There is still a hope that some better players will be called up just before the tournament starts. That happened last time as a few players earned a late release.

The squad is:

CANADA
GK- Adam Janssen | USA / Minnesota Stars
GK- Michal Misiewicz | CAN / FC Edmonton
GK- Simon Thomas | ENG / Huddersfield Town
D- Nana Attakora | USA / San Jose Earthquakes
D- Drew Beckie | USA / University of Denver
D- Sherif El-Masri | SIN / Courts Young Lions
D- Andrés Fresenga | URU / Racing Club de Montevideo
D- Tristan Grant | URU / Club Nacional
D- Doneil Henry | CAN / Toronto FC
D- Matt Stinson | CAN / Toronto FC
M- Bryce Alderson | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC
M- Kyle Bekker | USA / Boston College
M- Philippe Davies | Unattached / sans club
M- Mozesh Gyorio | USA / Sporting Kansas City
M- Evan James | CAN / Impact Montréal
M- Samuel Piette | FRA / FC Metz
M- Shaun Saiko | CAN / FC Edmonton
M- Russell Teibert | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC
F- Lucas Cavallini | URU / Club Nacional
F- Marcus Haber | SCO / St. Johnstone FC
F- Carl Haworth | CAN / Impact Montréal
F- Kyle Porter | CAN / FC Edmonton
F- Babayele Sodade | USA / Seattle Sounders

About half of my hoped-for starters are absent: Robert Stillo in goal, Ashtone Morgan of TFC, Adam Straith who started against Armenia, Ethan Gage from Reading, Joseph DiChiara from Soviet Wings or Randy Edwini-Bonsu from Eintracht Braunschweig.

No Jordan Santiago (Cardiff City) in goal, no Eddy Sidra, Olivier Lacoste-Lebuis, Gabe Gala, Alex Surprenant or Paris Nakajima-Farran (all defenders), no Oscar Cordon from TFC or Kevan Aleman (Real Valladolid). No Reda Agourram (though they took Haworth and Evan James from Montreal, so maybe that was by choice?).

If by some miracle we qualified, I think about six guys off of this roster would make the actual final team. But I have no idea what they’re doing. This team is so young and if we were actually serious about qualifying, why not call up a 22-year-old Gala or Surprenant instead of a 17-year-old. Gala played 17 MLS games. Surprenant starts for FC Edmonton and played a lot for the Impact (I think he even got some CCL experience). Maybe these Uruguay-based guys will be good (I’ve seen Cavallini and he’s all right).

On the flipside I’m apparently going to see about 10 playerrs I’ve only heard of and have never seen. So I am curious.

cheers,
hobbes

Wow if Canada has named a team with players even unknown to hobbes that says to me they are experimenting. Not exactly wise just ahead of Olympic qualifying.

hobbes, what country does El Masri play? SIN is not a national abbreviation I recognize nor is Courts Young Lions a club I have heard of before.

What you mean Yogi you don't know the nation of SIN? wink.gif

It is Singapore, although actually SIN and Singapore don't really seem to fit do they? Unless you consider caning to be a sin! tongue.gif

hobbes, is Piette the only 17 year old or are there others? Risky choosing players so young for this type of competition.

Sherif El-Masri plays in Singapore. Though I thought he was a forward. He and Thomas are only names to me. I know nothing about them. I'd never even heard of Fresenga or Haworth (who has just been released by Montreal).

Beckie was born in Regina and moved to Denver as a kid. James and Sodayde are both MLS drafted this year and I've never seen either. I've never seen Grant, Bekker or Gyorio either. I don't think Gyorio has made KC, but I'm not sure either. He's one I'm especially curious about.

I forgot about another player I was curious about for this cycle: Ethan Finley from Creighton (John I'm looking at you). He was born and raised in Wisconsin, but his Creighton bio claims his dad played hockey at UND. It seems that may not be true, but we still think his dad is Canadian. In any event, no idea if Finley has any interest in us or vice versa.

It's not a good sign when I know more about the U17s than I do about the U23s.

cheers,
hobbes

P.S. Alderson was the U17 captain. He's a big box-to-box mid. Very bright. Without wanting to compare their talents, he plays a bit like Mark Van Bommel. I do worry he isn't quick enough to be in the midfield as he gets older and may become a defender.

But Henry is only 18 and Cavallini, Stinson, Grant and Russ Teibert are all still 19 (or just turned 20). That's a young U23 team.

Apparently Randy Edwini-Bonsu is going to take part and that will make a rather large difference to our hopes. It's still not a great team, but having our first choice strike partnership there should help a lot.

I've head that Ashtone Morgan from TFC may be made available. I'm not sure if it's just a "for the semifinal" kind of deal or what, but that will help. with Morgan, Attakora, Henry and Stinson, our best back four are probably all TFC Academy grads. Hopefully in another four years the other academies will pay off as well.

Okay, scratch that. Morgan is now not coming. I'm guessing the win in LA for Toronto is the reason.

Canada beat T&T 1-0 today. I don't know much else at this point and Edwini-Bonsu is apparently on his way over.

These matches are all being televised up here, so I'm looking forward to watching. Even if I'm not expecting much good to come from them.

cheers,
hobbes

Looks from this that Canada had plenty of trouble getting many of these players released from their clubs, even a MLS based one like Ashtone Morgan. The US was pretty fortunate and/or negotiated well in order to get releases from many of the players it wanted to bring to qualifying so it appears it was Canada who was the most hurt by some clubs refusal to release players.

Here is Canada's final roster for Olympic qualifying:

1- GK- Adam Janssen | USA / Minnesota Stars
2- FB- Andrés Fresenga | URU / Racing Club de Montevideo
3- M- Russell Teibert | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC
4- CB- Nana Attakora |
5- CB- Doneil Henry | CAN / Toronto FC
6- M- Kyle Bekker | USA / Boston College
7- M- Bryce Alderson | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC
8- M- Samuel Piette | FRA / FC Metz
9- M- Shaun Saiko | CAN / FC Edmonton
10- F- Marcus Haber | SCO / St. Johnstone FC
11- M- Matt Stinson | CAN / Toronto FC
12- F- Babayele Sodade | USA / Seattle Sounders FC
13- F- Lucas Cavallini | URU / Club Nacional
14- M- Philippe Davies |
15- M- Sherif El-Masri | SIN / Courts Young Lions
16- M- Drew Beckie |
17- F- Carl Haworth | CAN / Impact Montréal
18- GK- Michal Misiewicz | CAN / FC Edmonton
19- F- Randy Edwini-Bonsu | GER / Eintracht Braunsweig
20- M- Evan James | CAN / Impact Montréal

I agree with the current consensus that we can't believe that they cut Kyle Porter and Mozesh Gyorio. Porter is a good flank player with pace. I thought Vancouver should have kept him (he was from their academy) and I thought he looked good in Edmonton's Voyageurs Cup games last year. I've never seen Gyorio, but if KC liked him, I was curious how he was. No one else really jumps out at me as being particularly attack-minded in our midfield.

Fonseca said he picked a young group for camp because he thought that the younger players had more talent. He conceded he could have used a bunch of 21 and 22 year olds and maybe had a better team, but he felt having a younger, more talented team was better for development.

cheers,
hobbes

Hobbes, I've never heard of Gyorio here in KC. He's not on the senior roster, could be buried somewhere on the reserve team, but my guess is that he was just here on trial.

My understanding was that Gyorio was in Florida with them on trial and came with them to KC and was in the running to fill the final roster spot before taking off to take part in Canada's camp almost two weeks ago. I was assuming he was coming back to KC to try to earn a roster spot (Vermes had spoken highly of him), but he may head back to NASL now?

An update: http://the11.ca/2012/03/26/gyorio-says-no-...ng-kansas-city/

And in other news, Mozzi Gyorio is blond? Not what I was expecting.
