I don't know if anyone here has seen Gunbuster but one character strikingly resembles Meryl while another Vash. I thought this would be something interesting for us to contemplate, that series was back in the 80's, character inspiration perhaps, who knows, just thought it was cool. What does everyone think? Here's one pick I found, working on finding the other.

Here's that other guy, I don't think these are very good, but picks are hard to find.
http://www.toponeraegunbuster.com/toren-cel01.gif This page has a few pics but you'll know when you see him, even more ironically, HE'S WEARING RED!!! But beware, I think all of that fine print is summaries and SPOILERS!! But don't worry the print is really small. http://www.bandaivisual.us/gunbuster1/dvd.html |

That's hilarious - I haven't seen the series myself - but those pictures really do match in a way. Are the character types similar too?

Not really, the series is very serious so they're kind of boring compared to the Trigun characters (bias, can't help it). However, it is a good series for what it is, somewhat of a classic depending on who you ask. It reflects Anno's style, whether you like him or not. Generally serious and depressing, like Evangelion. Although Trigun goes this direction, Gunbuster is almost always this way from beginning to end.

Makes me interested anyway - even if perhaps I won't go out and try to watch it right away - but maybe sit down and watch it at a convention if someone plays it or something like that.

I'm bringing this topic out of the closet tonight since I just got to watch the Gunbuster movie the other day - unfortunately it didn't have much of...what was his name, Smith? It was very amusing to see this character who looks like Vash - I mean, except his 'blond' hair was more gray, but with that blond patch in it...but he just ACTED like Vash and had the same kind of eyebrows! I instantly thought about this post the other day and said to myself - yup, Nash was right, this series does remind me of Trigun. The other people in the room said to me that they wondered if it could even be a pre-cursor to it.

Thanks Milly, that makes me feel special. Did you get a good look at Amano post time-skip? I'm pretty sure Nightow got some inspiration from the character design. It's not really surprising, Gunbuster is a classic. I could still be wrong though.

Oh, and yeah his name was Smith Toren or was it the other way around. I've only heard of connections being made between Top Gun and Gunbuster.

Omg, I seriously never realized that! That's Kazumi after the time skip right? I can tell it's Episode 8 due to the lack of colour. Have you seen the sequel to the second Aim for the Top!, Diebuster? This post has been edited by Wavecrasher on Jun 13 2009, 12:53 AM |
