I'm not sure how (if at all) it factors into the FSC broadcast issues outlined above, but with FOX launching a 24 hour sports channel in August, what they do with their remaining soccer properties (including 'second-tier' events like CONCACAF Champions League) isn't clear to me. But if the heavyweights of ESPN, NBCSN, and now FS1 are all offering soccer as part of their regular mix of programming, I wonder how viable a soccer-only channel is at this point. It's not the niche sport it was even ten years ago.

Anyone who can watch a film of Pelé dummying the goalkeeper in the Mexico World Cup or Muhammad Ali beating Foreman in Zaire or see Said Aouita breaking the world record for the ten thousand metres or whatever it was—anyone who can watch those things without tears in their eyes, without being moved in the same way as they are by a work of art is a philistine—there’s no other word for them.

Fox Sports 1 just grabbed Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole from TSN in Canada to anchor their nightly highlight show. If they get the freedom to do what they want, they could be huge for the network. I think they might need some time to grow on people, but I'll be tuning in.

cheers,

Why do you think they will need time to grow on people? Just because they are newcomers unknown to most US viewers? Or is it something about their style?

By the way we viewers in the US do thank you Canadians for Terri Leigh! biggrin.gif

They're a little different. They remind me of kind 1980s David Letterman more than any sports broadcast comparison. Onrait likes to break into song from time to time. They also have a lot of recurring jokes that may take time to develop as well. They turned obscure goalie Sergei Bobrovsky into a cult hero in Canada and things like this: http://blog.sportaholik.com/2010/07/13/jay-onrait-ichiro/ always took run of the mill highlight packages and made them watchable.

cheers,

ESPN to launch daily soccer studio program in the US. That is good news, I just hope it is not going to be on too late for those of you on the right coast of the US. From the linked press release look at the program's focus,

•Employ ESPN FC’s global reporters, columnists and team bloggers for breaking news, rumors and player-transfer news, focusing primarily on the Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Spain’s La Liga, Major League Soccer, U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team and the Mexican National Team;

Topics where ESPN think the majority of US based fans are most interested. It is another step forward in the mainstream development of the sport in the US but I do hope those are not the exclusive focus of the new program.

Apparently the new show will air between 4 and 5 pm ET so set those DVRs while at work.
