Title: Best Worst Movie

I remember this film was discussed here in the past, and maybe there was even a whole thread devoted to it, but I can't seem to find anything so someone may be able to provide a link ...
Anyway, this documentary about "TROLL 2" really bowled me over when I finally saw it last night. I expected more of a 'making-of' type documentary and was really surprised that it took a much more character-driven approach. I guess I like TROLL 2 as much as any other bad-movie fan (I saw it when it first came out on VHS 20 years ago and remember laughing at it), but in my eyes, it really isn't the worst movie ever by a long shot. I put TROLL 2 in again this afternoon and only made it 30 minutes in, but I think I'm permanently burned out on the whole 'so-bad-it's-good' thing. The documentary is anything but bad, though. I think it's one of the best films of last year.
BEST WORST MOVIE has more character and real drama than all the 2010 best picture nominees combined. I was amazed how engrossed I was in these real-life people and how each one of them reacts to their new-found 'fame' in cult fandom. There are laughs, sadness, and even tragedy, and the documentary doesn't flinch away from including some pretty raw comments made by the participants about others. I felt I knew each of these people, from the actors to the director, and all of them were shown in their best and worst light (bw!). Not only that, there's even a solid story arc to the whole film as we witness the initial excitement of this ravenous fandom and celebrity and then we witness how it all kind of burns out and fizzles away in the end. A knowledge of TROLL 2 itself is not necessary to view BEST WORST MOVIE. In fact, I think it may be even better if you don't know that much about TROLL 2. To say the least, highly recommended.

Here is the original TROLL 2 discussion thread where BWM got mixed in:
http://z8.invisionfree.com/MHVF/index.php?showtopic=3598I agree that it is one of the best things I saw last year and my expectations were really surpassed with the final product.

I really enjoyed this, too. THe DVD has a lot of great extras, including an interview with the woman who played the goblin queen (surprisingly cut from the film). By the time you get to the Troll 2-inspired music videos, it turns into a case of extras overkill, but a lot of the stuff on there is really worthwhile and on par with the material in the actual film.

Yet to see this doc after missing it at a festival and kicking myself, but UK Mobians should keep an eye on their local Picturehouses cinema (if you have one) as selected cinemas in the chain will be showing a Best Worst Movie / Troll 2 double bill shortly. So far I've seen Edinburgh, Brighton and Liverpool confirmed.

I think plenty of basket cases got enough screen time, and having the goblin queen would have tipped it over the edge. She was an amazing extra however.
The film was a pleasant surprise.

Caught a theatrical screening tonight--the second time I've seen it--and it still plays well the second time. Such an interesting "cast" of characters. You couldn't make up some of these people, and I admire the way Stephenson doesn't flinch from the negative stuff. One can't help but feel a twinge of pity for Fragasso, even if he does suffer from delusions of grandeur.

Fragasso and wife Drudi will be at the East Coast
Chiller convention in April in what's being billed as a "DEMONS vs TROLL 2 Italian Invasion" (Bava, Simonetti, Stivaletti are also scheduled to appear).

Just noticed that BEST WORST MOVIE, the doc on the making of TROLL 2, is now streaming on Netflix.
