The photo above, from today's entry in Yoshihiro Nishimura's blog, appears to be of the screenplay for his Hell Driver.

Here's some information on Hell Driver from the December 11, 2009 entry in Marc Walkow's Outcast Cinema blog: "HELL DRIVER casting ¶ One of the things TOKYO GORE POLICE director Yoshihiro Nishimura was happy to talk about during his visit to this summer's New York Asian Film Festival was an upcoming project of his about a high school girl who's also a zombie fighter. Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan, this is another Nikkatsu / Sushi Typhoon film, due to shoot in the spring for a summer release worldwide (again, expect a lot of festival play). I was lucky enough to sit in on auditions for the leading role of Kika, the girl whose own heart is ripped out by her mother before becoming a world-class zombie-killer (and apparently an undead or cyborg one?)."

The Japanese title of Hell Driver is "Nihon bundan: heru doraibâ". (Note how Japan is divided in the photo above.) The movie is scheduled to start shooting on Saturday.

BTW, Nishimura and his Nishimura Eizo Co. Ltd. (Y.K. Nishimura Eizô) were responsible for the special make-up effects for Katsuya Matsumura's All Night Long: Anyone Would Have Done (All Night Long: daredemo yokatta) - a.k.a. "All Night Long 6".

Above is a still from Hell Driver (Nihon bundan: heru doraibâ). The movie began shooting on May 15th. Tak Sakaguchi (Sakaguchi Taku) and Yûdai Yamaguchi's aforementioned Yakuza Weapon (Gokudô heiki) began shooting the following day. Noboru Iguchi's aforementioned Denjin Zaborger: The Movie (Denjin Zabôgâ: gekijô-ban) is now in post-production.

BTW, if you haven't already done so, be sure to watch the three-minute (3:17) long "special 'splatter version' teaser" for Nishimura, Sakaguchi, and Iguchi's Mutant Girls Squad (Sentô shôjo: chi no tekkamen densetsu)!

Nishimura wrote in an entry in his blog two days ago that Eihi Shiina has a major role in Hell Driver. Cay Izumi (Izumi Kai) apparently is also in the movie.

BTW, Nishimura and his Nishimura Eizo were also responsible for the special make-up effects for the latest movie by Sion Sono (Sono Shion), Cold Fish (Tsumetai nettaigyo) - another Nikkatsu Corporation (Nikkatsu K.K.) production under its Sushi Typhoon label. Cold Fish was "inspired by true events" which, according to the Japan Today article "Top court upholds death penalty for dog breeder, ex-wife over murders" (June 6, 2009), are "known as the 'Saitama serial murders of dog lovers'" (journalist Jake Adelstein refers to them in Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan (pp. 102-135) as "The Saitama Dog Lover Serial Disappearances"); the convicted killers in the real-life case are Gen Sekine (68) and his ex-wife Hiroko Kazama (53).

There are twenty-four behind-the-scenes photos from Hell Driver on Yasuhiko Fukuda's blog. (Be forewarned that in the eighteenth photo, Maki Mizui (viewer discretion is advised) - formerly Sayako Nakoshi - is wearing nothing more than body paint on her chest.) The movie is now in post-production.

I interviewed Nishimura a year ago and he gave me some details about this one off the record that made it sound great - a political zombie satire on North and South Korea. Nishimura tends to add a strong social and political element into his films a la Verhoeven, so I can't wait to see what he's done here.

An English-subtitled theatrical trailer for Sono's Cold Fish has been added to YouTube.

Here's a synopsis for Cold Fish from the sales flyer for the movie: "Shamoto runs a small tropical fish shop. His second wife, Taeko, does not get along with his daughter, Mitsuko, and this worries him. He also feels somehow unfulfilled and dissatisfied with what his life has become. One day Mitsuko is caught shoplifting at a grocery store. There they meet a friendly man named Murata, who helps to settle things between Mitsuko and the store manager. Since Murata also runs a tropical fish shop, Shamoto establishes a bond with him and they become friends; Mitsuko even begins working for Murata and living at this house, to avoid conflicts with her stepmother. ¶ What Shamoto doesn't know, however, is that Murata hides many dark secrets behind his friendly face. He sells cheap fish to his customers for high prices with his artful lies. If anyone detects his fraud or refuses to go along with his money-making schemes, they're murdered and their bodies disposed of by Murata and his wife in grisly ways. Shamoto is suddenly taken in by Murata's tactics, and by the time he realizes that Murata is insane, and a serial killer who has made over fifty people disappear, he is powerless to do anything about it. But now Mitsuko is a hostage at Murata's home, and Shamoto himself has become the killer's unwilling accomplice. ¶ Meanwhile, the murders, without any trace of the bodies, continue unabated. The police have long suspected Murata and try to get information about him from Shamoto; Murata quickly senses the danger and threatens Shamoto not to report anything to the police. Shamoto has no choice but to obey Murata's order. Cruel murders gradually cripple his mind and finally the ordinary man is driven to the edge of the abyss."

Here's a description of Hell Driver from the production: "An alien-spawned, mysterious mist blankets the northern half of Japan, transforming those who inhale it into ravenous, flesh-eating zombies hell-bent on devouring the surviving human population. Plunged into chaos, Japan is torn in two - the southern half of the country, where the populace remains untouched by the deadly gas, lives behind a heavily-fortified wall, while the northern half is a lawless, zombie-infected wasteland. Political forces are locked in a stalemate over whether the living dead should remain protected as family members or be exterminated like a plague. The economy withers away, and all hope seems lost for the people and the nation of Japan. ÷ Hope arrives in the form of Kika (Yumiko Hara), a beautiful high school girl armed with a chainsaw sword powered by an artificial heart. Recruited by the government, Kika leads a ragtag group of desperados on a secret mission into the zombie-infected wilds to exterminate zombie queen Rikka (Eihi Shiina from Audition and Tokyo Gore Police) and put an end to the plague of the living
dead. But the road is fraught with a thriving zombie culture that, with its own designs on the living half of Japan, refuses to lay down and die. ÷ Visionary filmmaker Yoshihiro Nishimura's first solo directorial effort since Tokyo Gore Police is an epic, apocalyptic road movie featuring non-stop action and over-the-top splatter. The long-awaited realization of his dreams, Hell Driver is Nishimura's bid to create the ultimate zombie film. ÷ The showdown for the future of Japan is at hand and no one, living or dead, may survive to see it!"

Last night's "Secret Screening #3" at Fantastic Fest was the world première of Hell Driver. Unsurprisingly (to me), Sushi Typhoon USA's repeated claim in the recent past that the movie was to have its world première at the Sitges Film Festival proved to be no more trustworthy than, say, the claim that Casey Affleck's hoaxumentary I'm Still Here (starring Joaquin Phoenix) is a documentary. (In actuality, Hell Driver is scheduled to have its European première at the Sitges Film Festival.) The source of mine in question is far more credible than a marketing machine...

Those who are interested in Hell Driver may wish to watch the trailer for the upcoming TV series The Ancient Dogoo Girls (Kodai shôjo-tai Dogûn V); Nishimura is one of the directors of that series, and is responsible for its special make-up effects.

Linked to below is a Sitges Film Festival article on Nishimura. Hell Driver had its European première - now laughably being referred to by Sushi Typhoon USA as its "official world premiere" - at the Sitges Film Festival on Sunday night/Monday morning. (Claiming that the first public screening of a movie didn't constitute its "official world première" is like claiming that the first time one had sex didn't constitute one's "official loss of virginity".)

Nishimura currently is editing the "international version" of Hell Driver - as distinguished from the original version, which had its "unofficial world premiere" at Fantastic Fest in the U.S., and its "official world premiere" at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain. Like the original version, however, the "international version" may well have both an "unofficial world premiere" and an "official world premiere" - meaning that Hell Driver may well end up having four (4) so-called "world premieres"!

BTW, Nishimura and his Nishimura Eizo Co. Ltd. were responsible for the special make-up effects for Jun Tsugita's J-sploitation movie Fashion Hell (Fasshon heru) - a.k.a. "Horny House of Horror" - which The KlockWorx Co. Ltd. (K.K. KurokkuWâkusu) is scheduled to release on rental DVD (KWX-629) in Japan today (December 3rd).
