Note that neither Jamaica nor Haiti qualified from the Caribbean. After an absence at the last Gold Cup Trinidad & Tobago are back.

Happy to read that Belize made it for the first time.

I'm pretty happy with our group. Given this is an "off year" Gold Cup (ie the year of the Hex), I think getting some tough games is going to help us. I don't expect to see Mexico or Panama at their best, but they should both still be hard. And Martinique is always tricky. I'd rather have a tough group and learn from it.

After having all of our matches in the east, I'm happy we're going to be in the west. It's good for our support and I'm sure a lot of Vancouver guys will make the short trip to Seattle. We're also planning a large trip to Denver. I suspect it won't be a big group going all the way to LA to see us play Martinique, but it's kind of tempting.

I feel for the U.S. What a crap group. You beat up on Belize and Cuba and then gear up for a tough game against Costa Rica. All while travelling from Portland to SLC and Hartford? I'm sure getting from SLC to Hartford won't be terribly simple either.

cheers,
hobbes

I'm booked up for Seattle and Denver. Ready to be a sliver of red in a sea of green (or is that black these days).

Anyone else going to any matches?

cheers,

This Central Connecticut native feels compelled to say that Hartford does have an airport, you know.

Vince, shall we meet at the same 7-Eleven before the CR match?

Oh I know Winslow. I like Hartford. And I know what it's like to fly from SLC. I was more thinking a dirth of direct flights. Or do the Yanks fly charter/private. It just seemed like a lot of travel in the first round for a host... Mexico (and us) have a much better schedule travel-wise.

cheers,
hobbes

Time to get this thread going with the Gold Cup starting tomorrow,

A reminder, here are the groups, with the top 2 from each going through along with the two best 3rd place teams. In other words you have to be pretty bad not to make the quarterfinals!

Group A: Mexico, Panama, Canada, Martinique

Group B: Honduras, El Salvador, Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti

Group C: U.S., Costa Rica, Belize, Cuba

Group A looks the most competitive to me. Group B should be pretty even too while Group C has 2 of the 3 best national teams in the region along with likely the 2 weakest teams in this tournament.

Mexico and Honduras should win Groups A and B with the other three teams in those groups pretty evenly matched in the dispute for 2nd place.

Group C may have 2 weak teams, as Sammy notes, but the US and Costa Rica are pretty well matched and those two nations should have a good battle to determine who wins the group. That could come down to goal difference based on how much each defeats Belice and Cuba.

Canada-Martinique about to kickoff followed by Mexico-Panama, should be good way to start the competition.

The squads for all the competing teams. Note that with 4 unattached players Canada leads the tournament with the most players currently clubless!

Also note Belize with a US coach and Haiti with a Cuban one!

If ever there was a year when some nation can end the Mexico-US domination of the tournament (they have won 10 of 11 Gold Cups) you would think it would be this year. Keep an eye out for Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama.

Definitely not "sleeping" on the Ticos, Catrachos or Panama & I know that the USA and Mexico have met three straight times in the final but the rivalry is SOOO intense that I think it's best, for CONCACAF & most fans, if it's USA-Mexico.

Of course, the last Gold Cup final, not involving USA v Mexico, was USA-Panama in 2005 & that was a pretty intense final.

I'm still hoping for a USA-Mexico final...and a chance to redeem ourselves after 2009 & 2011!!
