True story: when my mother was in hospital she got constipation, and it sent her paranoid. Not because she had it, but because it does something to your brain. One of the doctors collared me and asked me if she was always that way (ie paranoid) and when I said no he told me that the effect of paranoia is quite common in severely constipated people.
