<worst> Nightmare, Call to Sam Teague

[Shephard Dixon]

Oh shit. Shep had been in his car just driving for the last twenty minutes looking for Samantha's car. He had to find Hayden. She needed to be at the hospital. Dean needed her to be there. Shep knew he should be there, too. Anna was there with Dean all by herself. It had been wrong of him to leave her there alone. The fact of the matter was, though, he'd seen Dean go down this road once before, only this time, it was far worse than before. He simply didn't have it in him to sit there at the hospital and watch Dean die. He had to do something. He had to be doing something. Looking for Hayden was his excuse to be doing something.

Shep wasn't sure what it was that had made him think about the other Teague sibling. Sam had been out of town for awhile now - since after Troy Anderson had attacked Narissa in her apartment when Sam had been in charge of watching her. He'd simply disappeared. Shep could understand that, though. How many times after he'd blown a case had he desired to just disappear?

Shep pulled out his phone and scrolled through his contacts. He'd gotten any and all important phone numbers from Dean in the case of an emergency, just as Dean's phone currently held all of Shep's emergency contact numbers. He found Sam's listing easily enough and pushed the button to dial Sam's phone. He prayed silently that Sam would pick up as he listened to the phone ring.

Sam had just gotten done with a ride and was brushing down the horse when his phone started to ring. He hadn't heard from anyone in a week and pulled out his phone seeing the id read Shep. Sam opened his phone placing it to his ear and answered, "Hey Shep...what's up?" He wasn't sure what to say since he couldn't figure out what Shep would be calling him for unless Dean had belowed himself to getting Shep to beg him to come home.

Shep didn't realize until Sam actually answered the phone that he had no idea what to tell the younger of the Teague men. Shep took a deep breath and finally decided there wasn't much of a way to ease into news like this. He just needed to say it.

"Sam, listen to me. You need to get back here. Dean needs you."

Okay, so he hadn't exactly just jumped right into as he'd thought he would. How do you tell someone that their only brother is in a hospital bed possibly dying? Shep knew that Sam wouldn't just say 'Okay' and be on the first mode of transportation back to Tree Hill from wherever the hell it was that he was hiding out, but Shep still knew that Sam needed to know what was happening.

Sam couldn't help but chuckle into the phone a little bit. Dean had been trying to get him to come back for a week and a half now, but Sam just needed a break to clear his head after he had failed on the job and he needed time alone with Raelyn. Sam paused for a moment and then spoke, "So my brother's stooped to having you call to get me to come back...listen I will be back in like a week. I just need some more time to get my head on straight. Tell him I'm fine and I'll be back soon alright." Sam shook his head thinking of what Dean had to do to get Shep to call him.

Shep should have guessed that Sam would think this was just a trick to try to get him home. Dean had been trying for days now to get his younger brother to return. Dean was just worried about him. Shep understood the need to get away, and Dean did, too, but Dean also understood the need for family when something had gone wrong.

"Sam, listen to me, it's not like that." Shep had to stop and clear his throat before he could say what he needed to say. Dammit, why did this have to happen now?!

"Dean's in the hospital. In Chapel Hill. He had another heart attack, Sam. It's bad."

The emotions got the better of him and he had to stop there. The street lights around him blurred out from the tears forming in his eyes and Shep had to pull his car over to the side of the road for the moment while he tried to pull himself back together.

Sam smirked when Shep said it was not like that, but before Sam could get another word in. Shep added something that blew him right away. Sam had thought his heart had stopped right then and lost all his air in him. Sam held onto the edge to hold his balance. Sam pressed her lips together and knew he needed to say something. Sam felt the tears swelling in his eyes, "Dean." All he had to do was say his name and the tears slipped down his cheeks. "I'm coming for him...I just need to know how bad." He really wanted to know if his brother was dying or not.

Shep had to sit for a minute and breathe - just breathe. He had to tell Sam the truth, but he wasn't sure he could say the words out loud. Dean was his best friend - had been for a very long time. It was all too much for him to be faced with the thought of losing him again.

Shep finally cleared his throat again and forced himself to speak, though his voice was quiet and very strained.

"He's still unconscious. He's stable and 'holding his own', what ever the hell that means. But right now, there's no significant improvement. If something doesn't change, and soon..." Again, Shep had to take a deep breath. "We could lose him, Sam."

Sam stopped in front of his car and had to lean against it for support and the bottom of the world just fell out beneath him. Sam pressed his lips together and felt a knot in the back of his throat. Sam reached up and wiped his eyes from the tears pouring down his cheeks. Sam took a deep breath and got into the car and then said, "He's not going too...we're not losing him...all he needs is his pain in the ass brother to come tell him get his shit together...he will be fine..." Sam pressed his lips together and that's all he could face he couldn't dare face him with the thoughts of losing his brother...no he wouldn't let himself believe that he might lose his brother.

Shep could understand and appreciate Sam's determined words, but he could hear in Sam's voice the same fear that coursed through his own body. Shep tried to keep himself together long enough to tell Sam the rest of the story. He needed to know everything.

"He's at Chapel Hill Memorial, ICU. They're only allowing a few people in at a time right now. The girl he's taking care of, Jacee, is staying in the room with him." Shep chose not to elaborate on that for the moment. Sam had enough to deal with right now. "Your sister is missing. She snuck out of the safe house sometime today. She doesn't know what's happened yet. We've got every blue and white in Chapel Hill and Tree Hill looking for her. We'll find her."
