Tutorial for Character interaction
So, you've come across a role-play going on and you want to join it because it is open. First, you will need to know how many posts are in the role-play and who is all participating. In most cases, if it was just started and the member needs players, you can usually jump on in. However, certain steps need to be considered and followed through before joining. The first step is to know exactly who the character of the previous member is. You can find this out by going to that character’s bio and reading it thoroughly. You will want to know all there is to know about that member’s character. After all, would you purchase a vehicle without knowing anything about it? Likewise, research is good and a must. Once you’ve read the bio, it is essential to read the very first post. What is happening in the post? What is the character doing or saying? Once you know this, it is alright to make a post. However, you want to make sure that your post runs with the plot of the RP. While it is alright to put some focus on your character, you don’t want to include all focus to give your character all the attention. This is selfish and deflects from the plot. Other characters played by other members then become ignored, which is unfair to them. Example 1: Member A: Sparkling like diamonds, the waters below the ship eased the mental tension the young man felt. This vacation was perhaps something he did need, but how he wished he could hear the sound of the waves, the cries of the birds. Being born deaf often caused complications through life, and learning sign language had been a struggle. Not that he hadn’t learned it. No, that wasn’t the problem. The real problem was that not everyone knew what he was trying to say to them, and a pen and paper weren't always at his disposal. Keaton sighed heavily, gripping the edge of the ship’s rails with both hands. The smell of the ocean hit his nostrils and he inhaled deeply. At times, this was the only true way that he could relax. The vacation to the Kiki Islands was exactly what he needed. Member B: Amber twirled on the deck, particularly excited about going to the Kiki Islands. She had never been there, and really didn’t know what to expect. It was certain to be an event of the life time. The wind blew and nearly took off her sun hat, but a quick grab and a firm hold kept the hat on her head. The life of the cruise was exciting, elaborate dinners, great dances, cute men… It was the life. She turned around and noticed the young man standing at the rails with his back to her. Although she didn’t know him, she didn’t think it would hurt to say hello. Besides, he looked lonely. She walked over to him and stood beside him, hoping he would notice her presence. Member A: Keaton was a bit startled when the girl suddenly came to stand by him. He didn’t know who she was, and wondered if she had come to view the ocean for her own personal reasons. Perhaps she wanted to see some dolphins. A couple of them were now swimming behind the ship. He remained quiet, unsure if he should sign a greeting to her. Such was the folly that he had inside himself. Member B: Amber drew in a deep breath, inhaling the smell of the ocean. She saw a dolphin leap over the water and giggled. Dolphins were extraordinary creatures, the angel of the sea as some would say. She looked at the man beside her and suddenly signed to him in sign language. “Beautiful scenery, is it not? Stop! Before going any further, can anyone tell me what is wrong with these posts here? Who did what wrong and why? |

Amber is stated to have not known who Keaton was at the time of their encounter. While the RP states that Keaton was deaf, he never told Amber about this condition, making Amber's sudden sign language odd. People who first meet usually start the conversation with a spoken remark as opposed to sign language if they don't know about any condition that the person he or she meets may have.

Very good, but there are two mistakes listed. Can you find the second mistake? Re-read the example carefully. Though I must say well done on your first attempt.

Hmm... im going out on a limb here and say it was hinted that Amber knew Keaton was deaf when she went and stood next to him 'hoping he would feel her presence'?

Lystella already pointed out that it was stated Amber did not know Ketaon was not deaf yet she signed to him instead of speaking.
