QUOTE
Now it is time for these players to produce at the club level if they are going to have successful professional careers and eventually help the national team. And of all the players that most applies to Freddy Adu, who does all right with various national teams but now needs to establish himself as a viable professional player at the club level.

Amen to that. But he has a stubborn coach in Philadelphia in Peter Nowak who has not yet shown he is willing to give Adu the chance to become a starter with the club. Adu has to put that to the side and just produce when he gets a chance and make his coach take notice.

It was painful. Porter deserves some blame. I thought we were a bit fatigued and the keeper situation makes my head spin.

Mexico looked polished and confident. Canada played with cohesiveness and heart we expect from our lads.

In the end, the failure rests with this group of players. It will close doors for some and allow others, previously overlooked, to get a chance. That may be the blessing.

Some comments from Klinsmann, basically he backs Porter and would like to see him work with additional US teams in the future, he specifically named Diskerud and Corona for praise during Olympic qualifying and says the US needs to find ways to get more playing time for its 18-23 year old players.

Interesting that he should specifically point out Corona and Diskerud, as we have noted here the problem each face is the incredible depth the US has in central midfield but at somepoint if these two continue to receive playing time they will likely get a national team callup sometime soon. If not this May/June then likely next August or September.

There won't be any U23 team for another 4 years so what role would Porter have in the future for the US? Working as an assistant to Klinsmann? Coaching other US youth teams? The problem with the first is Porter still seems committed to remaining as Akron University coach. Hard to be an assistant national team coach while stll in that job. And the youth teams U20, U18 and U17 already have coaches.

Klinsmann was being diplomatic. He has to back Porter. Besides, what is the point of being openly critical of the guy when everyone who followed it can easily assess the situation?

Porter can coach. He can develop a team. He got schooled, however, in gamesmanship and tournament play strategy in the U23s.

Wonder if there is any truth the story making the rounds that several players had broken curfew during the tournament and Porter still played them (against Klinsmann's counsel)? Anybody else hear something similar?
