Jesse McCartney yaks about Dream Street's success
BY JANIS CAMPBELL, Yak's Corner Published Friday, November 23rd, 2001 Success is no dream for Jesse McCartney and the members of Dream Street. The guy group released its first CD in July and has already sold more than 500,000 copies. This month, the guys released a video and DVD featuring the song "It Happens Every Time," plus a behind-the-scenes look at the band ($19.95 on DVD; $10.98 on video). We yakked with Jesse by phone recently. Despite his busy schedule, he's still attending a regular high school in Westchester, N.Y., and trying to have a normal life. When we talked, he was getting ready to go to the homecoming dance. All five of the guys in Dream Street are talented performers with backgrounds in musical theater. At 14, Jesse's the youngest member, but he's been performing for years. "I've wanted to do this since I was 7," Jesse says. Jesse got his start in community theater when he was 7. He tried out for the title role in the musical "Oliver" and got the part. By age 9, he'd been in three community theater shows and was ready to get serious about his career. His parents hired an agent for him, and Jesse tried out for a part in his first Broadway show, "The King and I." "It was my first audition ever, and I got the part," Jesse said. "I was booked to tour across the country with the show. I was in 190-some shows!" About three years ago, when Jesse heard about the audition for Dream Street, he took some tap and jazz lessons. He was one of the lucky five chosen from about 250 who auditioned. Jesse, a high school freshman, lives with his mom and dad, younger brother and sister in the suburb of Westchester, near New York City. He has a cat named Oliver. He says high school is "so much better than middle school." His favorite subject is math. Right now, Jesse usually spends two to four nights a week rehearsing with the band. They work on their music and moves from about 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on practice days. The guys also have photo shoots, interviews and promotional events to fit in between classes and homework. The band has been performing on weekends for the past two years but will go on its first big tour this winter. Jesse says he's excited about riding on a cool tour bus and taking time off from school. For Jesse, Dream Street's success is becoming a reality. -------------------- .:!i*Reality is a nice place, but I wouldn't like to live there*i!:.
