Ok so there's some debate on whether or not the riders worked on Sundays.

One person says:
QUOTE
that Sundays were no work days for any of the riders because Alexander Majors (was very religious)and made it a stipulation that no rides of any kind were done on Sundays. That's why the riders were given Bibles when they signed up for the PX....It is also why they had to sign a code of conduct too..

Another person says:
QUOTE
In light of this info and the DAYS it took between 10 days and later 8-9 days to go from St. Joe to Sacramento...there were no days off for Sunday's as previous suggested by another writer.

A 3rd person says:
QUOTE
Unless otherwise already on a run, no runs were scheduled to leave on a Sunday and riders were given the day off.

2 of the 3 have sources, one from visiting the Majors homestead, the other from a website. The 3rd can't remember where she got the information.

Since it was never stated on the show, I figured I'd bring it here to get other people's opinions or sources.

Hey Jen...got an answer back from the Alexander Majors historian/webmaster Jason Little this morning.....this is what he had to say about the the men he hired for his freight business and the PX riders having Sundays off:

Wendy,

Alexander Majors was known as the "Christian Frieghter". Each man received a bible when he went to work for Majors. And truly, the men and the animals both received a day of rest on Sunday, and Majors himself, I believe gave a fairly informal sermon. It is said that the animals often returned from the trail fatter than when they left! He allowed no cursing, carousing, or mistreatment of animals, and the men did, indeed, have to sign a code-of-conduct when they were in his employ; because of his codes, he attracted family-men type employees. He did write a book called "70 Years on the Frontier" but I do not know if he talks about his Christian beliefs in his book, but it is likely that he does. The book might be found online. As to where you might find other information on-line, I am not sure. The official website was still under construction when funding was cut, so unfortunately the full range of history that was planned for the site could not be completed. The trustee of the Majors House itself is Terry Chapman.

Regards,

JDL Studio
