REYNA LET OUT OF CITEH CONTRACT
Longtime US captain Claudio Reyna has agreed to a mutual parting of the ways with Manchester City, clearing the way for him to discuss a deal to join MLS. Read the full story by following the link below: http://www.yanks-abroad.com/content.php?mode=news&id=2661 Personally, I would love to see Claudio play out his career in the MLS. comments? -------------------- Qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum

From what I understand, the deal with Red Baloney New Jersey has already been all but signed. They were waiting for negotiations with ManCity over the release to finish before dotting the t's and crossing the i's to bring him in.
Rumor has it that Claudio's wife is pregnant and wants to come home, which played a big part in the decision on both sides. With his outright release granted, there shouldn't be a transfer fee involved, which will save the PinkCows some money. The only real questions left are: 1) does he take up one of their DP slots; and 2) how long does he last on that FieldTurf crap. Details to follow, I'm sure. -------------------- I'm not just famous ... I'm INfamous

Good questions both. With MLS' rules who knows if Reyna will be their "Beckham" signing or not? And how long he'll last on the club's FieldTurf is a very good question. When was the last time Reyna had an injury free season? Why does the link JohnBuildr provided refer to Manchester City as Citeh? |

When healthy Reyna is still a good player and will be a good organizer for New York. But the question of whether he'll be their one Beckham signing is a good one. He'll need some forward to set up.

While being fully aware of both his age and injury history (and, I suppose, given those concerns, the luxury of not being a New York supporter) I think this is great. I've always been a big fan of Reyna's and I'm happy to finally be able to welcome him home to our domestic league. Re: the DP slot, I've seen reports flatly stating that he is filling one of NYRB's two and articles saying the opposite. My guess would be he is, but the news conference today should clear that up.
Not having been to Manchester I'm not sure if it's exaggerated for effect, but Man City is often referred to as 'Citeh' in a nod to how a person from Manchester would pronounce 'city', the way you sometimes see New York in print as Noo Yawk, as an aping of the local accent. -------------------- Anyone who can watch a film of Pelé dummying the goalkeeper in the Mexico World Cup or Muhammad Ali beating Foreman in Zaire or see Said Aouita breaking the world record for the ten thousand metres or whatever it was—anyone who can watch those things without tears in their eyes, without being moved in the same way as they are by a work of art is a philistine—there’s no other word for them.

MLSnet reports that Reyna is being signed under the designated player / Beckham rule.
http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ym...s_mls&fext=.jsp He should be a pretty good addition to the league, and the MetroBulls, if he stays healthy. Even though he will play for an enemy team, I hope he holds up more like a Preki than a John O'Brien. Barring New Jersey-like delays and red tape, he could be playing his home games on grass in a year. |

I've never seen Noo Yawk. Now, I've seen "nawlins" for New Orleans a few times...maybe it is a regional thing. |

I always liked watching Reyna play and hope he'll have an impact on MLS. Hopefully he'll avoid the O"Brien like injuries. Speaking of O"Brien his time at Chivas USA is over. It lasted what all of 45 minutes?
So if Reyna takes up the big money spot New York, as someone mentioned, needs a forward. The Spanish language press was reporting Agustin Delgado, Ecuador's center forward is interested in the club and vice versa but I believe he is still suspended by Ecuador's federation for involvement in a post game fight. -------------------- Esas son las leyendas de futbol mexicano,

Actually, only five minutes. http://chivas.usa.mlsnet.com/players/bio.j...tatType=current He's still on their roster. Has there been an official notice of his release? Did I miss it, or was it buried? -------------------- I'm not just famous ... I'm INfamous

The return of Reyna, the most successful US field player in Europe, is big news. But like others here have expressed you have to look at it cautiously considering his history of injuries.
5 minutes for O'Brien in 2006? I thought he only signed a one year contract for 2006 but maybe I'm mistaken. Hopefully our Chivas fan here Pique can give us more information. -------------------- |

Thanks for the explanation of the Citeh reference. English is not my first language so sometimes these types of references get by me.
Did John O'Brien even break a sweat playing for either Chivas USA or the US national team last year? Yet Arena chose him for the World Cup squad. Brilliant move eh? I'd think Arena will use Reyna with New York much like how he did with the national team. So that will require some active wingers and/or a withdrawn forward who can fill the space Reyna will allow between the midfield and the forwards. Any candidates already on the team for these roles? |

Thanks Dan for the correction. I guess I confused O"Brien's US national team play with his time at Chivas USA. As somebody said, he barely even broke a sweat with the two teams in 2006. I don't know if he's specifically been released by Chivas USA but I do know he signed a 1 year contract last year so is now out of contract. Perhaps Chivas USA still hold his rights within MLS but as far as I know he isn't currently part of the team. Then again they haven't yet started practice so maybe my comments are a bit too early.

Now that i think about it didn't New York acquire a designated player from Chivas USA in exchange for Guevara? If so then they had two DPs to use, one of which went to Reyna so that should still give them the chance to sign another big name player shouldn't it? I ask that ina question form because with MLS' rules one never knows!

Yes, they acquired the extra DP slot in the Guevara trade. However they still have the salary cap to contend with. Or maybe not, this is the League "Superclub" after all ... -------------------- I'm not just famous ... I'm INfamous

So I guess we can look forward to the U.S. having a decent central-midfielder again in about 20 years. -------------------- ... Ain't no pity in the Rose City ...
