Her next film Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic is up for release this week and actor Rani has been busy with special appearances. We meet somewhere between the initial rounds and the last at YRF studio where Mukerji, dressed in white denims and a snugly-fitted white shirt complete with spectacles, exudes the easy, girl-next-door charm.
There are, she maintains, a few basic rules with her—she doesn’t mince words, doesn’t suffer fools gladly and has an aversion to picking up the ‘phone to inform journalists of her personal itinerary…The rest is fairly simple.

According to co-star Saif Ali Khan, “Rani is a fantastic actor. Aditya Chopra, the producer, always says that we work well together because she tends to sort of ground me and I make her a little more Westernised. I think we do share an interesting chemistry on screen. I have a lot of respect for her. Out of most people that I have met in the industry she is very real, very down to earth and very family-oriented and a strong valued girl.”

Even as we speak, she is in the midst of ‘phone and radio interviews –a chap from BBC calls up on Monika’s (spokesperson for Yash Raj Films) phone for an interview and as she’s not around the actor answers it. A little later, she informs Monika of it.
“Now they will say that she’s taking the calls at YRF. Hmm. So it means something!” she says in mock horror! Halleluiah! The girl has a sense of humour.

Exasperated she may be with rumours about marriage with Aditya Chopra, the scion of the Yash Raj empire, but she’s not letting it come in the way of a good laugh. Excerpts from a no-holds- barred interview with Screen.

First let’s clear the air about this supposed embargo on journalists.
I am not the sort of a person who is going to pick up the ‘phone and call up journalists to tell them about my life. I am comfortable talking about work, which I do when it is required. The part that I object to are the false stories that are made up about us…the media has been getting me married off for a while now..I was on the sets of Laaga... togged in wedding finery for Konkona’s wedding scene and the next thing I know is that channels have gone to town about my so-called marriage. My poor father – he is getting by in age-- has to step out for clarifications each time such a thing happens. Long ago it was reported that Govinda had bought me a house – thankfully, he set the record straight.

The common perception is that you are very selective about the movies that you act in. Is that why we don’t see you in too many films?
Actually that’s untrue. I did three films last year – Ta Ra Rum Pum, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and a cameo in Saawariya. My last release was in October last year and now Thoda Pyaar... is ready for release. It’s just been six months during which I was busy shooting for Thoda Pyaar... and then I got caught up with work on my house. Suzanne (Roshan) was doing the interiors and then her baby was due, so in the last stages I had to take over the supervision of the work which took up a lot of my time but soon I will start working on my next film with Shahid Kapoor.

The Yash Raj film wherein you play a cricketer… which brings me to the other gripe people have that you no longer do films outside Yashraj banner?
The way I work is that a role has to excite me. Yash Raj films have offered me a variety of roles that have been challenging and satisfying, whether it’s Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Ta Ra Rum Pum or Thoda Pyaar...

A few of your movies last year with YRF did not do well, so would you not look outside of the banner for projects?
I would agree that Laaga... did not meet expectations but Ta Ra Rum Pum, unlike the popular perception, did quite well…perhaps not as well as Chak De! India but in its own way it did rather well. Everywhere I go, I have kids and their mothers tell me that they loved the movie. The media is very kind to certain movies and therefore creates a perception about its success which may be slightly exaggerated and so too for movies that they are not as convinced about. That Jhoom Barabar... which was next in line from YRF didn’t do well made matters worse – the performances of the two films were clubbed together.

It’s often been said that nobody can quite cry like Rani Mukerji on screen, so do we see you turn on the waterworks in this movie?
(Laughing) Actually I have had a lot of practice courtesy my brother Raja who resented my arrival. All through my growing- up years I was bawling out loud complaining about Raja but as we grew up things changed. This film in fact is a clear departure from all the crying because I play an angel and angels don’t know what sorrow is. They only know about happiness and laughter. There is a scene where I am examining Saif’s tear because I don’t know what it is and I want to experience that emotion.

You are supposed to be quite a mischievous angel at that?
Yes, I cause eclipses and all sorts of turmoil.

What else is different from your earlier films?
I get to fly! I was harnessed all the time and I could empathise with Hrithik Roshan. People would often joke about it and call me the female Krissh.

Speaking of being a brat, are you anything like that in person? Any starry tantrums?
Well, I am a brat with those that are close to me like my family, but no starry tantrums really.

You have acted with almost all the top drawer actors and filmmakers and many of them are friends to you…what’s been the learning?
The most valuable thing in all these years has been my interaction with actors such as Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Haasan and filmmakers such as Karan Johar, Sanjay (Bhansali), Yash uncle and Mani Ratnam who are all icons in their own right…It’s been very rewarding. There are some people with whom I have hit it off right at the beginning of my career like Karan, Sanjay and Vaibhavi Merchant who I met during Bunty Aur Babli. Aamir and Shah Rukh have always been there for me – they are people for whom I have a lot of respect. Also because of a career in films, I have met so many people like heads of state and many others and it has all been very enriching.

And what about Abhishek Bachchan with whom you have done some good films?
Abhishek and I are great as co-stars, but we were never buddies.

You have lent your voice to Koochie Koochie Hota Hai. Any more animation experiments coming up?
Yes, I dubbed for Tina, a very cute dog in the animated version. I would love to do something like what Julia Roberts did for Charlotte’s Web.

Saif and Rani share Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic!

Our wait to know the title of Kunal Kohli’s forthcoming film starring Saif and Rani for the Yash Raj banner has finally ended! Kunal Kohli’s next film is ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’,a film that will revolve around Saif - a rich man, four orphan kids and Rani- the angel who comes in their lives to help them get rid of their worries.

I eagerly attended the exclusive screening of the film’s ‘first look’, and was relieved to see that the film didn’t bear any resemblance to Mary Poppins or Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke as was reported by many publications.

The film in fact reveals how four orphan kids are forced to shift to Saif Ali Khan’s mansion in spite of them hating him and vice versa! Saif even makes it clear that if it wasn’t for the court’s orders he too wouldn’t let the kids stay with him! In their troubled lives nothing seems to look positive until Rani, the angel arrives... what she does and what is the actual relationship that Saif shares with the kids is what the film all about...

On declaring the title Kunal said, “When we encounter problems, we feel the need for someone to come and help us! We want a magic to happen. We need an angel! Thus my film is called what it is called. What inspired me to make the film was the fact that families are not made by birth but by love and this is the love that the characters in my film share. Also as you saw in the promo, it is not even loosely inspired by Mary Poppins.”

He further added, “Thoda Pyaar Thhoda Magic’ is not a fairy tale as the family in the film is very real. The kids are not filmy with gel in their hair! In fact three of the four kids have never even faced the camera before! They are like the Mr. India children. I was inspired by Mr. India and it was not a children’s film.”

Talking about his debut as a co-producer, Kunal elaborated, “After a while you want to progress, earn a little more money and you do feel that you should be able to own the product you make. I told Adi about it and he said why not begin with this film?”

Kunal concluded his brief chat to me by saying, “I’ll give you more information when the film releases on 27th June ”

The Saif-Rani banter in Hum Tum hooked us completely and we hope they create some more magic on screen with their awesome chemistry once again!

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic-Movie Review
By Taran Adarsh

A film like THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC makes you nostalgic. It takes you back to the light-hearted, feel-good cinema made by directors of calibre like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. The focus was on narrating a simple story. A movie that put a smile on your face even if you walked in with a frown.

THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC does exactly that!

Strangely, for some reason, the film lacks the hype associated with a biggie. Perhaps, the string of flops the premiere production house [YRF] churned out, indirectly, took a toll on this movie. But THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC should reverse the trend.

Write your own movie review of Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic
A bit of MARY POPPINS. A dash of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. A sprinkle of ENCHANTED. THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC may not be the most original script, but the sweet and tender moments in this enterprise elevate it to a watchable status.

That Kunal Kohli is a fine storyteller has already been proved [HUM TUM and FANAA were accomplished works]. Now watch him handle a simple, uncomplicated story with dexterity and you'd agree, Kunal has only matured with time.

To put a long story short, THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC is a simple story, well told. It's one of those films you'd enjoy watching with your family, without feeling embarrassed or red-faced. It's sure to put a smile on your face when you exit the auditorium, which, frankly, is a rarity these days!

Ranbeer [Saif Ali Khan], a leading industrialist, is a loner, not by choice, but because he lost everyone he ever loved. He is now faced with a peculiar and uncomfortable situation. In a rare and landmark court verdict, he is to look after four orphan children. The orphans hate him and want revenge from him. The children do not want to live with a man they hate; he too cannot face them or look them in the eye for certain reasons. Their life together is very unhappy.

One day, the kids pray to God for help and He does help them. He sends his most mischievous, childlike, lovable angel to the rescue, with a mission to bring Ranbeer and the kids together. Geeta [Rani Mukerji] comes bicycling down a rainbow… and bursts into Ranbeer's house as the self-proclaimed new nanny.

And then starts the roller coaster ride of fun, emotions, magic and love. An angel who doesn't know what love is. A man who always lost love. Four orphans who need love.

Kunal Kohli opens the cards at the very outset. The car accident and the subsequent court judgment set the story in motion. But the first half isn't without its share of flaws. The pranks played by the kids to harass Saif fall flat. They're anything but funny most of the times. Ameesha's character is another sore point. Actually, the film could've done without this irritating character.

However, Rani's entry in the story adds magic to the goings-on. Her interaction with the kids and how she eventually wins them over is enjoyable. The kids, of course, are the actual heroes of this enterprise, but more on that later.

It's the second hour that takes the film to a different level. How Saif bonds with each of them and the turning point, an incident that makes the kids see Saif differently, is simply excellent. Ditto for the finale, which may seem Bollywoodish, but you don't mind it.

Kunal Kohli has worked with the best of stars [Aamir, Saif, Hrithik, Kajol, Kareena, Rani], but the real test is to extract performances from four unknown kids and that's where he deserves brownie points. It's easy to handle grown-ups, but kids can be really tough. Also, Kunal doesn't [thankfully] make the proceedings melodramatic with rona-dhona thrown in to make it a perfect 'family film'. The emotions are subtle, but nonetheless move you.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is a letdown, barring just one track, 'Pyaar Ke Liye'. Sudeep Chatterjee's cinematography is perfect. The effects are eye catching at times.

Saif fits into the sauve millionaire part [Richie Rich - the poor little rich guy?] very well. And the best part is, he never 'acts'. He's a complete natural! It's a pleasure to watch Rani in a role that does justice to her talent. She's lovable. But why is she sporting the same outfit throughout? Ameesha doesn't work, mainly because her role looks like an add-on. And what is she wearing throughout the movie? But she sizzles in the 'Lazy Lamhe' track.

The four kids are adorable. Each of them is terrific, but the one who's bound to walk away with taalis is the cute Sikh kid called Iqbal. Watch him break into the 'Main Nikla Gadi Leke' song from GADAR; it's bound to bring the house down. Rishi Kapoor is likable in a cameo. Taraana is okay.

On the whole, THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC is a simple story told very effectively and efficiently. At the box-office, it may be a slow starter, but should gradually gather momentum with a strong word of mouth. Business at multiplexes will be the best.

Go watch it, it's a treat for your entire family!

3.5/5

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic - Lots of pyaar, Lots of Magic

TPTM is a wonderful feel good film which has the perfect mix of love, emotions, comedy and also the larger than life part of Bollywood!

Indya.com Rating: 3.5/5
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherji, Ameesha Patel, Akshat Chopra, Shriya Sharma, Rachit Sadana and Ayushi Burman.

Director: Kunal Kohli

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (TPTM) begins with young Ranbir Talwar (Saif Ali Khan) who goes through the trauma of losing everyone that he loves and is close to – his best friend, his mother and his professor at boarding school. This makes him the hard businessman that he is today – rich, ruthless and emotionless. The film begins with Ranbir meeting with an accident on his way back from yet another awards ceremony and deep in thought, his BMW rams into a Maruti instantly killing the occupants of the car – Mr. and Mrs. Walia. Fast forward one year and Ranbir's case has finally reached judgment day. Arriving with girlfriend Mallaika (Ameesha Patel), Ranbir waits for the judgment that could positively land him in jail.

However, for the first time in even the make believe judiciary of Bollywood, the judge passes a new style of punishment. The four orphaned kids of Mr. and Mrs. Walia will be placed under Ranbir's care and he can't go anywhere without them. The judge will be personally looking into that. (Yes, you are probably going yes, right but c'mon this is Bollywood!)

And so in walk Vashisht (Akshat Chopra), Aditi (Shriya Sharma), Iqbal (Rachit Sadana) and Avantika (Ayushi Burman). The four children themselves have been waiting for this day – the day that they can exact revenge from the man who has taken away their parents from them. From occupying all the loos in the house to creating a ruckus as he tries to close business deals, the kids do everything in their plan to make his life impossible. One night things reach a whole new level and the kids and Saif exchange words that they shouldn't resulting in a whole lot of tears and fervent prayers to God to help them out.

In walks God (Rishi Kapoor) who is having his meeting with his angels to answer prayers of the people below on Earth. Seeing the discord in the Talwar household, he sends his angel Geeta (Rani Mukherji) to help them out on the condition that as soon as she manages to get Ranbir and the kids together she must return back to Heaven. And that's how angel Geeta arrives as the nanny to the kids.

Obviously the kids are in no mood to make things easy for her and so they set up an elaborate plan to get rid of her only to fail every step of the way. Slowly and steadily she wins over each of the kids and then helps each of them bond with Ranbir. And now with her work done, its time for her to return back to Heaven and God. But with love blossoming between Ranbir and Geeta, she doesn't want to go back but spend time on Earth as a common man. Will that happen is what you need to watch the film for?

Credit needs to be given to director Kunal Kohli for extracting brilliant performances from the four children as well as the actors alike. In fact Rani and Saif's role although central to the film would probably fall in the supporting cast role, because the film has been woven so well around the four kids. Little sardar Iqbal is a treat and you almost want to pick him off the screen and take him home!

Saif's interaction with the kids comes across as totally natural – from his anxiousness at the start to the anger to the tender love and care are all in the right mix. Finally we come to Rani – she has done a great job as an angel but it would have been nicer to see her have some more fun with the kids as she tried to win them over.

Lastly the special effects which have been spoken endlessly do deserve a mention but there are certain scenes like where Rani is shown walking through the four seasons or the part where Rani drives Saif's car on the top of a tunnel could have been done slightly better.

TPTM is a wonderful feel good film which has the perfect mix of love, emotions, comedy and also the larger than life part of Bollywood!

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic
27 Jun, 2008 12:51 pm ISTlRenuka Vyavahare/INDIATIMES MOVIES

Director: Kunal Kohli
Cast: Rani Mukerjee, Saif Ali Khan, Amisha Patel
Rating: ***1/2

The promos of few films are at times deceiving and this is what has precisely happened in the case of Kunal Kohli’s Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic! The trailers of the film failed to generate sufficient interest in the film and Yash Raj’s previous over-hyped film Tashan’s failure only added to my resilience against expecting much from it.

The film begins with a flashback of a brooding business tycoon Ranvir (Saif) and his lonely childhood. Every important person in Ranvir’s life leaves him forever thus creating a void in his life, which he doesn’t wish to fill anymore. He keeps himself guarded from getting attached to anyone fearing he/she might again leave him making his life bereft of any happiness as it has always been. But as luck would have it, an accident brings Ranvir back to square one. As a punishment of accidentally killing a couple, Ranvir is given the custody of their four kids!

A person who has forgotten what love means is ordered to make sure that he showers the kids with unconditional love and attention. Devoid of it himself, Ranvir struggles to do so and thus enters a nanny Gita (Rani) who helps Ranvir bridge the gap between him the kids. Gita is an angel in reality and through her magical powers she brings back smile and happiness in the life of Ranvir and the kids. However, their happiness is short-lived as their guardian angel has to go back to heaven where she belongs...

The magic of TPTM works as everyone yearns for love and wishes that their beloved would never leave them but what happens when they do? Do you stop living your life? Do you stop smiling forever? One has to move on and find happiness in someone else’s joy. Holding on to anger, grudge, revenge gives anything but happiness and forgiveness is the key to bliss. TPTM is all about this and makes its point wonderfully without getting preachy or overtly sentimental.

No one sympathises with the other in the film, yet it brings tears in your eyes to see four abandoned kids missing being in the company of their deceased parents, a man who has all the wealth in the world and can face any problem but cannot face his conscience which reminds him of his unforgivable mistake.

To our relief the film doesn’t have any twists and turns, nor has the director attempted to do anything weirdly different. He sticks to the method of narrating simple, subtle yet effective story-telling. The director doesn’t hide to show that he is highly inspired by Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke and The Sound of Music either.

The climax of the film could have been more effective but that doesn’t take away anything from the movie.

As far as the performances are concerned, Rani steals the show completely. She infuses life in the film with her verve and pep. She makes for a perfect angel. Saif looks and acts as dashing as ever. The couple’s chemistry makes the film all the more likeable. (Watch out for their banters) The kids render a decent act too. Amisha Patel plays a dumb fashion slave who does nothing except for annoying you whenever she appears!

Shankar Mahadevan’s melodious music and touching lyrics add soul to the film... especially the song Pyaar Ke Liye.

Watch the film to discover an angel in you. Cast a magic spell on yourself and shower your love on those who need it much more than you do...

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic-Movie Review

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Amisha Patel, Shriya Sharma, Ayushi Burman, Rachit Sidana, Akshat Chopra and Rishi Kapoor
directed by Kunal Kohli
music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Learning from their disastrous attempts at other genres, Yash Raj Films gets back to wholesome family flicks. And director Kunal Kohli steps up seeming to have the answer to all the woes of the banner. By throwing together a kiddie flick, that has thoda of everything and still seem a fresh package of a rather ol’ wine.

So a thoda of Sound of Music or Mary Poppins never did anyone any harm. Nor will thoda dose of recent flicks like Nanny McPhee or Lemony Snickets. So why not stir it all in the melting pot and bring forth THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC.

Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali) is a pretty successful businessman Saif Ali Khan). Though he has been pretty much the achiever at everything he does from childhood, he has only stood to lose the people he loves. And this loner‘s life takes the plunge when he ends up killing a couple, the Walias, in a road accident.

However the twist is that instead of a prison sentence, the judge hands out a controversial judgement whereby the accused Ranbeer is given the complete responsibility of the four kids of the deceased couple.

However Ranbeer realizes that this is not going to be an easy task especially with the foursome out to seek revenge. Even Ranbeer’s bimbo girlfriend Malaika (Amisha) too ends up failing to win the hearts of the kids

That is when God himself (Rishi Kapoor), dressed in all white, decides that he shall dispatch his angel down to earth to help out the kids. And he finds no better candidate than the bubbly Geeta. (Rani Mukherjee).

Now it is upto Geeta to pose as a nanny and ensure that she completes her task of getting Ranbeer and the kids together!

Director Kohli has made a splendid kiddie flick and is sure to be lapped up by those below 10. And the film has enough to keep the ones accompanying them entertained. The ones in between however are not going to derive the same amount of enjoyment. Barring the ‘Lazy Lamhe’ number, Kohli has ensured it stays rooted in the fantasy realm in which the narration is spinned around. But that one song though eventually is well incorporated, does stand out like a sore thumb. But then being the most popular number from the film, I guess that shall not bother many.

The script and narration is straight forward and nothing exceptional is tried out here. You do not have crass humour or the unwarranted subplots here in the name of Bollywood masala. But then again, that certain charm associated with movies like Mr India and Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke is missing here…the kind that makes these moves a repeat viewing success for viewers of all ages.

What saves the day for the older audiences at the end of day is the acting. Saif Ali Khan plays his part perfectly and shows how much he has evolved as an actor. Saif is certainly at ease here and fits the bill.

Also after crying her heart out in recent outings like Baghban and Laaga Chunari…, Rani Mukherjee is bound to be received with open arms as the bubbly angel who just cannot cry. That in itself is a welcome relief and gives Rani , an extremely powerful performer a chance to chill away with this role. Once again, even Rani makes it look like a cake walk and to top it, like a cherry comes the on screen chemistry between the Hum Tum pair.

But the real life line of this film are the kids and that is where Kunal Kohli has kept his word and not shown the kids as the typically irritating all-too-smart kids that run havoc on the Indian screens. This foursome plays it out as normal kids and therefore connects a lot better with the viewers, especially the boy who plays the role of Iqbal. He walks away with some of the better scenes in the film.

As for a Kohli favourite Rishi Kapoor, he comes out decent enough as God in Jeetu ji’s white attire. But then again he is no Morgan Freeman. Amisha Patel plays the bimbo part perfectly and gets a chance to sizzle away in the Lazy Lamhe song.

Back to the movie, the USP of the flick is its creative screenplay which is aided by some of the finest visual effects witnessed on the Indian screen. Be it the dance in the skies ‘Bulbula’ or the Night at the Museum inspired ‘Beetey Kal Se’, it brings freshness to the song visualization. And what is commendable is the fact that the makers never bragged about it but instead let the magic take over onscreen.

That then brings us to the music department which is extremely strong. To begin with Shankar Ehsaan Loy trio reteams with lyricist Prasoon Joshi to recreate to a great extent the magic they brought to Taare Zameen Par. And that is well followed up by the background score from Sandeep Chowta which is effective despite resorting to Hollywood-ish clichés. And even if you miss all these finer things, you are still sure not to miss some Apple and Dominoes branding in the movie. But you cannot be blamed for missing certain Lucha singh and Sher singh who goes completely missing from the script pages as the film progresses.

This is the kind of movie that has a certain vintage Disney charm and feel to it. And we all know that in these days of bikini clad hot bods and bare chested dancer boys, not much Bollywood movies know what that exactly is. But Kohli seems to prefer sticking to the basics to come up with a sweet and endearing movie. And thankfully, it is low on melodrama too.

So what you waiting for, take those kids and treat them to Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. This one is for them, and let them enjoy the magic and fantasy.

MoviemagiK rates it 3.5/5

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic Movie Review
Posted by: Indicine Team | June 27th, 2008 | Email This Post

The only trailer of Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic that created some sort of a buzz around the movie was the ‘Lazy Lamhe’ trailer featuring Amisha Patel in skimpy clothes. Yashraj in the last 2 years or so, have stopped promoting their movies as aggresively as they used to. And the result.. a slow start at the box-office. An average opening means, a lot depends on strong word of mouth, for which the movie has to connect with the audience. Last few movies of Yashraj Films, with the only exception being Chak De India, have failed miserably. Can the Saif Ali Khan - Rani Mukherjee starrer, directed by Kunal Kohli of Fanna and Hum Tum fame create magic?

Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali Khan) one of India’s top business tycoon, is a loner. He tends to loose everyone he loves. In a court verdict, Ranbeer is ordered to look after 4 kids, who hold him responsible for the death of their parents. The kids hate him, and he hates them too. They try every trick in the book to make his life a living hell. The kids succeed, but long for parental love and affection, at the end of the day, they are a bunch of unhappy kids. One night, they pray to God for help, and god obliges. He sends a bubbly angel in the form of a nanny, to take care of the kids. Thoda pyaar and Thoda magic is used to unite Ranbeer and the kids.

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic Review
The first half of Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, although slow, will appeal mostly to the kids between the age group of 4 - 12. It has almost nothing in it for the older generation. A lot of special effects have been used, which the kids would enjoy immensly. There is a song shot in a museum wherein a Dinosaur dances along with 4 kids and Rani! The second half, is a family entertainer, it has something in it for everyone. There is a super hot Lazy Lamhe track, Amisha Patel dares to bare it all.. well almost! The kids would benefit a lot from a movie like TPTM, it has a message, told in a very entertaining way which would connect with the kids. The church scene at the end, isnt very convincing.. But then TPTM is a fun movie, trying to find sense in the story doesnt make much sense. All said and done, Kunal Kohli movies have always managed to entertain and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is no exception, his execution of the script too is upto the mark. The special effects are awesome. Barring Lazy Lamhe and Nihaal Hogayi, rest of the songs are disappointing. Cinematography is good.

Saif Ali Khan is superb, a very matured performance. Its amazing to see this actor perform varied roles with utmost ease and confidence. I found Rani Mukherjee a bit irritating in the first half, but she does well in the second. The kids are sweet and perform well. Most movies these days have kids dressed in designer clothings, perfectly set hair, neat and clean. But in Thoda Pyaar, they look like they should.. like Kids! Amisha Patel has very few scenes, the only demand of her role is to look hot in almost nothing, she manages that and a bit more! Rishi Kapoor is good.

Overall, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is not exactly a only-for-kids movie. No doubt, they would be the ones to enjoy the movie the most, but there is something in it for everyone. Book your tickets, relax yourself, go and enjoy this fun ride. The opening has been average, a lot now depends on word of mouth.

Am gonna divide the rating into 2 parts.

For kids Rating: 4 stars

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic Movie Review Print

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic - Kunal Kohli upholds the Yashraj Banner!
SAVIO ZACHARIA, IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 27, 2008]

Despite Kunal Kohli’s attempts to push the release of the other film ahead or request producer Sahil Chadha to change his film’s title, Kunal faces the confusion battle of titles.

With the sinking of Tashan and Yash Chopra himself taking over the reins of the Yash Raj Films banner, immense pressure rides on Kunal and the entire force at YRF.

While glancing through the promos, you would expect this film to be a kiddie film or just yet another glamour speckled film with Rani, Saif and Rishi Kapoor –all from ‘Hum Tum’. But Kunal who is also the co-producer of the film surprises you out and out.

The film revolves around Ranbir Talwar (Saif Ali Khan ) a rich businessman who in an accident is responsible for the death of a husband and wife. The judge orders Ranbir to officially be the guardian of these kids else he would have to spend 20 years in jail. The bunch of 4 kids soon move to Ranbir’s house with a prime motive of revenge.

As the kids are unhappy and cry out to God(Rishi Kapoor), he answers their prayer and sends them Geeta (Rani Mukherji) , his favourite angel. As Geeta enters the family as the nanny with her super powers she is soon able to win over the kids and her next mission is do away with the hatred the kids have for Ranbir.

Let me clarify that this is by no means is just a kiddie films. Kunal does really well in striking a balance for all audiences. The film emerges as a complete family entertainer. It has its moments of fun , laughter and tears.

Kunal Kohli handles the subject with care and never let’s any character in the film especially with their ‘star’ presence to overshadow the script. The film never has a dull moment and keeps you engaged and for most of the period in splits.

The special effects are such a treat. It just lifts the film. The kids are surely gonna go crazy over this film.

The casting of the film is just apt. The kids are a treat specially the Sardar who is the true hero of the film. He is so cute and delivers with excellence. Notice even the youngest girl in the film she too is cute and delivers with complete innocence. Watch out for the scene where Saif and the Sardar become friends and also when Saif tells Avantika that he wants to dump Ameesha. It’s hilarious!

Saif Ali Khan shows great maturity as an actor and carries off really well. It’s a treat to see a simple Saif unlike the usual cool funky Saif.

Rani Mukherji delivers well after a very long time. It’s amazing to see Rani do away with her sexy image and come with a more substantial role.

Rishi Kapoor does well as GOD. He enacts very much like Morgan Freeman of ‘Bruce Almighty’.

Ameesha Patel comes in a guest appearance for all those people looking for the sexy element in this film. She enacts the character of a complete bimbo in those micro-minis and Bikini.

The cinematography of the film is splendid with effects adding to it all.

The music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy comes in as a treat with tracks such as ‘Kabhi Socha Na Tha’ and ‘Nihaal Ho Gayi’ growing on you. The lyrics by Prasoon Joshi are meaningful and deep.

On the whole, Kunal Kohli excels with ease and brings forth a movie that is the winner of the week. Thank God Yashraj Films still have directors like Kunal Kohli around to save them from disgrace.

Rating : ***1/2

Movie Review: ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’
by Debtaru De

A combination of fantasy & reality : This is one film which is a perfect blend between fantasy & real life. That’s the movie’s USP. What's more is that the heroine of this film is not allowed to love, that makes it a bit unusual too.

Moreover, unusual is that Rani Mukherjii playing an angel that never happened in the Indian Cinema, in the last 50 years, has not made a film like this. We really haven't seen women doing anything with super-natural powers before.

Character Sketches : Rani Mukerji alias Geeta - Geeta is like a storm who barges into Ranbeer's life when he and the four orphans find it difficult to live with each other.

Geeta comes with a mission from heaven to unite Ranbeer and the kids, but something happens on the way... an angel who could not love starts wondering what love is.

An angel who is above all human emotions of tears and pain and love, starts to feel something. But how can an angel love? She's on a mission - she has to go back when it's done.

Vashisht, Aditi, Iqbal & Avantika: When the four Walia children are orphaned, they decide one thing - they don't need any relatives to take care of them as they have what they need to survive - they have each other.

But what they really want is revenge from the man they hate - Ranbeer Talwar.

Saif Ali Khan alias Ranbeer Talwar - Ranbeer Talwar was a young boy who lost everyone close to him. He became a loner.

He was an achiever from the time he was a boy, but no victory, no trophy meant anything to him, as he was alone. The one thing he always wanted in his life was love and that was the only thing he always lost.

A winner in every deal, in every aspect of his life, Ranbeer immersed himself in his work and completely ignored every other aspect of his life, until he is face to face with four orphans who need love and an angel who could not love.

Story : Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali Khan), one of the country's top industrialists, is a loner, not out of his free will but just because he lost everyone, he ever loved.

Life turns around 360 degrees when he faces the most uncomfortable situation of his life. In a very unusual court verdict, he is to look after four orphan children.

Unfortunately, the orphans hate him and want revenge from him for some reason and Ranbeer cannot meet their eye for certain reasons. The children do not want to live with a man they hate and they go ahead to make it quite evident.

Their life together is very unhappy, one day they pray to God for help, and he does help them. He sends his most mischievous, childlike, lovable angle to the rescue, with a mission to bring Ranbeer and the kids together.

Geeta (Rani Mukherjee) comes cycling down a rainbow... and bursts into Ranbeer's house as the self-proclaimed new nanny. And then starts the roller coaster ride of fun, emotions, magic and love.

An angel who doesn't know what love is, A man who always lost love, 4 orphans who need love all come together to bring you a film with fun, excitement, masti, tears, magic and love truly......’Thoda Pyar, Thoda Magic’!

Underwater Shooting: The film has a sexy song “Lazy Lamhe” featuring Amisha Patel in a yellow bikini designed by Manish Malhotra, which grabbing the eyeballs. Much preparation and hard work went into the shooting.

The shooting of the song wasn’t a cakewalk for both Amisha and director Kunal Kohli. The song was shot at a resort in Alibaug. Mr. Kohli initially planned to wrap the song within eight days. But it eventually took longer than that.

The number was set in and around a swimming pool. Since a part of the song shows Amisha going underwater, the actress had to train before doing the scenes. Also, Kohli got a special underwater camera to shoot those sequences.

However, when Amisha began to shoot, she developed fever because of repeatedly going into cold water in the month of January. Then, Kohli found a way out. He planned to heat up the pool’s water before shooting.

This doubled the task of the production team but the result was eventually achieved. Finally, the song that was meant to be shot in 8 days was canned in two week’s time.

Overall: The film is very different from all the Kohli’s previous films. He did not use the same style of directing in any of his films. It’s a combination of fantasy and reality. The genre of this film is slightly different.

Fantasy is interwoven with reality like in ‘Mr. India’, ‘Krrish’ and ‘Koi Mil Gaya’. These films have kids but are not directed only towards kids, it could be watched by audiences of all ages.

Kids, now – a - days are very intelligent and you cannot talk down to them. They have to be treated with respect. Kunal’s film is an entertaining Hindi film, which is for kids as well as the masses.

Shankar – Ehsaan - Loy have given the music for ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ and the lyrics are by Prasoon Joshi. It’s a complete mix of emotional and upbeat music. The music of the films have always been strong and interesting.

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic Movie Review

June 27, 2008 8:03:38 PM IST
By Martin D'Souza, Bollywood Trade News Network

Kunal Kohli gets his HUM TUM team together to recreate THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC. He even has Rishi Kapoor playing God, who earlier played father to Saif Ali Khan in HUM TUM.

To be fair to Yashraj Films, this movie will undo a lot of damage, salvaging box-office collections all through the country. Reason: this film is based on kids, and it cuts across all age groups.

Kunal Kohli begins the proceedings with a bang, literally. Within a few moments, as the title track begins, he captures (Ranbeer Talwar) Saif Ali Khan's childhood and goes straight for the kill as his car bangs into another resulting in the death of a couple. Talwar, a successful businessman, is charged with murder. So what will the court verdict be? The judge stuns all stating that Ranbeer will have to look after the four children of the deceased until the youngest turns 18 years of age. Ranbeer hates kids, as he is still living in the past of his lost childhood (his mother died when he was very young). The kids are out for revenge and God has a meeting with his angels to bring sanity to this situation.

Down comes an Angel, (Geeta) Rani Mukherjee, on a cycle in the form of a governess, to help the two warring parties reason out with a little bit of love, and a little bit of magic from her side. How the kids make up with Ranbeer and how Ranbeer reconsiders is what the movie is all about. Yes, your mind does race back to the 1993 Aamir Khan-Juhi Chawla starrer HUM HAI RAHI PYAAR KE. So what's new? Kunal has made intelligent use of animation and special effects to add a zing to the proceedings. Kids are going to love it.

Ameesha Patel in a guest appearance is Ranbeer's girlfriend. To be fair to the girl, she plays her part well and looks gorgeous in her eye-catching outfits. However, this being a children's movie and considering a lot many kids will want to see this movie, Kunal could have gone easy on the skin show. With parents for company, the kids are sure to squirm in their seats if not the other way round.

All the kids put in a good performance. Saif Ali Khan lends able support. The chemistry between Rani Mukherjee and Saif Ali Khan is still intact and they have some cute moments.

The music is nothing to shout about but overall, a decent fare, which the kids will love to watch.

Ratings : 3/5

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic
27 Jun 2008, 2022 hrs IST , Nikhat Kazmi , TNN

Critic Rating: *** 1/2

THODA rona dhona. Thoda tweeny pranks. And thoda special effects. Ten minutes into the movie and you know what's up next for the suave biz tycoon Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali Khan), who walks out of award ceremonies (of course, with awards) even before his name is actually called out for. Phew! Now that's what we call a poor little rich boy! Cut to the tale of four sorry kids who've lost their parents, courtesy the hit-and-run Mr Tycoon. Of course, he ends up playing court-appointed-legal guardian to the kids. As for the kids, they find shelter and naturally it's their chance to take panga with their unwanted foster pop. Not to miss out is Ameesha, who in a way nails the silly fashionista part, not just in her skimpy outifts, but also her blind faith in astrology. Makes for some lazy lamhe with a welcome change of image by Ms Goody Two Shoes!

But hey, no magic here till now. So where is the magic? Well, the magic actually starts working in the second half when angel-turned-nanny-turned- didi Rani Mukerji, aka angel Geeta, makes the tycoon and the kids realise the world is but a beautiful place. And how does she do it in that house of badmashi, bullying, back stabbing amidst the bratpack of four kids, Vasisht (Akshat Chopra), Avantika, Aditi and Iqbal? First, by playing almost wifey to Saif (though not one for real) in an authorative way, as her heavenly English accents gets lost with some earthy punjabisation. And then with the kids by flying her way through literally every problem -- the sea, swimming pool, forest, jungles, museum... You name it and she's zooming ahead, with a song and a smile! For this celestial being belongs to the heavens, abode to God (Rishi Kapoor), who has the toughest task of all... He needs to make humans learn to live happily ever, just like the fairy tale.

Kunal Kohli turns his attention from seemingly adult tales -- Hum Tum, Fanaa -- to a desification of Mary Poppins. And like his earlier films, he displays a strong hold on the medium, despite shifting gears to sentimental family drama. Saif's good, Rani's commendable, but the show stealers are the babalog who carry the emotional parts to near-perfection on their frail shoulders. Truly, it's the age of WHIZ KID in Indian cinema!

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic
Planet Bollywood Review
Rating: 7/10

Learning from their disastrous attempts at other genres, Yash Raj Films gets back to wholesome family flicks. And director Kunal Kohli steps up seeming to have the answer to all the woes of the banner by throwing together a kiddie's flick, that has a ‘thoda’ of everything and still seems a fresh package of a rather old wine. So a thoda of Sound of Music or Mary Poppins never did anyone any harm. Nor will a 'thoda' dose of recent flicks like Nanny McPhee or Lemony Snickets. So why not stir it all in the melting pot and bring forth Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic?
**Spoiler Alert**- The following few paragraphs describe events from the movie

Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali Khan) is a pretty successful businessman. Though he has been pretty much the achiever at everything he has done since childhood, he has only stood to lose the people he loves. And this loner’s life takes the plunge when he ends up killing a couple (the Walias) in a road accident.

However the twist is that instead of a prison sentence, the judge hands out a controversial judgement whereby the accused Ranbeer is given the complete responsibility of the four kids of the deceased couple. Ranbeer realizes that this is not going to be an easy task especially with the foursome out to seek revenge. Even his bimbo girlfriend Malaika (Amisha Patel) ends up failing to win the hearts of the kids.

That is when God himself (Rishi Kapoor), dressed in all white, decides that he shall dispatch his angel down to earth to help out the kids. And he finds no better candidate than the bubbly Geeta (Rani Mukherjee). Now it is up to Geeta to pose as a nanny and ensure that she completes her task of getting Ranbeer and the kids together!

**End of Spoiler Alert**

Director Kohli has made a splendid kiddie’s flick, one that will surely be lapped up by those below the age of 10. And the film has enough to keep those accompanying them entertained. Those in between these age groups however are not going to derive the same amount of enjoyment. Barring the ‘Lazy Lamhe’ number, Kohli has ensured it stays rooted in the fantasy realm in which the narration is switched around. Although that one song does stand out like a sore thumb, being the most popular number from the film, I guess it should not bother many.

The script and narration is straight forward and nothing exceptional is experimented with here. You do not have crass humour or the unwarranted subplots here in the name of Bollywood masala. But then again, that certain charm associated with movies like Mr India and Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke is missing…the kind that makes these movies a repeat viewing success for viewers of all ages.

What saves the day for the mature audience at the end of day is the acting. Saif Ali Khan plays his part perfectly and shows how much he has evolved as an actor. Saif is certainly at ease here and fits the bill. Also after crying her heart out in recent outings like Baghban and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Rani Mukherjee is bound to be received with open arms as the bubbly angel who just cannot cry. That in itself is a welcome relief and gives Rani, an extremely powerful performer, a chance to chill away with this role. Once again, even Rani makes it look like a walk in the park and to top it, like a cherry comes the on screen chemistry between the Hum Tum pair.

But the real life line of this film are the kids and that is where Kunal Kohli has kept his word and not shown the kids as the typically irritating ‘all-too-smart’ kids that run havoc on the Indian screens. This foursome play it out as normal kids and therefore connect a lot better with the viewers, especially the youngster who plays the role of Iqbal. He walks away with some of the better scenes in the film. As for a Kohli favourite, Rishi Kapoor, he comes out decent enough as God in Jeetu ji’s white attire. But then again he is no Morgan Freeman. Amisha Patel plays the bimbo part perfectly and gets a chance to sizzle away in the ‘Lazy Lamhe’ song.

And what is commendable is the fact that the makers never bragged about it, instead they let the magic take over onscreen. That then brings us to the music department which is extremely strong. To begin with the trio of Shankar Ehsaan Loy re-unite with lyricist Prasoon Joshi and recreate, to a great extent, the magic they brought to Taare Zameen Par. That is followed up well by the background score from Sandeep Chowta which is effective despite resorting to Hollywood-ish clichés.

This is the kind of movie that has a certain vintage Disney charm and feel to it and we all know that in this day and age of bikini clad hot bods and bare chested dancer boys, not many Bollywood movies can aspire to have that quality. But Kohli seems to prefer sticking to the basics to come up with a sweet and endearing movie. And thankfully, it is low on melodrama too. So what you waiting for, take those kids and treat them to Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. This one is for them, let them enjoy the magic and fantasy!

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic
Rating: 3 Stars.

STARRING
Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Ameesha Patel, Rishi Kapoor, Shriya Sharma, Sharat Saxena, Razzak Khan, Mahesh Thakur and others.

DIRECTION

Kunal Kohli

STORY

The story revolves around the life of a rich business man Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali Khan) and four orphan children who are forced to stay with Ranbeer by the order of a court verdict. Ranbeer has unfortunately lost his beloved ones and living alone for the time being. But these orphan children hate him and do not want to stay with him. Ranbeer, too, is not very fond of them and avoids even eye contact with them.

One day, children pray to god to free them from the unpleasant condition of staying with Ranbeer and the god sends angel Geeta(Rani Mukerji) on a mission to unite the orphans and Ranbeer. Geeta is a childlike, lovely angel, who comes cycling down a rainbow to Ranbeer’s house and starts acting like a new nanny to the children. What happens after Geeta enters the house and how she handles the situation forms the remaining part of the film.

PERFORMANCE

Saif Ali Khan has done a terrific job and looks natural in the character of Ranbeer Talwar Saif’s interaction with the kids in the second half is especially worth mentioning and takes the film to another level. Saif’s way of bonding with each kid individually is just superb.

Rani Mukerji, in the part of Geeta, does a fair job and fully justifies her casting in the role. Her effort at winning the love and affection of kids looks very good. However, her dress needed more attention from the director.

Ameesha Patel’s character seems to be just an add on and does not contribute to the progress of the story. Nonetheless, she looks sexy in the number ‘Lazy Lamhe’ and makes most of it.

The child artistes have done superbly in the film and the kid who has enacted the role of a Sikh is especially adorable. His act of ‘Main Nikla Gadi Leke’ from Sunny Deol’s Gadar looks very entertaining. Rishi Kapoor passes the muster, while others provide able support to the main cast of the film.

The direction of Kunal Kohli has matured over the years and he has shown this quality in relating this simple, uncomplicated story with dexterity. The director is not only successful in extracting the best from Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, but also from the little kids who are the real heroes of this film. Kunal Kohli has used emotional scenes to move the audiences, but in a very subtle way without resorting to usual rona dhona, associated with family films.

However, the music from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is not up to the mark and fails to enthuse the audience. Only one number ‘Pyaar Ke Liye’ is likely to be popular with the masses. The cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee is good and the audience would love it.

STARDUST VERDICT

The film has been made with the aim of providing simple and clean entertainment to the family audiences and is likely to succeed in that at multiplexes. However, at single screen theatres and at smaller centers, where demand is more for action and sex, it is likely to face a slow start. A good fare.

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic : Movie Review
27th June 2008 23.00 IST
By Naresh K. Deoshi

All cinematic blasphemies can be forgiven when you see a delightful, heart-winning tale filled with fun, frolic, fantasy and some tear-jerking drama unfold on the screen. That’s what Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is.

So even if you think for a moment that director Kunal Kohli has blasphemed when you see a squeaky clean Rishi Kapoor playing God who uses state-of-the-art technology to see the workings of His creation (read human life) from heaven that is just above the clouds, you accept it, knowing that it is a fantasy Bollywood flick, and that too by Kunal Kohli.

Instead of blaming Kohli for being far-fetched in his imagination, you prefer to lean back and prod the long lost child inside you to resurface and enjoy the film.

Before getting carried away by my childish excitement, let me give an outline of the story.

Ranvir Talwar ( Saif Ali Khan ) is a self-made man who grew up as an orphan. He has got everything – a flourishing business empire, a sensuous bimbo in tow ( Amisha Patel ), a swanky bungalow and, not to forget, a constant frown on his face. But he’s got no time.

Ranvir’s life changes after a car accident in which a couple dies because of his mistake. The court, instead of kicking him off to prison, gives an unusual verdict. Ranvir has to be the guardian of the four orphans of the dead couple and take care of them until the youngest of them becomes an adult.

But the kids hate Ranvir. And Ranvir feels no different towards them. Put up in the house of their parents’ killer, the kids plot revenge.

It would take nothing less than a divine intervention to foster peace and love between Ranvir and the vengeful tots. The good God himself takes the trouble of summoning one of his favourite fairies, Geeta ( Rani Mukherjee ), to go to the world of humans and do His work.

And down she comes, cycling on a rainbow (like some lost sister of Lance Armstrong) and straight into the life of Ranvir and his four cute ill-wishers. What happens thereafter better be seen than written about.

The most commendable thing about ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ is that it makes the most ludicrous of scenes engaging and fun to watch. Be it the fairy (as the nanny of the kids) turning the boring National Museum into a magical, living theatre of history, or the four naughty kids ruining the poolside party of Ranvir’s skimpily clad squeeze (Amisha) – you relish it all with the buoyancy of an adolescent yourself.

Besides humour, the film is also high on melodrama. I know it has almost become a dreadful word – thanks to many a weepy Bollywood movies – but the tear-jerking scenes in TPTM don’t pinch you like other run-of-the-mill sob tales. You bear them, at times with suppressed embarrassment of being seen moist-eyed by the fellow sitting next to you in theatre.

‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ does not belong to any one actor. Speaking in cricket parlance, it’s a team effort.

Saif Ali Khan does superb as the frowning, scowling, busy-as-a-bee businessman who gradually transforms into a loving, caring, doting guardian. Rani Mukherjee is pretty good as the blabbermouth fairy who performs magical feats as if she was doing something trivial, like playing carrom. And it is a great relief to see her play a character that doesn’t weep.

Amisha Patel is convincing as the minimally clad, dumb bimbo with a superficial accent. The kids are all right. The sardar kid (Iqbal) wins you over with his humour.

Kunal Kohli’s direction has many rough edges. For instance, his style of shot composition needs a great deal of improvement. The film’s music is also ho-hum.

Apart from this, ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ is pretty enjoyable. It has many engaging moments. My favourite is the one in which Iqbal tells Ranvir that he doesn’t want to be a Sikh. Another favourite of mine comes at the end. I’m not sure if the director intended it. But on a street in Hollywood, the camera captures two delightful words written on a wall. The words are: Buck Fush. Written on an American street, it doesn’t take much imagination to figure out what they mean.

Rating: ***1/2

RANI LEADS BEST PERFORMANCES

By Eye TV India Bureau

http://ww.smashits.com/news/bollywood/movi...rformances.html
===============================

'Laga Chunri Mein Daag', 'Aaja Nachle' and to an extent 'Tashan' too failing to hit the box office like its other movies the Yash Raj Films is back this time with 'Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic', a children centric subject. Maybe the banner thought of attracting the special audience and not let the school summer vacation go waste this year. Besides, Yash Raj has repeated the lead pair of its earlier movie 'Ta Ra Rum Pum' - Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee. Not only that Yash Raj Films has even used the same name of Saif Ali's character - Ranbeer - in this movie as in 'Ta Ra Rum Pum'.

The movie's story is somewhat strange inasmuch it revolves around a businessman who accidentally kills a man leaving four kids to survive. The judge punishes Ranbeer (Saif Ali Khan), to look after the deceased's kids or face the prison term. The children in turn harass the culprit's several relatives who are asked to look after them. They come to Ranbeer's home and meet his striking girlfriend Malaika (Amisha Patel). The latter tries to be friend them, but the kids take an instant dislike to her, who is a kind of vamp; fashionable to the extent of wearing revealing clothes and talking non-stop on the phone!

The children want to revenge their parents' death and aren't happy with Amisha though Ranbeer gels well with bubble-headed Amisha . Then, enters Rishi Kapoor in the sky, painting clouds and holding a meeting with his lady angels. He entrusts his favorite and most "badtameez pari" Geeta (Rani Mukherji). She arrives on earth to help the kids out, and wins over their hearts. She wins Ranbeer's heart , too. But, being a pari ( fairy) she has to choose either her magical powers or love. The four children named Akshat Chopra, Shriya Sharma, Rachit Sidana and Ayushi Berman render their roles excellently well ; they act as little adults with problems, confusion and feelings of their own, usually lacking in other movies.

Saif plays impressively, Rani excels all and leads the cast . In fact, she carries the movie on her shoulders. But alas, the actress is made to wear the heaviest clothes, presumably to look like a pari. Her cycling down a rainbow and floating on water are sure feats to elicit shrieks from kids. Amisha is lucky that way and plays a supremely funny character deserving kudos .

Thus, the movie bears the title of 'Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic'. Songs like Bulbula where Geeta transforms the moon into a boat and Beete Kal Se that has the fairy and the kids in the museum with a dancing, toothy dinosaur are superbly picturised. However, her asking the kids to imagine participating in a game show where points are awarded for every good deed like a sort of law of karma remains a mystery.

Sandeep Chowta has provided peppy background music. Shankar Ehsaan Loy's music based on Prasoon Joshi's lyrics is excellent. So is Dileep Subramanium's sound designing. Kunal Kohli and Rohena Gera's dialogues are nice too though with few exceptions. Overall, the movie is worth watching, especially because of Rani Mukherjee's natural performance. Kunal Kohli's direction to a Yash Raj banner movie has indeed succeeded in getting the best performances out of its talented cast though their characters fall much short of freshness in their roles.

Review: TPTM comes as ‘Thoda ‘money’ Thoda ‘rescue’ for YRF

Spicezee Bureau

Kunal Kohli’s much-awaited Saif-Rani starrer ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ released this Friday to recreate the somewhat lost magic of Yash Raj Films. After the debacle of Yash Raj’s ‘Tashan’, ‘Aaja Nachle’ and ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’, TPTM sure comes as a breather for the banner as well as for audience.

Kunal, the director of the hit ‘Hum Tum’, has indeed made a good effort to get the team together again to recreate some ‘Pyaar’ and ‘Magic’ for Yash Raj. TPTM, led by Saif and Rani, has Rishi Kapoor playing God, who played Saif’s father in ‘Hum Tum’.

TPTM is the story of a successful businessman Saif Ali Khan (Ranbeer Talwar), an angel Rani Mukerji (Geeta) and four innocent kids. The film opens with its title track capturing Ranbeer’s ‘not so happy’ childhood moments and instantly after the song, he meets with a real bad accident and ends up killing a couple. Ranbeer, the businessman, is charged with murder. But shockingly, the judge being truly bighearted, orders Ranbeer to look after the four young kids of the deceased couple, until the youngest of them turns 18.

Ranbeer happens to hate kids, his own childhood being not a pleasant one- his mother died when he was very young. The situation has it that the kids are, obviously, set for revenge, when God has a meeting with his angels to bring peace to all five.

There we see Rani (Geeta, the angel), after a long time and with some extra pounds, as a nanny on a cycle to help the two warring parties to settle for love, with some magic from her side. The film talks about how the kids make up with Ranbeer.

The kids have put up a good performance. Rani Mukherjee and Saif Ali Khan have their intact sharing some cute moments in the film. Ameesha Patel plays a cameo as Ranbeer's girlfriend. The lady looks stunning throughout, especially in her eye-catching bikini number.

On does tend to remember Emma Thompson starrer Nanny McPhee but the comparisons are not that accurate really.

In all ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ is sure a treat for kids, with some fairly satisfactory direction, and good performances by the entire star cast. So, this one’s not a blockbuster but undoubtedly a little stress-buster for Yash Raj Films!

Two and a half stars to 'Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic'

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic Review

http://www.nowrunning.com/Movie/Reviews/Mo...aspx?movie=5256

--------------------------------------------------

By Ashok Nayak Fri, 27 Jun 2008 Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic stars Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Amisha Patel and four kids. Amisha Patel's is more of a special appearance than a full fledged role; she has a song and a few dialogues. TPTM is directed by Kunal Kohli, who has directed movies like "Mujhse Dosti Karogi", "Hum Tum" and "Fanaa". His last 2 movies were super hits; can he deliver a hat trick?

Ranbeer Talwar (Saif Ali Khan), one of the country's top industrialists, is a loner, not by choice, but because he lost everyone he ever loved. He is now faced with a very peculiar and uncomfortable situation. In a rare and landmark court verdict, he is to look after 4 orphan children. The orphans hate him and want revenge from him. The children do not want to live with a man they hate; he too cannot face them or look them in the eye for certain reasons. Their life together is very unhappy, one day they pray to God for help and he does help them. He sends his most mischievous, childlike, lovable angel to the rescue, with a mission to bring Ranbeer and the kids together. Geeta (Rani Mukerji) comes bicycling down a rainbow... and bursts into Ranbeer's house as the self-proclaimed new nanny.

And then starts the roller coaster ride of fun, emotions, magic and love.

"Hum Tum" was a fun movie. "Fanaa" was brilliant in parts. Now with TPTM, Kunal Kohli has managed to pull off a kiddo film. The execution of the thin, almost non-existent plotline is good... The problem with TPTM is the first half, its slow at times, takes a long time to gather momentum and picks up only after interval. The kids would enjoy the first half, a lot of SFX and a few lessons here and there for the kids, while the second half has a bit in it for everyone, a spicy hot song shot on Amisha Patel and Saif Ali Khan (Lazy Lamhe), romance and a lot of fun.

Music of TPTM doesn't match previous Kunal Kohli movies, Nihaal Ho Gayi is good. Rani Mukherji wears only one dress throughout the movie! Her performance in the second half of TPTM is good. Saif Ali Khan is brilliant throughout, a restrained, powerful performance. The kids do well; the Paanchvi Paas girl is adorable. Amisha Patel is HOT HOT HOT. Rishi Kapoor doesn't have much scope, he looks very old, and the French beard just doesn't suit him.

To sum things up, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is a fun movie. It's strongly recommended for kids, the rest, do give it a try.
