Title: Mondo Macbro's big Jess Franco news
Description: De Nesle titles to finally be released..
Anthony Thorne - December 2, 2009 10:19 PM (GMT)
Mondo Macabro have announced a multi-volume series of Jess Franco releases, freed up from the De Nesle estate after years of negotiations, will be released in 2010. The first volume includes LORNA THE EXORCIST, SINNER and THE PERVERSE COUNTESS. Titles have been restored in HD (though these are currently DVD, not Blu-Ray releases) and two further compilations of titles are due later in the year. I'd imagine that the quantity of titles included in Volumes 2 and 3 might ever-so-slightly hinge on sales of the first box. These titles have been legally tied up for years so it's to Mondo Macabro's credit that they were able to sort everything out. Mondo Macabro does Jess Franco

What other titles are in that package? LUCKY THE INSCRUTIBLE?
Domenick Fraumeni - December 5, 2009 03:16 PM (GMT)
I'm assuming that LORNA will be fully restored/uncut?
Anthony Thorne - December 5, 2009 10:45 PM (GMT)
You'd hope that LORNA would be restored / uncut as Mondo Macabro are going back to original source elements from the proper rights holders. I don't think LUCKY will be in this package or the other two as (correct me if I'm wrong) it's not a De Nesle production. The long, rumoured list of titles due in volumes 2 and 3 all cover that early to mid 70's stretch of films largely overlooked up till now because of the aforementioned rights entanglements, now apparently fixed. That said, I can't stress highly enough that if folks want to see more Franco DVD's from Mondo Macabro, they should buy this release and encourage others to do so as well. Mondo Macabro have had at least one mooted, non-Franco future release (a sequel) killed off as some enterprising chap put their initial release of a particular film up on bittorrent, extras, menus and all, within a week or two of it hitting shelves. If a majority of fans decide to download these films rather than helping Mondo Macabro along by buying it, it will likely slit the throat of most future Jess Franco releases in Region 1. There's no reason MM couldn't grab LUCKY down the track, but they'd have to see that there's still a consistent market for Franco titles before they'd bother.

Grrrrrr. I hate the internet.
The other night, I sang the praises of Todd Solondz's HAPPINESS in a chat room I frequent. One of the users thanked me, adding "I'm downloading it now." I jumped all over him, only to receive the stock response, "I'm not stealing anything real. It's just a copy. Not something real."

SOLD! More Lina! Yay! Thank-you Mondo Macabro! As for boots and such....I agree it really, really sucks that this happens. I wonder though.....as these are HD ready...do companies take any consideration at all that alot of people(myself being one), may not be able to afford a double dip on all titles? I would really appreciate that these get a Blu release as that its the edition I'd prefer.
It's all fine and dandy that we, the consumer, have to tip-toe around this subject(sorry in advance if I anger, or offend anyone here, it's not my intent), but what responsibility do the companies have to the fans who DO support these releases? Shouldn't they be fare, and upfront about any possible HD release of these titles in the future?
I want to support releases like this, and place a pre-order....but don't want to get burned later down the line for doing so....it happens too much as is...

If they are basing future releases on the sales of this first set, I'd be very surprised if a BluRay was in the works for any forseeable future release. BluRay's nifty, but for marginal / fringe / cult product, the sales are just not there. I'd wager we'll see iTunes HD releases of such films before BluRay. There's no inventory involved, no warehousing, no penalty for low sales.

But that's the problem though.....the initial sales will be to fans of these films.
I just don't understand how we can have a Blu-ray of a film like CANNIBAL GIRLS right from the start....but not of a collection of long-awaited Franco films.
Young Lina in Hi-def.....yes please! :P

Wishful thinking vs. realistic thinking, respectively?

LOL! I guess that's the case Marshall. Oh well, dvd it is then.

And a year later, we finally get the first release!
To celebrate, I did a small interview with Pete Tombs over at my blog, discussing the Franco releases and the restoration of LORNA THE EXORCIST:http://bruceholecheck.blogspot.com/2010/12...o-macabros.html
Hope you guys dig it! (And be sure to snap up SINNER; it's a doozy of a disc!)

About 3 years back, it was announced that REDEMPTION UK was going to release a few of these early pre-1965 titles, but nada so far...
Rare FRANCO Titles were on a release-roll a few years ago, & then came to a halt. Seems a bit are starting up again as us FRANCO-Heads need our fix, & to experience/enjoy the maestros early works, which are my favorites...

Anchor Bay UK Jess Franco Complete Collection
is out in Jan 2011, and judging by the cover art is possibly consisting the previous two box sets of films (some of which were cut by the BBFC).
I have been working my through my last big batch of 2008 purchases from Ascot DVD shop, eBay, DVDUncut and Amazon resellers to get Jess Franco DVDs uncut and will be happy to purchase the new Mondo Macabro discs.
