Douglas glanced over at her when she said she'd drop it. He was so grateful to her for understanding him and how he worked. He'd tell her everything, eventually, and she knew and understood that. He appreciated that she was willing to give him his space right now until he could process everything.
"Thanks D," he said quietly. When she asked him to promise that he would leave Robert Chasez up to her and the authorities, Douglas pressed his lips together and stared out the window away from Dylan. He wasn't sure he could make that promise to her, and he just wasn't the type of guy to make promises that he couldn't keep.
Douglas took a deep breath and finally looked back over at her. He reached out his hand and wrapped it around the back of her neck, giving the tense muscles there a slight squeeze. "I'll promise you that I won't kill him." He gave her a big, toothy smile, trying to lighten the mood. At least he was trying to make jokes, but the bottom line was, he couldn't promise that he wouldn't hurt Robert if the two came face to face with each other.
Douglas dropped his hand and again turned to look out the window beside him. "I won't promise you to stay out of it if he shows up and tries to hurt those kids, D. I can't do that, and I won't make you promises I can't keep."
