Salvador Cabañas

Here is some sad news, Club America's Paraguayan international striker Salvador Cabañas was shot in the head last night at a Mexico City bar where he and his wife had gone. Latest report is he is conscious but in critical condition.

Horrible news. Cabañas is undergoing surgery now. Apparently the shooting occurred at 5 am in the bar's bathroom after Cabañas and his wife each had gone into their respective restrooms. This was not some neighborhood bar where this took place either, it happpened at one of the most well known bars in Mexico City. The state prosecutor's office says they do have some witnesses but also said they want to know why the bar was open at 5 am when closing time for all bars in Mexico City is 3 am.

I am just sickened by this news. And there are some troubling signs that this was a planned attack against Cabañas, there are no signs of a robbery and ESPN Deportes had a reporter on who said there are reports that a white latex glove was found outside the bar and just before the shooting, the lights went out in the establishment. Now I do not know if that is true or not and there has been no confirmation of that but this article in English does confirm that there was not a robbery and that the next few days are going to be the most important to see if Cabañas can survive:

Really sad news. I always rated him very highly as a player. I always wished Valencia would have signed him...

Just tragic news. I saw some clips from his neurosurgeon's news conference and he said that he is in a medically induced coma and that the next 48-72 hours will be key in determining if he can survive this attack. ESPN Deportes also showed scenes from the bar's surveillance camera and it looks like a planned attack (although it did not appear as if the light's went out.) One presumed attacker is already in the bathroom and the other is outside the men's room door chatting with a female. Cabanas and his wife go to the men's and women's room, then the guy leaves the woman and enters following cabanas. Later you see a security guard approach the men's room door and two men, the one chatting with the woman earlier and a 2nd guy walk out, the guard peaks in and talks into his microphone, presumably calling for help, but nobody stops the two from getting out of the bar as the surveillance shows them casually leaving the bar!

Hopefully tomorrow brings better news and the broadcasting of the video leads to the arrest of the asailants.

In times like this it does not matter which club you support, you just wish for Cabanas recovery. Hopefully playing that surveillance video does lead to some arrests. Last I heard the club's security guards are being held for questioning, that is not to say they were involved but as the vidoe shows they did not exactly react quickly to the events and the purported assailants just walked out the door.

This article identifies the two presumed shooters and the state prosecutors are not ruling out a misunderstanding related to the woman one of them is seen talking to outside of the restroom just before Cabanas walks in. The two on the surveillance video are bar regulars and one of them is believed to be involved in organized crime because he always travels with a bodyguard. He has been identified as Jesús, alias el JJ, also known as El Modelo (the model) and is believed to be the attacker. The guy who was chatting with the woman has been identified as Francisco, alias El Contador (the accountant). A third man, supposedly JJ's bodyguard was also seen leaving the bar with them.

If this is true it is even sadder, these two idiots were upset about the woman, reportedly a Cuban dancer, being close to the table where Cabanas, his wife, his brother in law and some other friends were. These fucking narcos and wanna be narcos are ruining my country. They have no morals at all.

I was watching the news this morning and they have identified "JJ" aka El Modelo as Jose Juan Balderas Garza, who is listed as a "businessman." Francisco "El Contador" is the one who is his bodyguard, no other men were reported with them. These two fools were at a table with the Cuban woman and two of her friends when she left and starting talking with Cabanas' brother in law which apparently pissed JJ off. Later he got into it with Cabanas when they were in the bathroom and that is when he pulled the gun on him and shot him. There was a 4th man in the bathroom who partially witnessed the events, a guy was cleaning one of the stalls when this all happened.

Heraing this makes this tale even more tragic. All because of JJ's insecurity and fake machismo. He is on the run now but now that his ID is out there, hopefully they will capture this fool soon.

Yes we all hope that idiot who shot Cabanas is captured soon. He better hope the authorities get him before some America fans do, and I am serious about that.

I read where the surgeon said this morning that the good news is Cabanas situation did not deteriorate over night. I imagine his physical condition will help him in this fight for his life. In Argentina a few months ago, a retired player Fernando Caceres was shot in the head during a car jacking and was not expected to survive but he is recovering although living in a rehabilitation facility as he learns how to walk and talk again. Caceres doctors said his excellent physical condition as an ex athlete helped him recover from wounds which would have killed most.

I always enjoyed watching Cabanas play and he was the key player for both America and Paraguay's national team. I am not even thinking about him one day returning to play, I just hope he survives this senseless attack.

I just read on ESPN Deportes that they said he could move the right side of his body last night before the surgery, but not the left.

Hopefully once he recovers from the surgery he will get better.

It is too early to tell but as Loco wrote there are reports that the bullet went through the right side of his brain which controls his left side motor activities but he is still in a medically induced coma so it is too soon to really know if he has all of his motor functions. The doctor did say the fact he did not deteriorate today is a good sign but these are still the crucial hours.

The Cuban woman who apparently was the cause of the dispute which led to cabanas shooting was the one who identified Jose J Balderas Garza. rosarino is right he will be better off if the authorities find him than if some America fans, both regular ones and those in the underworld, find him first.

America are going ahead with their game this Sunday against Indios.

Cabañas condition worsened today as the swelling on his brain where the wound ocurred has increased. The hopeful news is when his sedation was lowered, his brain showed reaction to stimulus and apparently he recognized his wife's and mother's voices.

The swelling decreased and Cabanas' doctors said today was his best day yet so there is promising news. About his ever returning to play, that is so far in the future in my opinion. His first goal is to survive the attack. But a bullet traveling through your brain has to have done serious damage.

Cabañas is continuing to improve but remains in critical but stable condition in the hospital. This morning I saw extended video from the bar's surveillance cameras, and Cabañas and his wife, like all who enter were patted down as they entered the bar. But JJ Balderas Garza, the accused shooter and his bodyguards, there were two with him by the way, were not. He even was hugged by the bar's bouncer as he entered! And then as mentioned none of the bar's security tried to stop them from leaving even after a gunshot was heard. This may be why the bar manager and several security guards remain in custody for questioning.
