Title: Stallone to direct Jason Statham and Jet Li!
Description: THE EXPENDABLES

Doran Gaston - November 7, 2008 07:01 PM (GMT)
Apparently, Sylvester Stallone is directing (and co-starring with?) Jet Li and Jason Statham in a movie called The Expendables. I like this idea. I like it a lot.

I like the idea of Stallone pairing up with some younger action stars a lot too. Of course, I would still love for him to get his Poe feature done.

William S. Wilson - December 8, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
According to the Ultimate Dolph fan site, Stallone is also trying to get his ROCKY IV nemesis Dolph Lundgren in this, which makes it automatically a must see picture!

Neil Jackson - December 8, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
While they're at it, why don't they hire Carl Weathers, Mr T and Tommy Morrison. OK, maybe not Tommy Morrison.

William S. Wilson - December 13, 2008 11:33 PM (GMT)
UFC star Randy Couture and Forrest Whitaker have also been cast in this. Plus, Jet Li will be fighting Dolph!

Ben Kingsley is out and Eric Roberts is in! Also, some unknown named Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed on to play himself in a flashback that happens around the filming of CONAN. WOW!

Is Stallone shooting for Cult Classic or just Exploitation Classic and is there a difference?

This will blow your mind, but Scott Adkins is also supposed to be in this!

Van Damme needs to be in this. Throw in Seagal and it would be the IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD of B-grade action flicks.

And it's being bankrolled by Millennium/Nu Image! YES!!!

I'd almost rather Stallone stick to starring and let Isaac Florentine direct.

Or maybe it's the Destroy All Monsters of b-grade action flicks. :P

Why not Chuck Norris? And Sonny Chiba? And Sammo Hung! And, speaking of Isaac Florentine...the Power Rangers!!!! :D

Van Damme was offered a role and turned it down! Suddenly the guy who made about 30 DTV flicks is concerned about character. Here is what he said in a recent interview about it.

“Stallone gave me a part in his next movie," he told us. "But I ask him about the subject, about the story."

"He said, ‘You’re gonna make lots of money.’ I don’t want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character.  He was unable to tell what it’s going to be."

"[Stallone said:] 'You know, uh, well, the fighting will be good.' [So I said:] 'Sly, what is my character?' So I didn’t do the movie."

For some weird reason, this thread is starting to remind me of this:

They need to write some scenes for Van Damme that give him lots of "character," pay him less money than they would have, then shoot those scenes, along with some obligatory fight scenes, cut out all the "character" scenes, and leave in only what the rest of us would want to see. Somebody involved in the movie has got to be smart enough to finesse this. B)

William S. Wilson - February 19, 2009 08:32 PM (GMT)
Apparently Stallone got the memo and decided to make it cooler by casting Danny Trejo!

Terry Barhorst, Jr. - February 19, 2009 09:04 PM (GMT)
I hope we're not looking at another SNAKES ON A PLANE type disappointment. Not that this movie is being over-hyped (yet).

William S. Wilson - March 19, 2009 09:03 PM (GMT)
Stallone has knocked the coolness of the flick down a couple of notches by revealing to AICN that he has cast Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent) in the flick.

Mark Tinta - March 19, 2009 09:12 PM (GMT)
Man. Even if 50 was relevant to the '80s throwback feel this seems (or at least, we hope) to be going for, there's getting to be too many people in this. Unless he's playing a character named "Steve James," I can do without 50 in this.

William S. Wilson - April 6, 2009 04:33 AM (GMT)
According to MMA newsites, Stallone has offered fighter Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira a small role in the film. For the MMA nerds, his August 2009 UFC opponent Randy Couture also has a role.

William S. Wilson - April 15, 2009 03:44 PM (GMT)
Well, looks like Stallone got wind of my disappointment with the casting of 50 Cent and he has been replaced by Terry Crews. Awesome. Also, PM Entertainment vet Gary Daniels has been cast in a role!

Update from IMDb:

Seagal Scraps Stallone Film Over Producer
8 June 2009 3:05 PM, PDT

Action man Steven Seagal has turned down the chance to team up with pal Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke and Dolph Lundgren in new film The Expendables over a reported dispute with one of the movie's producers.

The Under Siege star has worked with producer Avi Lerner on a handful of films, but insiders report the pair has fallen out.

A source tells movie new website Moviehole.net, "There’s too much bad blood between them."

But the all-star action film is close to adding another big Hollywood name - reports suggest Bruce Willis is in negotiations to join Stallone and his pals in the movie.

William S. Wilson - June 10, 2009 04:39 PM (GMT)
I also read a report that Stallone tried to get his DEMOLITION MAN co-star Denis Leary and Jackie Chan into this flick, but their schedules couldn't allow it.

William S. Wilson - August 18, 2009 10:41 PM (GMT)
Bruce Willis is also going to be doing a Schwarzenegger style cameo in this now.

Brian Camp - August 19, 2009 10:40 AM (GMT)
A documentary about the trials and tribulations of gathering the cast would probably make a better action movie than THE EXPENDABLES itself. :P

William S. Wilson - September 2, 2009 06:43 PM (GMT)
Looks like we will have to wait a bit longer for this one as the release date has changed from April 2009 to August 2009.

YES!

Man, you know it's Millennium Films when you see that ridiculously fake CGI blood!

Dolph doesn't even warrant above-the-title mention? Come on!

Victor Boston - October 14, 2009 09:00 AM (GMT)
This could be really good. The cast alone has me psyched - even if they just stand around out macho-ing each other while reeling off the phonebook, this should be good. Then again, the trailer does have a lot of footage of guys standing around trading cliches so lets hope the action is being kept for the red band trailer. I should keep in mind too that a great cast and crew didn't save ORIGINAL GANGSTAS although maybe I just need to revisit that one.

I can smell the badassery from here.

"Bring it, happy feet."

Bill Picard - October 14, 2009 02:23 PM (GMT)
Me too. I admit the "your hairdresser" line made me laugh out loud.

William S. Wilson - October 14, 2009 05:39 PM (GMT)
It is strange but I was hoping this wouldn't be as jokey as it is. Stallone could never really pull off the one liners to well, even back in the day. I guess a harder film like RAMBO is what I envisioned.

YouTube has removed at least two EXPENDABLES trailers that I know of. Keep looking around. I'm sure it'll be back, despite the studio's mad attempt to stop free marketing.
