches them and goes into saloon

Buck: They’re headed back to Emma’s like you said

Teaspoon: Good, keep an eye on Amanda

Amanda: I’m going with you

Teaspoon: No, you ain’t

Amanda: Teaspoon, you’re not my daddy…I wish you were, but you’re not. Now, I’ve got my own score to settle with Malone. I’ll get the buckboard. (she leaves the saloon)

Buck: I don’t know Teaspoon, sure you two ain’t related?

Teaspoon and Amanda are in the buckboard, both acting drunk and singing

Teaspoon: I know a good one….

Teaspoon starts singing “I Dream of Jeannie” and Amanda joins in…..Lucas and his two hired guns block the trail

Teaspoon: Get out of the way, all of you

The two men with Lucas draw their guns on Teaspoon and Amanda

Lucas: I don’t talk to dead men. You (to Amanda), I’m going to make you pay for this, you can bet on it! (to the 2 men) Get the comb

The two men go to Teaspoon pointing their guns at him

Lucas: I can make him suffer or I can make it quick….your call

Jimmy is hiding in the brush. Kid, Cody, and Ike are ready with their guns

Jimmy: No, it ain’t

Amanda pulls a gun out of her purse as Lucas’s men are looking at J,K,C,I…..Amanda fires at the man pointing the gun at Teaspoon and Jimmy shoots the other guy. Lucas rides off and Teaspoon jumps onto a horse and chases him. Lucas shoots at him, hits a branch and falls off his horse…he starts running. Teaspoon gets off his horse and follows Lucas. Lucas is looking for Teaspoon, he hears Teaspoon behind him cocking is gun

Teaspoon: You won’t be needing that. Just toss it aside nice and easy.

Lucas drops his gun

Lucas: You wouldn’t shoot me in the back, would you?

Teaspoon: I’m tempted, but I wouldn’t want you to miss out on 10 years of busting rock

Lucas pulls out a small gun from his coat

Lucas: Well, I appreciate the kindness

Lucas turns around shooting, Teaspoon shoots and Lucas is hit

Teaspoon: I was hoping you wouldn’t disappoint me

Teaspoon is loading Amanda’s suitcase on the stagecoach….Emma, Cody, Ike, Kid, Lou, and Jimmy are seeing her off….Teaspoon and Amanda smile at each other

Amanda: I’ll write to you when I get to St. Louis (Teaspoon nods) You better write back!

Teaspoon: Now, I ain’t too good at letter writing, the damn spelling gets me

Amanda: Well, then you’re just going to have to learn (smiling at each other)

Driver: Loading up, folks

Amanda turns to Emma

Amanda: Thank you (gives Emma a hug)

Emma: You take care now

Teaspoon takes the comb out looking at it

Amanda: I want all you boys to look after yourselves now

Amanda gives Cody a kiss on the cheek and gives Ike a kiss on his cheek

Amanda: (to Ike) Save me a dance (Ike nods)

Amanda turns back to Teaspoon

Teaspoon: I want you to take this with you (gives her the comb)

Amanda: (looks stunned and shakes her head no) I can’t!

Teaspoon: I’ll be writing the bank manager in St. Louis to give you the money

Amanda: No, it’s not right…I won’t

Teaspoon: I don’t want no argument, my mind is set. That money is there to help somebody, it ain’t gonna do me no good. I’ve got everything I need right here, if you take it….begin a fresh life, I’d consider it well spent.

Amanda hugs Teaspoon

Amanda: I’ll take it…but only if we’re partners

Teaspoon: Partners? Partners in what?

Amanda: I’ve always wanted to own a fancy saloon, something with class….$10,000 should buy us a pretty nice place. It will be an even split

Teaspoon looks happy & proud

Teaspoon: What do you think of that boys?

The riders are all smiling

Teaspoon: Well, I never could say no to a good saloon or a pretty lady

Teaspoon kisses Amanda’s hand and she smiles

Amanda: I’ll write ya, Teaspoon

Amanda gets into the stage and hands Teaspoon the music box

Amanda: Something to remember me by

Teaspoon takes the music box….the stage leaves as they touch hands….everybody waves. Teaspoon smiles and opens the music box and watches Amanda leave
