One of The New York Times Tokyo correspondents covers an Ultraman shoot:

The article laments how younger workers aren't learning the skills to create new miniature sets and rubber-suited heroes/monsters. Shinji Higuchi is interviewed. He's credited as director of the three 1990s Gamera movies, but he was actually the special effects director for those movies, not the director, who was Shusuke Kaneko.
