Torchlight was released yesterday, 27 October 2009. It's a game by Runic Games, the team consisting largely of developers who created the first Diablo, including it's audio score creator, Matt Uelmen.
This game can be best described as Diablo++. The plot is your basic 'Destroy the evil under the ground', you get a choice of 3 characters/classes, oodles of monsters and loot, a solid RPG game mechanic and great overall quality.
What's different?
Your inventory doesn't suck anymore, while all the items are still with the old Diablo flavor ( sockets, uniques, specials ). You get 30 slots, and one item will only take up a single slot.
The character can switch between weapon sets, meaning that by pressing W, you can switch between dual wielded blades, or guns, depending on what you use and if the situation requires it. The additional set of weapons don't take up inventory slots, either.
You can also have a pet ( A cat, dog, or imaginary ). Your pet can learn 2 spells, has 2 ring equip slots and a necklace slot, and an inventory as large as yours, and you can move your loot around between the two inventories as you please. You can also send your pet to town to sell everything it's carrying. While you're in the dungeon. And it's a general companion to you in the meantime.
I don't have much else to say right now, because i've barely started on the game, but it's a really good piece of work. Buy it ( Steam or Retail ), or snatch it from your favorite P2P network if you can't do that yet.
More to come, soon.
