I saw Apocalyptica live earlier this year. Great scott they were fucking awesome. They played their Master of Puppets cover, and since they didn't have a guest vocalist, the crowd did the vocals. A few thousand heavy metal die-hards packing out a tent, singing "Master! Master!" at the top of their lungs while those 4 incredible Chelloists play away.. it was more than a gig, it was a goddamn religious experience.
SOAD: Angry just to be angry?
| QUOTE | Life is a waterfall We drink from the river Then we turn around and put up our walls Swimming through the void We hear the word We lose ourselves But we find it all... Cause we are the ones that want to play Always want to go But you never want to stay And we are the ones that want to choose Always want to play But you never want to lose Aerials, in the sky When you lose small mind You free your life Aerials, so up high When you free your eyes eternal prize |
They've got issues with the establishment, certainly: Boom is the best example of that, since the lyrics are uniquely frank and direct, whereas everything else they write is mostly metaphor. But "angry just to be angry"? Dear god no. Everything they say has a point. KoRn are angry just to be angry. Davis has been bitching about the same bullshit for 5-6 albums now. I think you really need to look deeper with SOAD. Even if you dont like their music, which is fair enough, there's still a lot to respect them for.
And to be completely and utterly honest, at this point in my life I have exactly £5 to my name, but if I had a chance of making a point through my music, I wouldn't give that up for any amount of dollars. I feel strongly on that... money could never bring the kind of happiness that art does. Material possessions aren't shit compared to good music.

Dimmu Borgir is honestly not that different from something like Metallica or Judas Priest, but if you use screaming and double bass some people will freak out and not hear the rest.
(I don't like 'em anyway, but that's another subject)

You know, I am absolutely loving that the random discussions around here have managed to turn a thread about how Gavok "chuggs" the cock into a THREE PAGE RUNNING THREAD. I was also proud to learn, after a long weekend away from the computer, that the forum had its first ever troll. You're all grown up, Superdickery.

I'm just going to come flat out and say it, Dimmu Borgir scares me. The music.
Just not something I want for music I listen to.
Also, Hostile, I'm pretty sure that anybody who knows music won't hold it against anyone for NOT liking System, or Metallica. I'd imagine something in the reverse of that, really. Bizarro Music Critic might.

I'm way too old for this crowd. I stopped listening to music around '87. Sure, I worked in radio after that but it was just a job then, not for the enjoyment. Besides, tinitus makes it impossible to like hearing anything.

No, no, no. "Chuggs." Not chugs. I'm not sure what happens when that extra "g" is in there, but I'm betting it's special. |
Sounds like the old Robin Byrd commercial-- "The extra G is for extra Peee!"
And real men dig Tom Waits and Nick Cave.

Nick Cave i'll give you. Tom Waits however is so bad that it's funny.
The second series of Museum of Everything did a hilarious parody of him
"i once new a girl called jill, she was blind in one eye and, couldn't see out the other. She was working the streets, saving up buttons to send her half midget brother to engineering college in swanson missouri. Course, she didn't know that there weren't no way she could send her brother to engineering college even wit buttons, because there wasn't any. Buty as I say she was, blin in one eye and couldn't see out the other
that's nice, what do you want to eat
i'll just have cold black coffee with a slice of humble pie on the side
it's sheperd's pie today my love
I once new a sheperd, he tended a flock of the lost out of a brownstone bag in a half full pick up that he couldn't drive because he lost his eyes in 'nam"

Nick Cave has that Red Right Hand going for him. Back on the subject of Dimmu. I listened to them before I went on break, and I'll back down on my "no rhythm" charge. My memory is faulty, and I must have confused them with something else. There is a rhythm to their songs, even if I don't like it. I'd have to agree with the 'Not too far from Metallica just with double bass and..." statement, but then again, you're comparing them with Metallica, so... If anyone can find me a better cover band than Me First and the Gimme Gimmes I will be very surprised. One of the key things about them is that they play songs straight. When it comes to singing songs clearly meant for women to sing, their male vocalists don't go all 'Haha, we're singing a woman's song!" they keep it going just like it originally went. Of course, an exact replica doesn't make for a good cover, so they improvise in places. Will Shatner did the best version of Rocketman. I like it better than Elton John's. I admit that this shows a bad taste of music, but I don't care. If you do not like the musical stylings of Darth Vato there is something very odd with you. A band with a very diverse musical inspirations melds it all together for a great sound that borders on many genres.

Not all of System's music is angry. A good deal of it is, but not all of it.
I was disapointed with BYOB. It has some good sounding parts, but it was mostly screeching. Plus the lyrics were not as well written as SOAD's usual.
