Helloooo :tumbleweed: is anybody here B)
Well I will be there soon and been lying awake at night wondering about minor things you locals may be able to help me with.... Do you tip taxi drivers? I'll need a PAYG mobile phone, are there any networks to avoid or recommend? I use Vodaphone here Are the supermarkets open on Sundays? What sort of references might I need for a rental property? Would the bond have to be in cash or do you think it could go on a credit card (hoping my car will sell and I won't have to worry :o ) Once we're settled we thought we might get a dog, are dogs allowed to walk on beaches and in the parks...I've heard a lot of National Parks don't allow dogs which would be a pain in the arse trying to get someone to look after it each time we wanted to go away for a few days  Thanks :flowers: I will propably think of more before I get there. |

G'day Karen, Unfortunately, it is quiet around here as the forum is fairly new but, hopefully, as more people find it, more will chat together generally. ;) You're always welcome to start off threads and ask away with those questions.
Tipping taxi drivers (or anyone for that matter) is not expected but it is appreciated. Many people simply pay the requested amount, others tip; so the choice is yours. What I usually do is take it up to the nearest round figure, e.g. if the fare is, say, $22 - $23, I'd hand over $25 and tell them to keep the change.
There are plenty of options for a PAYG mobile phone here. Some have greater area coverage than others, so it would depend on whether you intend to be moving around the state/country or if you're just likely to use the phone in the city areas. Have a look at the following links for more information: Phonechoice Office of Fair Trading Qld Australian Communications and Media Authority - toolkit Personally, at least to start with, I'd stick to either Telstra or Optus (the main two providers here) until you get a feel for what your needs will be in the future. ;)
Yes, usually 9am 'til 6pm.
Written references are always best. I don't think you could pay a bond by credit card, however you could do a cash withdrawal from a credit card and pay cash for the bond that way - not a good way to do it though as cash withdrawals attract higher interest rates.
Most councils have "off leash" parks and other areas in which you can walk your dogs. They also have to be registered with the council. I'd suggest that you have a look at the Cairns City Council website for all available information on owning a dog in Cairns. :) I hope all of that helps, but if you have further questions, we're here to help! |

Hi just for info we visited Yaps kennels when we were last over in cairns they were lovely and very helpful to our family (charity run kennel) who got a dog from there. We are trying to bring ours with us. shame there is no quarantine there so will have to be sydney we think unless anyon knows otherwise. Yaps have a website so you can view the dogs they have. My daughter decided she wants to work there shes 12

Anyone have any thoughts about Kamerunga in Cairns, it's not a suburb I know much about. Is there good public transport into the city... B) |

Kamerunga is just across the road from me. :omg: Very nice it is too. Not a large suburb but damned confusing to work out exactly what it consists of. I think it's mainly cane fields. From what I can see it's a mixture of older properties. Pole homes in the trees and and one estate by the Peace Lutheren private college and one bit away from the rest leading to the fringes of the Barron river. If the Barron floods parts of Kamerunga and Caravonica will go under and I will be looking down on a flood plain. Public transport stops at the crossroads that separate Kamerunga from Redlynch where I live. Not sure but I don't think it calls down into Kamerunga as such but it's not a long walk to the bus stop. |
